Could you imagine us signing somebody now who captained Spain and Barca. These are the days that came back to bite us back in the bum financially and nearly put us out of business. What about a player that won a Scottish cup medal aged 17 and went on to win a champions league medal. Probably the most successful player to come out of St Mirren but not one of our best players picked by a fan so far.

Along with the club Lambert kinda lost his way after the Cup win being part of the squad that was eventually relegated, IIRC he got sent off in his last game for us against Morton. As an aside if you look at the successful Motherwell team from the mid-90's it contained Lambert, Billy Davies & Brian Martin for 3 years during which time they finished 3rd & 2nd in the league! ******************* I don't think anyone has mentioned Archie Gemmell yet another ex-Saint to win the European Cup elsewhere.. It was the money received from Phil O'Donnell that put that team together , I have a theory that after this Celtic and Rangers got together and decided not to buyplayers playing for Scottish clubs as paying them good money for players just allowed them to put together a team capable of challenging them . It didn't work out too good for us with the 850k we received for Ian Ferguson.

antrin
Ta, CS. ”four friendlies and then they made me wait”... and Scotland was cold.... hah! He wasn’t tough enough (or probably tall enough) for Saints. Well rid, I’d say...

Wilbur
In my time supporting St Mirren our greatest ever player is Tony Fitzpatrick. Several others deserve honourable mentions. My second choice would be John McCormick.

In terms of overall contribution to "the cause" he isn't worth a ranking on our top ten IMO.

branniganm
Jackie Copland was my hero when i was wee. I meet him in the St Mirren shop in the piazza once and just about sh*t myself. He just seemed immense !!!

As for the greatest player ever for St Mirren............... I can't separate Fitzy, Weir and McGarvey.

Are we talking about appearances here? Skill? Captaincy? Because the likes of Shuggie played a lot of games but was 1st division player. I think it has to be somebody who stood out in the top flight like Fitzy or Jack Copland. Ian Scanlon or Peter Weir types. People saying Yardley is laughable. Good servant to club but no-where near good enough for top flight. Yardley was one of my favourite players from the past, though a tongue in cheek moment from myself suggesting he was our greatest ever player. donport
Would Iain Munro & Billy Thompson each with 7 Scottish Caps whilst with the club deserve to share the honour - both would have been with the club in 79/80 when we finished 3rd in the League (our joint highest position) and won the Anglo Scottish Cup.Peter Weir was also capped at this time as well! SelkirkSaint
Ian Scanlon. Never missed a penalty for us. First two goals for us knocked Celtic out the league cup. Scored my favourite goal ever in the 4 - 2 comeback game. A key player in getting us to four semi-finals in 3 seasons.
