Your Favourite St Mirren Journeymen

Recommended Posts

Not the the best football players or legends.

Just those who stood out  by giving 100% for the Club.

They may just just become a cult hero, but not for outstanding football ability..

Two who spring to mind are John Young and Peter Leonard from the 1970's.

Not brilliant players but had their moments.

Young was a poor full back but when moved to central defence next to Reid or Copland , he really stood out. A 100 percenter.

Leonard was just Leonard. :thumbs2

I am sure there are plenty more.

Always like me Steven Thomson (the sparrow). He was integral in giving us the balance which allowed us to play some of the best flowing football I have ever seen from us. Always gave 100% and bagged a couple against Celtic in that famous win!

Junior Mendes , never knew what  he was going to do, but when it was good it was fantastic but he always gave 100%. Beckett though was my fav , and that goal at Parkheid in the 2-1 win in 77-78 was a worldy   …………. still love quoting that season v Celtic...…………. 3-3, 3-1, 2-1, 2-1.... bar the dead club did anyone else win 3 draw 1 lose none to the Sellick in a season

Andy Millen for me , thought he was finished when we signed him , had never really rated him previously , but served us well .

Andy was not as quick as he once was, but he was way better than a decent journeyman. He was good in the air, organised the entire defence, hard in the tackle and read the game excellently. He was one of the unsung hero's I would say.  :guinness

And he was a decent guy too - I remember having a beer with him once !

One of my favourite players over the last 30+ years. Thought he was totally underrated.

I'll probably get slated by younger fans... but Hugh Murray.

Loved Shuggy but more for his application than skill.

Whoever mentioned Norrie McWhirter... He was far too talented to be considered a journeyman player.

Julian Broddle.

Murray deserves his place as a club legend. Never mind the appearance count, every time you thought he was past it and benched, the day he was back in the starting XI he was back to his best.

I always thought Shug Murray should have played for Scotland , totally unappreciated , imagine how good he would have looked with better players roundabout him . Not saying he should have been a regular , just think he was better than some of the Muppets that got Scottish caps .

Danny McGarry

Came to us on loan from Barnsley and formed an integral part of the Summer cup winning side of 1943.  A bowdy leggit inside forward he was like a wee skilful wasp, cutting inside from either wing and laying the ball off to the likes off Alec Linwood or Johnny Deakin.

Wee Dan really ought to have played for Scotland, it was obvious to anyone who saw him what a fine footballer he was.  Every time he picked up the ball and ran with it an air of excitement filled the pish stained terraces.   I could hardly hold my pish can still at times such was the excitement.

In the semi final against the Greenock underclasses he was magnificent.  A time when the Greenock ne'er do wells were expected to beat us (Stanley Mathews and Tommy Lawton were playing) he never stopped, that was some game.  The final though against the then Rangers football club was awesome and wee Dan worked his rolled down socks off, us beating the Ibrox menace by a single, magnificent Alec Linwood goal.

Wee Dan was an amazing player, the type of player Scotland once produced consistently.  The most modern equivalent for you young whipper snappers would be much better version of  Pat Nevin.  I cant think of a player like that currently playing.  Very sad, wee Dan was small and probably wouldn't make it through the half witted "yer no big enough" academies of today.  Skill and character in abundance I give you Danny McGarry.

A good memories, good memories indeed.

DJ,

We did indeed win 3 draw 1 against them in 77/78, but the “Beckett worldly” was a couple of seasons later, November 1980 I think.
