Today's number, 155, slightly down on the corresponding day last week.

It’s old hat faraway. These deaths are historical.

The ONS stats out today  - which have a week’s lag - show that mortality is back to normal. Indeed it’s started to dip below normal.

There were 5 deaths in hospitals in England & Wales announced today.

And here’s the thing, what you see happening in Leicester is the start. As more testing is done, more “cases” will be found.

And as more people start going to hospitals again and the backlog of operations begins, more hospital admissions will be announced.

When a 30 year old asymptomatic goes in for his knee operation and gets tested positive then that will go down as a Covid hospital admission.

The epidemic is well and truly over. But there will be more Leicester’s to follow as the lunacy continues.

That's good as my prediction of this dropping like a stone will come true and I'll be a hero, now leave me alone. :P

It’s ironic that rather than opening up like the rest of Europe, the SNP are trying to be more English than the English in keeping us in lockdown.

You couldn’t make it up!

Nicola Sturgeon has shamelessly been been using the crisis to further the nationalist agenda.

But most worrying is the fact that they have enjoyed imposing a fascist police state regime on the people of Scotland and don’t want to give up that control.

Seriously? Imposing a fascist police state 😂

The evidence points to the most effective way to combat, is to limit contact wherever possible. A lockdown is/ has been one of the most effective ways of doing that but I believe we agree on this. Warm weather alone wont beat this virus and that is my objection to the poster, his suggestion it's just another flu and hot weather somehow proves that is massively inaccurate.

NRS weekly mortality report just published.

Scotland now follows the rest of the U.K. by reporting NEGATIVE excess deaths.

In other words, LESS people died in Scotland last week than died over the average of the previous 5 years

(note to @TPAFKATS and his tin foil hat - that’s how the NRS calculates excess deaths.... doh!)

1,006 deaths in Scotland last week compared with 1,026 in the previous 5 year average

This compares with an average of 1,235 per week in 2020 BEFORE the crisis started.

Yes, you read that correctly. The number of people who died in Scotland last week was nearly 20% lower than the average number of deaths before the COVID crisis.

And this isn’t an isolated week.

The number of people who have died in each of the last 6 weeks in Scotland is lower than the average in the 11 weeks before the crisis.

The average number of weekly deaths in Scotland in the last 6 weeks is 1,092 compared with the average of 1,235 in the 11 weeks at the start of 2020.

Indeed, the average number of deaths in Scotland over the past 9 weeks is lower than the average over the 11 weeks before the crisis.

The number of people who died in Scotland last week is the 2nd lowest since August last year.

Can any rational person really argue that the curve hasn’t been flattened enough?

Remember back in 99/00 when we won the league under Tom Hendrie?

Remember what a great season it was?

If course we do.

Remember the lockdown that winter to protect the NHS?

Remember when football was cancelled during the winter?

Nah, me neither.

Cumulative deaths per million in Scotland from week 45 onwards

Guest TPAFKATS
A media frenzy over a "spike" in D & G amounting to a mere 5 positive cases. Somewhat conveniently in the current climate it is being treated as a cross border incident.
It's good that we are now talking about a handful of cases as opposed to dozens of deaths.
Catching some of FM daily briefing just now, she's just skewered those politicians trying to politicise events.

Can we assume from this view that

1. You now accept the lock down was the right call given the excessive death nature before the curve flattened? In other words you were wrong to be screaming there shouldn't be a lock down.

2. You accept that not only does current evidence point to many more people dying because of lock down restrictions was an unsubstantiated claim, there's actually a very reasonable case to be made that certain other causes of death have been curbed by lock down?

As for a rational person arguing the curve has been "flattened enough" this virus has went from a few cases in Asia to at least 10.5 million globally in seven months. On what planet don't you see the point that if we lift restrictions too quickly, the virus could easily bounce back?

This fool is the type of dumb idiot who the SNP has relied upon for support

Type of low life who would use his wife’s police ID to skip a queue and shop at a time reserved for NHS staff

Its enlightening time see that even buffoons like this can see that the SNP is using the panic-demic as means of furthering their xenophobic hatred of the English.

A 30 minute radio show packed with stats about the pandemic's career, so far.

hosted by Tim Harford, statistician on Radio 4 and for the FT.

Clear, accurate, realistic - interpreting the data to be comprehensible.

You need to have the concentration greater than that of an oyster, though...

Your decision.  :)

Some more snippets on the fatal lockdown catastrophe from the NRS

Latest week stars published this morning compared with 5 year average

11 COVID deaths in hospital

116 less deaths in hospital of other causes

2 COVID deaths at home

86 more deaths of other causes at home

14 COVID deaths in care homes almost cancelled out by 15 less deaths of other causes

Denying people access to hospital treatment caused 88 needless deaths last week @bazil85. You are supporting this.

The Scottish government needs to be held accountable for this lethal policy

Imagine looking at figures in isolation for a single week to validate a point after providing the larger evidence that destroys your view. You were wrong, accept you were wrong & move on. Be a better person.

Practically any worthwhile stats that can be shared now backs up a lockdown as the right call. It was always known that people would sadly die in this pandemic & the approach has been the path that limits death.

You completely ignore the risk some people have in going into hospitals in the current climate. Hence why the advice to some is not to come in & often to shield.

Even with a lockdown, Covid19 has contributed to the overwhelming majority of excessive deaths in this country as it has with practically any other comparison we can look at. We can look at countries that didn’t lockdown or lifted restrictions too quickly as strong evidence without one, the U.K. virus cases would have been unmanageable & far more would have died.

There is nothing that points to more people dying from other causes compared to Covid19, in fact collectively you have provided evidence to the opposite.

Your walls have closed in, put your pride to the side & accept what many others with your ridiculous view already have. 👍

5th April

Matt Hancock:

The Health Secretary said the virus is expected to peak within 10 days but said the ventilator capacity will likely be below 18,000

The Health Secretary has admitted the goal ventilator capacity for 18,000 patients is unlikely to be in place for the expected peak of the virus, despite saying the government scheme is on track.

Actual number of ventilators used at peak was 3,301 just 7 days later
