St Mirren v Aberdeen Scottish Cup Quarter Final 29/2/20

Well, a bit of a damp squib.

Early goal, gave them the opportunity with schoolboy defending, a good finish right enough.

Huffed and puffed for over an hour, one disappointing attempt at attack after another.

Aberdeen are beatable, we never looked like doing that.

Easier to accept if we'd been pumped but a real chance gone.

Ach, at least Ant and Dec was good TV.

Aberdeen were there for the taking last night. We didn’t threaten their goal with much,  we forced one save in a match we were chasing from the start.

Goodwin claims we were the better side. Aye we pinned them back most of the 2nd half but at no point were the Dons defending like their lives were at stake. Shite through balls, shite crosses, shite decisions. The Sheep didn’t need to step out of first gear.

Piss poor for a QF at home. I’d have been alright with defeat if we had made Aberdeen earn the win, but we offered very little against a beatable side and that’s the most annoying thing. Based on that alone Aberdeen fully deserve their victory because we didn’t ever look like clawing a goal back.

Weather conditions did not help but the early Aberdeen goal set the scene for a dire game. Four, maybe five 'shots' in total throughout game from both teams? We had some pretty, short passages of good possession and passing but really never looked like doing enough in final third to break them down. We just lack the quality and guile to break down teams who sit back. We have a chance in more open games unfortunately this wasn't one of them and Aberdeen did what they do best sitting on a one goal lead

Perfect summary of the game.

Dominated possession in the second half, but didn't lay a punch on them, mainly because our final ball lacked any quality. Even our free kicks and corners were poor.

Erling Haaland would have struggled to score for us last night.

Hopefully Conor will learn from last night and boot the ball to f**k the next time.

I wouldn't call them fuds but it is shameful that they purchased £20 tickets.

League more important. After the game pundits on radio saying vintage performance from Aberdeen, really, what the feck were they watching. Both teams were dire.

League more important.

Come back and tell me this when we have a chance of winning it.

The League is corrupt and pointless. Friendly matches every week from August to May.

Be there by paying between £22 and £30 per match.

Enjoy

When Ilkay’s not firing then there is no creativity in the team. McGrath been a huge disappointment so far. McAllister same and far too injury prone. Disaster giving him a three year deal. Andreu, far too inconsistent. MacPherson and Foley both been good but don’t create a lot of chances. It’s a worry. There are no match winners there.

To sum up.

We are shite.

All Goodwin cares about are the 2 goals conceded. That tells you of the negative defensive outlook our manager seems to have.

His 1st thought should've been about our lack of creativity and failure to have 1 shot at goal as the home team in a cup quarter final!!

That's a fair point

As someone has said Durmus isn't on his game we really struggle

McAllister,Andreu and McGarth have been disappointing so far

Set plays are very poor especially since we aren't blessed with height

Hanging balls up ain't going to work

Livi and the Fakes have shown over the years how valuable set plays are

I was really surprised at this type of delivery.

Thought it was generally dropped years ago.

A goalies ball every day of the week, absolute waste.

we just didn't create anything of note. Yes. we had plenty of possession but nothing to show for it. No end product. I'm not sure it was Aberdeen's defending that stopped it. We just made the wrong decisions in the final third. Poor day at the office. Let's hope it's a blip and we get things right v the saintees.

We lost a home tie against a mediocre Aberdeen and got knocked out of the Cup yet your biggest disappointment is the “stay away fans”?

Dissapointing on many levels is what I said. That's what it was.

We weren't alone in the stay away fans department. Easter Road and Tynecastle also looked half full. Both Hibs and Hearts went on to win.

We didn't, despite having more possession, more attempts (6 - 5) (1 on target, they had 2 one of them a penalty) and more corners (8-3) It certainly wasn't from lack of effort either as our guys ran their socks off.

Aberdeen were thoroughly professional and after scoring created a very strong defensive unit that we just couldn't find a way through.

Onwards to the next league game.

Couldn't make the game but was able to watch on telly - really disappointed

We just never looked like doing anything

With Rangers just going out as we kicked off, a victory would not only have taken us to Hampden, it would have given us a 67% chance of getting a realistically winnable semi (assuming Celtic get through) and getting us back to the Scottish Cup final.

Aberdeen are no great shakes just now and we have matched up well against them all season - it should have been a great night.

A golden opportunity squandered.
