Scotland's Game

I started to watch it last night and then realised it's an old series that I had seen before.

Back then I said that I agreed with huge chunks of it, and then disagreed with other assumptions that were being made.

Grassroots football is imperative - of course. And we should be doing far more to raise the standards of coaching across the juvenile game. The cost of coaching courses is a factor of course but that could be reduced if they scrapped the stupid DVD and put the digital content online - but a bigger factor from my perspective was putting a stop to the practice of regional coaches cancelling courses at short notice because the numbers don't make it financially viable. If volunteers have set aside space in their lives to attend these things they should be going ahead no matter the numbers!

I think we could also look at more specialisation across the juvenile pathways. We have specialist goalkeeping coaching - but not enough goalkeeper coaches - but we don't have specialist defensive or striking courses. If we have specialist pathways that may also see a route towards how we might better retain the better juvenile coaches in the game beyond the point where this child stops playing. We need to stop wasting resources. Scouting qualifications might also be a good idea to improve standards and to keep some of the better volunteers in the game.

i also disagree with the assertion that was being made by the likes of Craig Levien that it's important to get kids into senior clubs at 6 years old. That is absolutely nonsense and it's led to a huge wastage of talent and money within the sport. We didn't need to get kids into football clubs at 6 years old when they were out playing on the streets, and we don't need to do it now if we focus on improving standards of coaching at grassroots level. For me this is a major factor in where the design goes wrong. How the hell can any scout spot a future talent at centre half when they are watching kids as young as 6 playing 4-a-side football.

I don't agree with Craig Levein on this either and my grandson was part of the wider Hearts Coaching for Kids set up. Each year they selected some to "move up". As it turns out he loved playing cricket more than football so he followed that path until he left school. They also had various elite levels at local, regional and Scottish levels. It seems to be the way of things.
