portmahomack saint
Why didn't we think of this before, Erasing and burying our dark and embarrassing history by knocking down these statues from 300/400 yrs ago of industrialists and traders who made their fortune in slavery and exploiting people , Should we really stop there, Why don't we dismantle the coliseum in Rome where they fed all those Christians to the lions for their entertainment and all those statues and monuments too while were at it, And lets not forget those cruel and sadistic Pharaohs of Egypt using slaves to build those big stupid Pyramids when a couple of Irish navvies could have dug a 6 ft hole in the ground for less than half the cost, Yes lets smash those Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings to bits. We can't bury our history and we shouldn't even try it's who we are, We have to learn from our mistakes of the past, We should be building more statues of people who have shown us the errors of our ways, People who deserved to be remembered for what they did. Real icons like Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammed Ali, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, The Great Nelson Mandela, To name just a few, Not George Floyd. A statue being taken down has resulted in more people learning about the history of slavery in UK than it being displayed for nearly 200 years

I think the Africa/America slave trade of the 17/18th century had a uniquely ethnic quality to it which affects our society to this day - we can't bury our history but I still say I say we should take down the statues of slavers. Their is a school of thought that says the pyramids that argues that the pyramids, anyway, were built by skilled labour not slaves - despite what you read in the bible. Your icon's list starts with advocates for non-violence like Gandhi and ends up with "The Great" Nelson Mandela who was head of the ANCs armed wing and was described as a terrorist by one ex-PM - seems a bit inconsistent to me. Despite what Floyd may have done in the past his killing was unlawful and any attempt to diminish him is wrong.

Current thinking on all the Pharaonic constructions (for at least 30 years now) is that they were always Community Projects, in which everyone in that society invested themselves in accordance with the belief system they held. (Particularly when the Nile has flooded the land, making it unworkable). Blame Hollywood for yet another slipshod and erroneous depiction of society. Just like the slaves in Gone With The Wind. We also have a statue of Mr Coates who at one point owned the largest thread company in the world. Although distanced from the raw commodity of cotton, he and the people of Paisley benefited hugely from the cotton industry. ( fact check) I haven’t researched this post fully, he may have sourced cotton from Egypt, as there is an area just behind the old RAI called Egypt Park on old maps which may be a link to the cotton trade. So Maggie Thatcher called Nelson Mandela a terrorist in that case it must be true As they say One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter And there's no inconsistencies on the list, all these people RIGHTLY in their own way or another fought for their rights, whether that be against slavery apartheid for independence or even the right just to sit on a bus,

Your right, and if we start knocking down the buildings that were erected with the wealth created by the slave trade and the sweat and toil of all the indigenous peoples of the world that the British empire raped and pillared over the years they wont be a town or city centre still standing in Britain.
