It's not a real Markies store anyway, selling yesterday's stuff.

aye it is.  Has been a Paisley stalwart store for many a year now.  Sad to see it go.

Littlewoods, Goldbergs, BHS, John Menzies, Clarks, Woolworths, Stereo one, Galbraiths all gone and now Sparkies of Markies will follow.

The lack of free parking, a halfwitted designed one way system and the lack of traffic on the High Street has seen our thriving town descend to a ghost town.

Thats what Buddies get for voting Labour all those years.

Stupid Labour voters, stupid Labour voters indeed.

The shameful and worst thing is, ‘we’ the people have said for umpteen years , the parking and one way which isn’t necessary in our town has played a very big part in putting people off visiting the town centre.

Yes, Braehead, Silverburn etc ALL the more reason to take the hit on free parking & allow traffic through the town again,

The council have been awful for years, but hey , keep voting them in & nothing changes

Eh? Kids health has improved with no traffic on the High Street?

Tom might be slightly off with Markies but his point has some worth

The slow but sure death of the high Street has been assisted by the issues he stated.

Sorry to hear this, hope all the staff get relocated where they want.

Not sure parking us such a big issue for shoppers in Paisley. Isn't it still free at weekends and there was a trial of free parking all week round recently.

If you are going yo go to silver urn or brae head I stead of Marks in Paisley, it'll cost more in petrol than parking.

Who's faces are closest to exhaust pipes when sitting in buggies and prams.

You suggesting, having no ring road and let all the traffic pass through the High Street.

How would traffic passing through town centre increase foot traffic in shops, you can't stop outside shops.

Besides, who's kidding who. High Streets up and down the country have been dying a slow death for years.

I'd doubt Paisley is a hot spot in the UK for emissions and as the high street isn't residential I'm sure the amount of exposure the kids get isn't going to kill them

Most people on the forum grew up in that environment.

There were fewer people with cars.

High streets grew out of changing shopping patterns in the past, have suffered from the growth of out of town shopping centres followed by online shopping.

Returning road traffic to town high streets is unlikely to be accepted as part of the solution unless this is accompanied by returning a number of the units  and offices to residential use.

There are new ideas out there for retail which combine retail and increased use of technology in flexible ways. Hasn't arrived yet.. But on its way.

Indeed.

There's also an increase in asthma and other respiratory conditions coinciding with the increase in car usage.

In the early 60s there were around 4 cars in the street I lived in from around 30 houses. Now... This would average around 1 or more per house.

And quite a few other things, not like you to give half a story...................oh wait, it is.

The rise in allergies and asthma may also be due to an increase in airborne pollens, climate changes that trigger a rise in pollen levels, the energy-proofing of indoor home and work spaces, urban air pollution, or the overuse of antibiotics

leading theory behind the rising allergy and asthma diagnosis rates is the "hygiene hypothesis." This theory suggests that living conditions in much of the world might be too clean and that kids aren't being exposed to germs that train their immune systems to tell the difference between harmless and harmful irritants

The wife would be chuff, if it were true. She works in the college and loves shopping in M&S.

The story I read - one of the Paisley FB pages? - said they were moving the foodhall there and other staff would be transferred to Braehead.

Implication is no job losses so that's good. Other implication is they're up against Lidl and Iceland food-wise so that could be bad.

Time will tell.
