St. Mirren v Dunfermline Athletic 13-07-21

Recommended Posts

I thought all of the new signings played well.

As others have mentioned, Power strolled it. I thought that kiltie added a lot of energy playing just in behind the front two. Tanser put the ball in the box regularly and Main, used his presence to unsettle the defence and chipped in with a debut goal. Dunne did well defensively too.

Only downside was that, once again, we failed to take our chances.

Main, Dennis, McAllister and MacPherson should all have done better with chances in the second half.

Hope McCarthy's injury isn't too bad.

Interesting to read the comments on the game from those that were there.

The goal from Main and the general background to his performance somewhat differs from the gist of the thread in the main section of the website................:whistle

Of course maybe his performance was only a one off and he will now disappear from view for the rest of the season. That would please a few folk, no doubt!

Only player I had concerns abt last night was Brophy. Rarely involved. Seemed to be a yard off the pace. Perhaps he was not getting the amount of service Main had but Main worked hard to find openings and space. Well impressed with Tanser and Kiltie had a solid game. Powers looked a different player to the one I watched for Killie last year where I thought he laboured. Dunne looked excellent in 1st half. Thought he tired a bit in 2nd half but no feck ups. What impressed me most abt the performance last night was the amount of midfield possession we won from Dunfermline when they were in possession. Closed them down very quickly. Looks a decent squad this year.

However it was only the 1st competitive game of the season and I refuse to be buoyed by 1 decent performance 🤣

Hard to be critical of last night’s performance. Maybe worth remembering we were playing a championship team, albeit probably one of the better ones. Lack of goals probably the only criticism bar a couple of wee hairy moments towards the end, but it’s rare to get through an entire game against any opposition without them having one of two sniffs. As DJChapsticks said though, rarely seen a more comfortable one nil.
Back 3 looked solid enough and was particularly impressed with Dunne. Both wingbacks were really good. McGrath had a quiet game by his standards but I thought both Power and Kiltie were very good. Up front remained the problem for me. Brophy was very quiet and the goal aside, although he worked very hard and put himself about, I didn’t see a huge amount in Main to make me think he’ll trouble better defences. Obviously very early days though.

Thought we lost a bit of cohesion when all the subs came on, but that is normal and I guess it was important to give as many players a run out as possible.
All in all, more than satisfactory.

Yet to see the best of Brophy. Performances not quite what I hoped for thus far

Agreed. I thought there was a bit of promise in his last couple of performances last season. If ever a player needed a goal it’s him. Still believe there’s a player there. Hopefully he’ll get off the mark soon.

Brophy scored a double against Linfield. Trouble is I just dont see him scoring enough. Our strikers trouble me. We need a better option up front.

Brophy scored penalties, offers not a lot otherwise.

Outside of the big 2 in Scotland i doubt there is a club or fans of their respective clubs saying the exact same. Any decent striker worth their salt will not come to Scotland unless they are coming from an “inferior” league and if that is the case then they can not be classed as a prolific striker
