He will be playing with a much more talented and skillful group of players at Mansfield. Nigel Clough will improve his game and help him achieve his ambition of playing in the EPL. Good post, Oracle. stlucifer Posted May 22, 2024 Report Posted May 22, 2024 I remember when we signed the lad it was said that bigger English teams had looked at him and he was with the Aussie under 23s. Many were surprised he came to us and it was only a matter of a couple of months until he was in the full Aussie squad. My grandson immediately got his shirt printed "17 Baccus". We expected him to be snapped up before his contract was up. That's the only disappointment I have. We won't benefit WHEN he moves up the leagues in England. Thank you and good luck Keanu. As far as I'm concerned, you'll always be welcome down Greenhill Road. Quote

Nigel Clough has failed at several teams, why is he the man to improve Baccus? Quote

Nigel Clough in two spells as their manager took Burton Albion from being a non league 7th tier team, to promotion to the English Championship, and the League Cup Semi Finals. He saved Sheffield United from certain relegation when he joined them. And got them to the FA Cup and League Cup Semi Finals. He turned Mansfield into arguably the best footballing side in League 2 and achieved automatic promotion too. He has improved many players who's careers were stagnating. Davis Keillor-Dunn who came through the Scottish Leagues with various clubs, but his career seemed to be going nowhere. Clough turned him into a much better player he was Mansfields top goalscorer last season. He is now being pursued by several Championship clubs and is valued at £2.5 million. He will do the same with Keanu Baccus. Quote

Regardless of this he is now no longer our player - 12 months ago Baccus leaving on a free would have seemed an almost impossible void to fill , however , his first season was significantly better than his last and he was absolutely not a certain starter for us going forward . Good luck to the lad and I am glad he headed South as opposed to staying in Scotland . I think Robbo has known this outcome for some time and will unearth another gem to replace him . Quote

I agree, he'll be a loss but nowhere as big a loss a he might have been last season. The manager has, and hopefully will continue, got us players that perform above recent form so I'm more than happy he will do so again. Roll on next season and Europe. Quote
Smithers Jones Posted May 25, 2024 Report Posted May 25, 2024 I think we will really miss his style of play and in particular his energy. When we didn't have the ball, his intensity to win it back, and when we did have the ball his drive to get us up the park was fantastic. When he came on as a sub (more this season) he lifted the pace of how the whole team played immediately. We don't have anyone else in midfield like that. Good luck to him. Quote

Unfortunately for us, him becoming an Aussie regular worked against us and Baccus when it came to continuity in the team. As you said when Baccus replaced Boyd-Munce the change in pace in midfield was obvious. The latter, whilst he can be decent for us, is too ponderous. One of weaker points was not getting the ball forward quickly enough in midfield. Quote

They both used to burst forward, sometimes together, but now O'Hara and Boyd-Munce both seem to be happy sitting deeper (or they have been told to do so) and we rely more on McMenamin or Kiltie to get us forward with not much energy from the middle of the park. stlucifer Posted May 25, 2024 Report Posted May 25, 2024 I think it is his tenacity that we will miss. He was always one tackle away from a yellow card though. The nearest we have left in house is Gogic and we're using him at the back. Quote

HSS Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 Mansfield open the season with a 2-1 win at Barnsley with Baccus providing an assist for one of the goals Quote
