Was thinking with few players released and others not accepting offers, how many players actually go on to bigger and better when released by us

And not talking about those sold like McGinn and McLean

Dougie Bell

Freed by us yet went on to have not a bad career……….including winning Cup Winners Cup and Super Cup

Jackie Copland , Chris Iwelumo , Stuart Munro , Steve Cowan ,  Martin McIntosh etc

Was thinking of all these myself along with Dougie Bell and Aaron Mooy.

Re Iwelumo, did we voluntarily free him or was it not the case that he went off abroad somewhere when his contract was up to avoid a fee being payable, ala Jamie Fullarton?

Chic Charnley

We freed him twice (think he was sacked the second time) and were the only club to pay a transfer fee for him?

We also gave George Shaw away who did okay for himself. Think that was part of the huge waste of money on the combined Charnley / Elliott signings

I was at Tynecastle the night Charnley disgraced the club with his stamping and spitting, not acceptable at our club even if Hearts had set out to wind him up

He never accepted the responsibility that came with that transfer fee despite claiming to "love" St Mirren (obviously not as much as he loved celtic)

He was rumoured, a very strong rumour at the time, to have worked his ticket for a free after being tapped by Fergie

Did Jimmy Bone not return in a Hearts strip after leaving on a free to wind down his career at Arbroath?

We signed Bone from Arbroath for £25/30k When he left us he went to Hong Kong for a couple of seasons before returning to Scotland with Hearts

So that would fall under the topic set by the OP.  My memory is getting worse.

I seem to think Jimmy Bone just played through the summer in Hong Kong , and played for Hearts the season after he left St Mirren .

Seems I'm wrong and HSS is totally correct . I'm using old age as an excuse.

Not quite released by us but Anders Dreyer who some of us saw early doors was an absolute pler, is now at Anderlecht and has racked up some record between the Danish and Russian leagues before his Belgian move.

Some amount of money he must have made on transfers & contract signings since leaving Brighton:

On 6 January 2020, FC Midtjylland announced that Dreyer had returned to Denmark and signed a four-and-a-half year contract.

On 28 August 2021, he signed a five-year contract with Russian club FC Rubin Kazan.

On 6 July 2022, he transferred to Midtjylland on a permanent basis and signed a four-year contract.

On 15 January 2023, Dreyer signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Anderlecht in Belgium.

His agent must absolutely love him. He’s only 25. 😂

To be fair, he'd probably still be in Russia but the war led to him being able to cancel that 5 year deal after less than a season and go back to Midtjylland.

Charnley was sacked in December 1992 for spitting on a player at Ayr United.

“The midfield player's fragile temperament let him down again last week when it was alleged he spat at Ayr United's Duncan George, and St Mirren's directors felt they could not continue to back Charnley, who, along with Barry Lavety and Paul Lambert, was sent off in the game against Ayr. His dismissal was the latest blackspot in a volatile career.

Charnley also had to leave two other clubs, Ayr and Clydebank.”

Agreed. I noticed that too. I’m sure his agent still secured a wad of cash up front. 😂

He also went apeshit at Tynecastle one night where he kicked, punched, spat and generally fought with several Hearts players and stamped on a player's leg.  As i said he was wound up but he went way beyond an acceptable response
