We've had plenty of fair-to-hellish duffers but only two really stick out for me.

1. Jim Gardiner, who we got from Motherwell in part exchange for Paul Lambert. He seemed to think that coming down from the premier league and playing for St. Mirren was beneath him. I remember one game where he gave the North Bank the self-abuse hand gesture and recieved it back in spades. One player I wasn't sad to see the back of.

2. Micheal Renfrum (sp?), I read an article after he left us that he had been dissapointed by the standard of football in the SPL. I know you'll never read this Micheal, but you never stood out as being anything special.

PS. I'll add a third player.

3. Chic Charnley for being nowhere near as good as he thought he was.

A lot of the players's mentioned came in either as free's or fairly cheap. The player's who really done us in were the expensive flop's of the Fitzpatrick (first spell)/Hay era and were pish. I was working down South at the time and didn't see many games but names like Wishart/Stickroth/Archibald/Manley/Baillie/Reid spring to mind. I believe most of our debt is a legacy from the ridiculous contracts some of these players got.

Reading through some of these old names... some right duffers without doubt.

However, none of them were part of a saints team that were bottom of the second tier in December, like the current lot are.

These historically derided players never suffered that ignomy.  How many of the current lot would get in the top 5 now?

In recent times , I worked beside James Gardiner and he was a decent guy with a great sense of humour. I asked him about his Saint Mirren era and he said that he got on well with Jimmy Bone but that the fans hated him:blink:, he did get a lot of abuse as I recall but hey , at least Peter Leonard seems to have dropped from these lists. .

Like I said previously I discount incompetence when deciding on my list of "Worst Ever" players - for me they have to have done something above & beyond  this. Because of this I wouldn't add any of our current crop into mix as yet, although I'd add Granny Danger who IIRC badmouthed us on social media during our relegation season (the last one ) despite Sean Kelly being a distinct improvement on him during 2013/14.

Going off-topic someone pointed out that GD was doing well at Carlisle these days. Nice to see Kelly getting some gametime at Wimbledon, I know his form deteriorated during the TC/GT/IM/AR debacle but he was not alone in this and I never felt there was a problem with attitude or effort.

Oh yeah, that's me up to 4 now.

Only 5? You could easily list every single player from the Coughlin years or from last season and this season. The sad thing is it's really hard not to be revisionist over stuff like this. Jim Gardner and Gary McVie were easily the worst I'd seen prior to the Hendrie era but I'd imagine Gardner these days would look like a superstar compared to some of the dross over the last 10 years. I'll ignore the likes of Jaison McGrath - who was obviously shit before St Mirren signed him and who proved not to be good enough to trouble the first team squad last season despite the lack of talent.

From the current squad I have never seen Jordan Stewart have a good game of football, ever. His distribution is dreadful and his tackling halfhearted at best and at worst utterly woeful. The game that stands out in my memory most was the Alloa game last year when he started. Oh my god was he shite. I've no idea how he managed to last another season under Alex Rae, or why he's still regarded as being in and around the current squad by Jack Ross.

There's no secret that I'm also no fan of Stevie Mallan and his performances this season. For some reason others give him a leeway despite all the evidence because Dundee offered some money for him last season. The sad thing is he actually looked like he had some promise about him when he first broke into the first team but I think his massive ego has gotten the better of him. f**k knows what he works on at training cause it certainly isn't passing, tackling, shooting, marking, dribbling, ball control, or set pieces. |'ve been assured by BinEK that I've got it wrong about this lad and some St Mirren fans tell me the reason Mallan can't do any of these things this season is because Alex Rae and Jack Ross have asked him to play as a Central Midfielder in position rather than a central midfielder that swans about 5 yards out of position, but I reckon this dire St Mirren side will come to be the pinnacle of his career.

And another from the current squad Jason Naismith. Another player who clearly derides the supposed value of having your own training ground for players to train on. This season he's started off looking out of shape, got worse as the season progressed and has made simple and basic defending errors all season long. He's also a player who didn't impress me even when others were happy to talk him up. I didn't rate him as a right back and was told he was a centre half, but he wasn't good enough at centre half to depose Marc McAusland - another absolute haddy - and he continues to play at Right Back even with the lack of quality at Centre Half available to Jack Ross.

As mentioned Marc McAusland. His time in the stripes was so obviously a case of nepotism. He had a wee burst of pace but even that could't help him when it came to his woeful positional sense, his utter inability to read a game, and what often was exposed as a complete lack of judgement and self awareness. Happier to chuck it than to chase back, happier to blame others than to take responsibility for his mistakes, and a player who time and time again could be faulted for the vast majority of the large numbers of goals that St Mirren would concede with him in the team. It's no surprise to see his career slide even further down the pan since he left St Mirren.

And finally Mark Crilly. Stewart Gilmour talked him up like he was the new Pele but anyone with any sort of football brain who had bothered to watch him play at Stirling Albion would have seen just how far fetched those claims were going to be. He wasn't even a decent Third Division player, never mind the player that John Coughlin was supposed to build his third rate side around.

I could easily has added the likes of Brian McGinty, Robert Dunn, Christoper Wreh, and Paul McHale to the list. Wage thieves the lot of them.
