None of the above are/were on three year deals so £500 per week isn't an appropriate comparison.

    ******************************

These were the average top flight players wages last season according to the Daily Record - so for Heaton's transfer fee we could have got an extra Bottom 6 standard player for what will be a tough season.

No, but the combined wage for just the one season for that lot would have been more than £75k!

I'd rather we signed quality than stacking the squad with rubbish who don't play.

Those wages you've quoted will be for all staff employed by the club's, not just the players. Yet again, you've gone to a lot of effort to post something that is completely irrelevant!

If an extra £500 per week gets us a better quality of player than Kirkpatrick, Todd, Hilson, Stewart & Darryl Duffy then that will do for me!

On a player you've never seen in action! :P

But it doesn't matter if I've seen him in action! I'm not the manager! :P

Putting it into perspective, £500 per week is probably less than the wages we were paying either Kirkpatrick, Todd, Hilson or Stewart.

    They were far bigger gambles!

    Indeed.

But we were never going to pay a transfer fee for an out of contract Halkett.

£75k over 3 years is less than £500 per week. In comparison to a wage its nothing. Its trivial.

Its a gamble I'm happy to see us take rather than signing the same old never has beens / never will be's like Halkett!

We could debate every Saints transfer since the dawn of time but my point remains that not all transfers stand an equal chance of success and that it's possible to make some assumptions beforehand.

    Indeed.

And Heaton may or may not turn out to be a raging success who we sell on for £1 million.

But we know for sure that Halkett will always be worth nothing!

Mark Reid came to us from Charlton :P - he failed cos he was crocked.

Baillie wasn't a regular for for a not particularly strong Celtic side I'd have had him down closer to the middle/possible of the spectrum.

They both came into a club on the slide.

My opinion is so far this window we've signed 4 possibles and one middle/possible (McGinn).

Every transfer is different - I'm happy to wait and see my how my judgement on this seasons batch turn out.

Steven Thompson wasn't a regular with Burnley!

They are only "possibles" because you personally haven't heard of them or seen them in action!

Personally, I'm glad that Stubbs isn't limiting himself to signing players that you've personally heard of or seen in action!

All this talk of signing experienced players, players who have played at this level is nonsense.

The only criteria should be whether they are good enough!

I have no idea whatsoever whether these new players will be good enough. But whether I've heard of them or not has no bearing whatsoever on how successful they will be!

Steven Thompson came to us directly from Championship club Burnley, Eric Djemba-Djemba had his contract terminated by his previous club and was a free agent - one of the transfers was clearly  more likely to succeed. :specs

Callum Ball came directly to us from Championship side Derby County!

Lex Baillie & Mark Reid came directly to us from Celtic!

What is wrong is the assertion that they will be shite , before a ball is kicked. As is any claim that they will be a success.

Indeed, any signing can go any way.

What IS wrong though, is stating that the probability of Heaton being a success is in any way linked to the level of English football that Harry Davis was playing in at one time!:lol:

Halkett was a standout at Championship level last season, made team of the year plus he wouldn't have cost £75k or received a 3 year deal.

Heaton comes from two levels below where Davis came from and returned to (no fees involved) and one below Kellerman (no fee involved), Heaton is like the US Air Force - oversexed, overpaid and over here!

    catch-22b.jpg?w=700

Halkett was such a standout that nobody wanted him.... and he was free!

Not sure what the level that Davis came from has to do with comparing Halkett with Heaton!

Degenerating into posting a pointless photo highlights how bad your point is! :P

I'd have much preferred us signing Halkett to Heaton.

Calling a new player a possible is not prejudging him as a player.

Halkett has no pedigree at our level either!

What you really mean is that you'd rather we signed players that you've personally heard of or seen in action as opposed to who the manager thinks is the better player!

Heaton has come from a club that had a higher average gate than Livingston last season.

The only signing so far with any pedigree at our level is McGinn.

John McGinn, Kenny McLean, Frank McAvennie, Ian Ferguson, Paul Lambert, Peter Weir, Frank McDougall, Billy Stark, Frank McGarvey, Lex Richardson, Billy Thomson, Steve Clarke, Tommy Wilson, etc.

They didn't have any pedigree at our level either before they played in our first team!

I'd take them any day over the Lex Baillie, Mark Reid, Jim Gardner, Alan Irvine, Andy Dow type of player that you clearly favour!:P

After a ruthless clearout by JR at the end of last season and losing two more on top of that we've signed a guy who was not an automatic first pick from a club that got relegated last season, 3 non-league players and one fringe player with Bolton who made 1 league and 2 cup appearances for them - all possibles but we've yet to sign one player that I'd regard as a probable at our new level.

Not all Stubbsy's fault but I'm waiting for the first serious "must go" thread...…………..

Your assessment of the standard of the 5 players we have signed is irrelevant!

As for the 'ruthless clearout' who exactly are you taking about?

One or two players who made the odd appearance, some of whom were out on loan anyway?

We're hardly going to miss Gary Irvine and Darryl Duffy!

The reality is that we've lost 2 first team players who we wanted to keep, Morgan & Davis. And Davis only started 20 league games! And he's been replaced by Heaton already!

Plus we brought in 3 in the Jan transfer window, Flynn, Mullen & Hippolyte. Add Erhahon to that and its effectively 9 new players!

Must admit I’m starting to get a bit nervous with the lack of transfer activity. As it stands the squad appears to be nowhere near strong enough to survive in the top league. Obviously hope I’m wrong but time is marching on. Come on Stubbsy get cracking!

    Eh? We've signed 5 players!

  13. I’ve taken you off ignore to ask these two questions, so simple yes or no answers will suffice please. This is not the first time you have accused me of deliberately being racist on an open forum. I have had to ask the moderators to delete one of your other posts, but as you are continuing, I will contact them to ask for further action to be taken. So, here goes with the two questions. 1. You repeatedly accuse me of knowingly being racist on a public forum. Have you, or are you going to, report me to the authorities? 2. Have you picked up on, and hounded, the poster who used the term ‘chinky’ in the stadium naming post?

Yes or No please, before I now hit the ‘report post’ button and ask for stronger action to be taken. Thanks.

     1. No. Also, all I’ve done is state that you used a racial slur to make a joke. I’ve no idea whether you are actually a racist.

    2. Don’t know anything about it

  14. That's some crowd for a midweek cup tie, I take it Third Lanark were a pretty well supported team?

Third Lanark finished in 3rd place in the league that season.

They’d also won the League Cup just the season before.

That also makes the 8-0 result so astonishing.

Third Lanark were a major club in Scottish football.

  15. No they don't. default_laugh.png

You cannot expect others to know what will and won't cause you to feel upset and needy. That is completely unreasonable,

I’m pretty sure that what is said at a KKK meeting doesn’t offend those attending.

    Doesn’t mean it’s not racist!

Pozbaird used a racial slur to make a joke.

    It wasn’t unconscious.

  16. I thought before the start of the tournament that Belgium might have a chance.

They are looking good. Their front 3 of Hazard, Lukaku and Mertens is arguably the best in the tournament (maybe Argentina had a claim but they look to be out).

They have class in midfield with De Bruyne, a solid central defence with Vertonghen and Alderweireld and one of the best keepers in the world with Courtois.

They even have super subs in Fellaini and Batshuayi to throw on.

WTF is Boyata doing in the side though? [emoji23]

They just need to get Kompany or Vermaelen fit!
