  1. With your way of thinking though it seems to be my way or no way. How can that be freedom of expression to others.

You say words of intolerance and bigot are being used, it is myself that is using these words for the simple fact that you are an atheist who can only see his own opinion and as such no religion organization shall hold their services at the football stadium because of the way I think.

You also wrote that if it stops one person from going to a service from our fan base then your opinion will have worked. Who are you to speak or control what other fans want to do.

Can you not see your in the wrong on this subject

Absolutely, that is why I have expressed my opinion. If I did not have an opinion then I would not have felt the need to express it.

    Quite obvious really.

  2. In what way would this be "dangerous"?

These people would still be going of their own free will. Are you wanting to deny freedom of choice now?

I won't be going and neither will you. They won't be bothering either of us, so what exactly is the problem here other than your own personal opinion? They will be meeting in an empty building at a time when neither of us will be there or will have anything to do with them. They won't be passing the communion cup around at half time so whats the problem?

You are a typical intolerant atheist. Let them be.

There you are again with the insults.

Its a great freedom that we enjoy whereby anyone can decide to attend any place of worship. I do however object to my football club becoming associated with ANY religious organisation.

Throughout this thread I have seen the words "intolerant" and "bigot" thrown about without justification against anyone who does not agree that St Mirren should be associated with a religious organisation. Its a shame really as a reasoned debate may have held some interest.

For the record I do think that any organisation that teaches that the world in which we live is only 6000 yrs old is indeed dangerous!

What insult will that opinion provoke?

  3. I think the answer to each and every one of the above questions is "who cares?"

If anyone wants to use the stadium when there's no match on they'll pay for it and generate money for the club. You don't have to be associated with it and neither do the club.

You don't subscribe to the beliefs and values of the Scouts, would you have a problem with them using a room at SMP?

No but unless the scouts have changed since I attended them then the scouts do not seekk to indoctrinate people into a system of belief, unlike the Church.

Churches of any denomination have there place and we as indiviuals can attend these churches is we so desire but to bring in any church/mosque/synagogue etc to a FOOTBALL club is a very dangerous and reckless thing to do.

  4. I'd rather have the stand filled by churchgoers on a Sunday morning than a bunch of boring, bitter atheist dullards like you.

Our club is named after a Christian saint. You must have a small brain haemorrhage every time you mention his name.

Maybe you should go to the church under the stand when it starts up. It might make you a decent person. <_<

Not at all Reynard and your simplistic reply is well.....simplistic.

The fact that our beloved club is named after a real person is something that adds character and history to the "St Miren story". Indeed the Christian past of Paisley as a town is something we should all understand and appreciate, Paisley abbey for example is steeped in history and central to the culture of our town.

In a modern age however education and a better appreciation of the sciences has resulted in the inevitable move away from religion. That is a good thing as educated people are now free to make there own choices.

The obvious danger with having organised religion at our beloved ground is an obvious one. If just ONE person, be it adult or child, decides to attend church because that church is affiliated with our club then that is very dangerous indeed. The church/mosque/synagogue or whatever it may has NO place at a football club like ours.

PS Your assumption that people who do not attend church are in some way "less decent" makes you look really stupid indeed. Athiests are not bitter people or dullards. Your unwelcome insults detract from any credability you may have had in this debate. Yes Reynard you have indeed let yourself down.

  5. Why not?

Have you read this thread? Thye amount of people jumping to the defence of a religious organisation astounds me.

Anyway will this group of worshippers be paying the £10k to join the CIC or are they getting a freebie?

Will they use the affiliation with St Mirren FC to promote themselves in the eyes of the young thus assisting them in indoctrinating the young into there bizarre ways?

In a modern society should we really accept religion at face value when the creationism story has been completely and utterly disproved by Darwinism?

Is religion really a force for good or a force for evil bearing in mind how it stands in the way of science and tries to undermine our understanding of the real origins of life?

Is a football forum really the place to have such a debate?

If not then does that indicate that a football club is not the place for a religious organisation at all?

Is it fair to expose children to these religious zealots?

Will these zealots issue the Supra's with free tambourines as a thank you?

    What about a triangle then?

    Or a guitar?

Is this the beginings of a cult?

Could we have bible readings over the tannoy system prior to kick off?

Are you aware of the story of the Sodomites?

Is this really an acceptable way to treat woman in a modern society?

Exactly who at the club is pushing this drive toward organised religion at our football club?

    Were the Crusade's really wrong?

What about the second Crusade then?

    And the third?

Should we have another Crusade, maybe an oil crusade?

Who is the better fighter, Moses or Jesus?

  6. It seems some people see St Mirren as some sort of elitist organisation and have no desire to see the fan base rise. It's pretty sad the there is such a high level of intolerance within our support. Hardly a good foundation for a community club :(

    What nonsense.

Religion is a private matter for each individual and not something I wish to see my football club associated with.

Would an athiest society be welcome at St Mirren park? Probably not.

It is religion that breeds intolerance, high school level history even teaches that.

    As I said...nonsense!

  7. A church?

A church at a football ground?

A church at St Mirren park?

FFS this CIC must be desperate for money.

We could have church on a sunday, scouts on a monday, BB's on a tues, devil worshipping on a wednesday, bingo on a thursday and hairdressing/basket weaving on a friday with Saturday usually booked for football!

Anyway I hope this "church" will become fully paid up members on the CIC at the £10,000 per annum.

  8. The history and background so far;

Stewart Gilmour has joined forces with Alan Marshall, Bryan McCausland, George Campbell and Evelyn Purves (widow of the late Jim) to offer for sale their combined stake in the club (52%)

The other major shareholder who was on the board was Gordon Scott who made two separate offers to buy this controlling interest in the club, his offers were rejected by the selling consortium. Gordon resigned from the club and has invested his money into property in Vegas.

Richard Atkinson is the head of a consortium who made an approach to buy the club last year. This consortium have agreed a fee to purchase the club, for £2m.

The model being used to purchase the club is complex and has never been done before but suffice to say Richard and his consortium are not investing their own money to buy the football club, instead they are seeking to fund this through grants/loans and from forming business partnerships within the local community.

The end goal is that the football club would then become owned by a Community Interest Company (CiC). A CiC can attract grants and gets breaks in terms of the tax it pays, and any profits made by the CiC need to be invested back in. The CiC would aim to generate revenue through other means over and above the traditional football club we have today.

I think the vision is to use the infrastructure the club has now (Ralston and St.Mirren Park) and the brand, and the support within the local community, to do this.

Since the funding applications take a long time to go through, and since Richard and his partners have no previous experience of running a football club, and since there are no other interested parties looking to buy the club, it was agreed that Richard and Chris Stewart (one of the consortium members) should join the board so that they could see how the club was run and experience the different and unique challenges which face football clubs versus "traditional businesses".

Similarly this allowed them to bring some fresh impetus to the boardroom and this has begun to manifest itself now with a few changes being made, the most recent of which I guess is the decision to move from Provans to a different merchandising model.

I don't know how far the funding applications have got, I don't know when they are likely to go through (or not as the case may be) and I don't know what happens if they don't get the funding.

That is the situation as it currently stands as far as I am aware.

Really good post Div. Some of that is news to ne.

  9. I don't like this thread. Gus has gone and some people just have to deal with it.

Danny Lennon is quite rightly getting stick after the three abysmal performances that his team have just put in but that is no reason for re-opening a debate that has been done to death and undermines the current manager.

Hopefully this thread will die the quick death it deserves
