  1. So if that was the case, out of the 9 teams from South America, 6 of them would've qualified for this year's World Cup? That's absolutely ridiculous.

    Also, do the Oceania countries just give up football too?

    You do know that traditionally the Europeans do the best out of the confederations - one blip (i.e. this year's World Cup - which hasn't even finished yet) doesn't make much of a difference to the stats overall.

    Number of European semi-finalists: -

    2010 = 3

    2006 = 4

    2002 = 2

    1998 = 3

    1994 = 3

    1990 = 3

    1986 = 3

    1982 = 4

    Europe traditionally do worse in South America, as do the other confederations when it's held in Europe (or practically anywhere else really). One poor World Cup (if it ends up that way for the Europeans) is unusual. I will predict right now, the European confederation will be the strongest in Russia 2018.

    Finally, what 5 teams replacing the 5 removed from Europe do you think would've put on a better showing than the European ones?

    There's 6 South American teams at this World Cup. 4 of them have already qualified for the last 16, and the other 2 may join them in the next week.

    I'm not saying there's not elite level European teams, there is. Because we have nations like Spain and Germany etc, does that mean it should be easier for our continents no hopers like Bosnias and England to qualify than it is for exciting developing nations like Burkina Faso and Jamaica? They couldn't do any worse, could they? And they'd add some diversity to the tournament.

    Why this disparity? Why this accident of geography? It you're lucky enough to be close to a lot of elite teams you should get more qualifying spots?

    It's the World Cup, it should be for the World. It's not the European Championships plus invited guests.

    Edit I'd have the winner of the Oceania section - New Zealand - play off against the 6th placed Asian team.

  2. Puzzled?

    Do you really believe, and this would only be an opinion, there are better teams from other areas?

    Yes. New Zealand were unbeaten at the last World Cup, they aren't here. Would also love to see teams like Panama ( who just missed out ) and more African teams like Egypt etc.

    Blatter's spoken before about reducing European contingent, let's hope this World Cup makes him do it.

  3. I see no reason why a european team can't win this tournament in brazil, the last time the world cup was in south america was in 1986 in mexico.

    The game has changed dramatically since then, Germany and holland have played games early afternoon, mid afternoon and evening in this world cup and have

    shown they can cope easily with the conditions, It is not out of the question for it to be a holland v germany final.

    A European team may win the tournament.

    It doesn't mean there's not far too many of them in the tournament, there's 12 for goodness sake. What's the point in no hopers like Bosnia, England and Greece taking away spots from other confederations?

    In future I'd have:

    8 Europe

    6 South America

    6 Asia

    6 Africa

    4 Central and North America

    1 host

    1 play off winner - play off between 4 biggest confederations.

    Not sure about your Germany point either. They beat another European side easily, but had to come from behind to snatch a point against an African team.

  4. There's far too many European teams in the tournament, and they're stinking the place up.

    Another night, another one of them out. Spain, England, Bosnia, Portugal and now Croatia.

    Hopefully FIFA cuts back on the amount of places allocated to UEFA for future tournaments.

  5. No other SPFL club would have him

    In their team. Says it all

    For a start, there's 42 SPFL clubs. I'm sure you don't mean teams like Annan and Albion Rovers wouldn't have him.

    I assume you mean Premiership teams. If so, this is just your opinion and it's based on nothing at all.

    He was a mainstay of a team that had a better defensive record than 5 teams in the league last year. If they wouldn't have him, they'd be pretty foolish.

  6. You're clearly smitten, the referrence to a stick is a bit of a Freudian slip

    I like speculation, especially where i get to speculate on the performance of the "we know somethng you don't know" brigade (they are not doing well just now). I am phoning someone who is involved in all of our dealings later this week and could easily call him now and ask for an update, but I choose to wait and see how things go and not try to portray myself as a "look at me-i'm a special case" fan boy.

    I didn't have a go at anyone, i just offered an observation based on experience and a degree of amusement (you are currently supplying the bulk of that with your wee rants)

    I'll use a smiley to make it clear that i am as lights as a feather-you've clearly had a bit of bother getting your napper round that- it's only a forum

    And you don't get to tell me what to do, sonny lol.gif

    Well this is a slight improvement from having a raging go at your own teams fans for something we didn't do at a game you weren't even at, like you did last season.

    You take football and the internet too seriously, away and have a lie down and relax.

  7. If i took it seriously i wouldn't find it laughable, would I?

    Reading what is actuallly written rather than applying your own interpretation would help you an awful lot.

    Dont thank me for the advice though.

    You're having a go at people posting speculation in the speculation thread.

    If you don't like speculation, don't read this thread.

    In the mean time, remove that stick from your arse and lighten up.

  8. I know where the info comes from-someone who has grafted himself onto a player in order to feed of the snippets, but there is a laughable sense of smugness and "i know something you don't know" about all of this

    Jeez, you take the speculation thread very very seriously don't you?

    Relax, it's only a game!

  9. Correct me if i am missing something here so the club have agreed 2 deals as stated above & members of board/management etc have passed this information on to either Top Cat or Buddiecat or someone else who in turn has talked to the 2 cats, so what is 2 stop these players/clubs/agents changing their mind as obviously deals are not signed yet??? So how can anyone say deals are happening this week??? I'm not trying to be a smart arse here but just confused why we start telling people about signings before they are confirmed.

    Miaow... Just some speculation from normally reliable sources.

    I have no idea who either player is, but I've got a gut feeling we're going to go back in for Jimmy Floyds nephew. Him and Tommy got on well in his first spell with us and he's a free agent .... We could do worse.

  10. Delighted with our fixtures actually. Only two pre split trips to the highlands, as opposed to 4 last season. Dundee and Hamilton at home twice each before the split...Only one trip to Celtic Park scheduled.

    Perfect! I've not been as optimistic about a season for a long time.

    I'm confident we are going to set a record high position for this century - 7th or above!

  11. I think it's just about sustainable but the worry is that we seem to be having trouble signing players even at the moment. I hope we get a few on board for the coming season but are we struggling? I hope not. I really do believe that cutting the first team pool's wages would mean relegation. Catch 22 stuff.

    Why are we struggling exactly? Have Killie or St Johnstone signed anyone yet? Nope. I doubt they're panicking yet. I believe we offered contracts to two Scottish based players, Ridgers and Stevenson.

    Ridgers joined, Stevenson signed a 2 year deal with Thistle instead of a 1 year deal with us. Dundee and Hamilton have signed a couple of crocks and a couple of first division players. Should we be concerned by that?

    As TC said, contracts of English players typically expire at the end of June. I expect the majority of our signings will be players who played in England last season along with a couple of loans. Therefore expect the first couple of weeks in July to be our busiest time with regards to incoming players.

  12. I have enough of a grasp of basic economics to know that paying players over £1000 a week on a crowd of 4000 is directly contributing to us having a wage to turnover ratio of 70%. Clearly (or maybe not Lex - I never underestimate your ability to misunderstand basic stuff), this is simply unsustainable which is why wages need to be coming down.

    By all means enjoy cloud cuckoo land though if you think it should be otherwise.

    Is our only income crowds? No.

    Unsustainable? How is it unsustainable? We've been doing it for years and we're still here, and we're debt free.

    I don't know what century your head is stuck in, but it's certainly not this one.

  13. Wasn't the case last year, must've made some extra money from winning the league cup yet we had a mass clear out, bringing in around half the number of players we let go.

    Our club doesn't work like that, our fans seem to think of we sell McLean, McGinn most of that money will be reinvested in the playing staff! There is no way that'll happen so as a supporter I'd rather just keep them since we never benefit from any income anyway!

    Where do you think the extra money went then?

  14. I don't understand this mentality.

    We simply do not have mega-rich owners. The current BoD have transformed a club at risk from going into administration/liquidation to running pretty much break even year on year.

    They have earned the right to decide how the operating expenses are distributed. I'm pleased to see that the foreign training trip has been cancelled this year, as it is just another major expense when we have quality facilities at our training facility.

    In the time they have been in control we have won the Div 1 twice, Challenge trophy and League Cup - there are two clubs 7 miles west and east who have boards who have been willing to speculate and both are running at significant losses year on year which could result in administration or liquidation.

    Neither of those two clubs are currently in the top league and neither have won any major domestic honours in recent seasons.

    I must stress if YOU want to change this "penny-pinching" approach then I'm sure Bryan McAusland would be more than happy to meet you.

    Exactly.

    How can a club like ours 'penny pinch'?

    What goes in goes out. The more that comes in, the more that goes out. Simple economics really.

  15. Every single poll on this is wrong for the simple fact that they have no precedent for this type of vote.

    This means they lack the knowledge of how to make the necessary corrections.

    Sorry I assumed everyone knew this.

    Commonsense should be telling you that it's delusional to think there are almost 1.5 million Scots who prefer to be run by a Tory-UKIP coalition than to be run from Edinburgh by ourselves.

    Give it up, you've completely lost the plot.
