I think they may have had the pacey Henri Anier and Lionel Ainsworth beside Sutton
Playing as wingers... as I suggested we do earlier in this thread.
-
the Syrians are given everything while poorer locals look on in bilwiderment.
When you say that they are "given everything", what exactly do you mean?
What is it that the locals expect to be given to them?
-
Really? He didn't have someone with pace playing off of him?
Correct. He really didn't.
-
With Irvine and Stewart I do not see him signing another left back.
Agreed.
In Rae's interview he says that once he can get this week's signing done (presumably Sutton) then that leaves scope for 3 or 4 more players.
He specifically mentions needing strikers (plural), a goalkeeper and a left sided player.
Therefore, I take that as meaning that once he gets Sutton, another striker, a keeper and a left sided player then that may be it. Maybe space for just one more but I doubt it'll be a left back.
-
Exactly, Sutton is a goal scorer not the type who can play the lone striker role.
Albeit, he scored 22 league goals in season 13/14 with Motherwell as a lone striker.
-
What about Stewart Kean?
Still only 33. Just had a good season with Hurlford.
Partnering Sutton up front and Lappin supplying the crosses, it could work.
-
Many of Sutton's goals came as a result of him latching onto long balls down the middle.
-
Sutton is a striker who never relied on pace or mobility.
His skill is being able to get in the right place at the right time and finding space.
I reckon he can do it at our level next season.
I always like citing his winner on the 3-2 game at Fir Park.
Free kick comes in and a batch of players all go for the ball.
Sutton takes a step back however, the ball breaks to him and... Boom!
The thing is, if the ball hadn't broken to him then no-one would have noticed. And that is what Sutton does throughout games.
He gets himself into positions where a chance might come his way.
He won't have lost that ability.
-
Aye, but nothing to indicate he will score.........oh, er, wait. ????

After Ian Harte I believe nothing til the ink is dry on the contract
How do you know when the ink is dry on the contract though?
It may already be dry but you just don't know about it...

Sutton is a reasonable striker for the Scottish Championship, provided he gets a player that can cross a ball to him( Carey) would be ideal, however I doubt it will be him given the wages he will be on at Plymouth Argyle, but I would not be impressed if Lappin was signed, he has lost a lot of his pace since he was last with us.
Lappin didn't have pace in the first place!

Having a go at me by suggesting my behaviour is similar to that of someone who has a mental illness. You're using mental health symptoms as a way of having a go at me... Because you think it's funny and will generate laughs. You seem to think that someone who suffers from mental illness (either me ANother) is to be laughed at.
If I wrote something that vaguely made you think of an ethnic minority would you call me a p*ki or a n*gger?
The "I'm only getting at him" argument doesn't wash and is the first refuge of the fascist. If you're using mental health stereotypes to "get at" me, you're also getting at people who have mental health issues. Wise up!
Salmondbuddie appears to have a deep hatred of disabled people.
The natsi gang on this forum like to hound anyone who disagreed with them.
It's worse than Tenko!

I'm well aware he was playing wide right!Naw. Now playing in his better position of wide right.
When we had Yardley & Laverty played together we had Junior Mendes who had a free role and went from wing to wing.
If we play with 2 wide players with some mobility and Clarkson plays in the number 10 role then I think it can work fine.
If we bring in another striker to play alongside Sutton with Clarkson behind then Gallagher won't be in the side at all!
-
Lost of comments about Sutton & Clarkson having no pace or mobility.
Bit like Yardley & Lavety then...
-
Happy with this, good signing.
We now need a mobile striker to compliment Sutton and Clarkson.
Isn't that Gallagher?

There are many countries who will look at Wales and Northern Ireland and think they should be ahead of them.I'm sorry we should be above Wales and Norn Iron
We should be producing a better standard of player
You right about attendances and club sides but we should have better players for the National Team
These countries, particularly N Ireland, are themselves punching above their weight.
And what really separates Wales from Scotland is one world class player.
If Gareth Bale was Scottish, we would be going to the Euros and they wouldn't.
But you are right, the standard of player in Scotland is poor.
Partly because the Scottish culture in Scotland is one of laziness.
This country is full of fat lazy people.
-
Attendances in Scotland are higher now than they were in the late 60s and early 80s when Scotland were ranked in the top 3 in the UEFA rankings.
That is despite much lower ground capacities, higher prices, live TV and huge Old Firm travelling supports.
Attendances are not a problem.
We have no chance at club football anymore. The big clubs don't just attract the best players in their own country. They attract the best players in the world.
Bosman means you can't keep a team together. The disparity in wages means you have no hope.
The days of clubs like Aberdeen and Dundee Utd building great sides are gone.
Scotland used to punch above it's weight. We are now where we should be!

Jamie Vardy seemed to do okay playing through the middle by running at people with Leicester.Jimmy Nichol and Alex Rae (and me) would not agree with that. Nichol had Gallagher at Cowdenbeath and played him wide saying that Gallagher needed space to control the ball and run and people. He could be ineffective when tightly marked as a striker. Murray played him as a striker and he was poor. Rae moved him wide and he looks a far better player. We do need legs through the middle but I do not think Gallagher is the answer.
And he had plenty of space.
If we played the game properly, ie sit back, give away possession and lump the ball forward when we win it the Gallagher would be good through the middle.
If we persist with attempting to keep possession and pass our way through a defence where Gallagher is tightly marked, then yes, Gallagher is better out wide.
-
The fact is that Ian Murray is a fanny and was an awful appointment.
Yet his appointment was widely welcomed on here and anyone who disagreed was abused.
You know who you are.
You deserve what you got.

I thought building that big stand at the away end was a bit of a milestone around our neck
Barr wanting his money each month
Correct.
-
Yes, Fitzpatrick's signings were covered by sales. But his signings were still (mainly) a complete waste. Gordon Smith was behind it.
We really went into debt with the arrival of Davie Hay.
His signings weren't covered by sales.
We then got relegated and then built the Caley Stand.
Hay's signings, relegation and the Caley Stand is what nearly brought the club to its knees.
-
Sutton & Clarkson would be a pretty old and immobile strikeforce.
Then again, Yardley & Laverty wasn't a very mobile combination either!
If we have a couple of decent wide players (Gallagher on the right and someone new on the left), then it would probably work with Clarkson playing in a deeper role.
-
Well at least he has experience at this level. Another "solid", uninspiring season. I reckon Rae has found Wee Gus's "How to win the First Division" unpublished manuscript.
I thought that the signings of Charlie Adam and John Sutton were very inspiring.
-
The general consensus seems to be that no-one can remember him ever playing but that he's a good signing....
Most of our previous centre half signings from lesser clubs have turned out not bad. Scott Walker, Darren McGregor, John Potter, Chris Innes.
The odd one not so good. Ronnie McQuilter.
