Sorry JS, although on reflection it may have sounded like it, I wasn’t having a go about the 2 clubs thing, just merely stating a fact that I don’t understand the concept. I couldn’t give a shit about any other club side, regardless of what country or league they play in. Supporting a football team to me is driven by a sense of belonging i.e. the club belongs to me because I’m from Paisley. It falls into the same category for me as not understanding people who don’t support their home town team (assuming they have one of course). Your allegiance to Newcastle is obvious. Out of nothing more than curiosity, what is your link with St. Mirren?

Naturally there's a  difference  in the levels of affinity with the 2 clubs and that sense of belonging you mentioned means I'm affected more by what happens at NUFC. Its my local team and therefore  my 1st love. Having said that I've  loved my experiences with the saints over the years. It's the 1st other score I look out for and I've generally got to at least half a dozen saints games a season. Only done one so far this season. TBH the affection of saints fans for Jack Ross,  Lewis Morgan etc, and to a certain extent SAFC because that's  where they are just now is putting me off a bit.  My saints interest stems from a few weeks spent with a schoolmate and his aunt in Bridge of Weir in 1983. Didn't  even know where St Mirren played before  I went and my only knowledge  of them were the team in black and white at the back of my panini sticker album. Got to about 3 saints games in that time as well as watching other games in the area. Loved everything about the club. Love Street was great. Seen a draw at ibrox at new year and loved the way we held the 'big' boys. Should that be bigot boys? ☺ COYS.

So unless you’ve got the support of all of the fans, all of the time, then your coat is on a shoogly peg? Nonsense. Ross is rightly lauded by the majority of Sunderland fans. Saying the fans might turn on him if they don’t get promoted is a work of art in stating the obvious. It’s a bit will saying Rangers fans will turn on Gerrard if they don’t finish in the top 6. True but bloody unlikely.  Sunderland will get promoted because they have s bloody good manager who is going to get them there.

By your own admission, as a Newcastle fan (never did understand the concept of supporting two football teams by the way) you are never going to say anything positive about Sunderland.

I haven't suggested JRs' job should be in any danger. In response to you saying JR seemed popular in the RTG thread i merely pointed out that before a recent upturn in results there were SAFC fans who were doubting him. Even quotes in that thread, from Sunderland fans  said so. Many a caller to radio Newcastles' nightly football phone in doubted him. I won't say anything positive about SAFC but i will be honest. There's every chance they'll go up but i think even Sunderland fans would admit it's hardly a given. Don't have to explain myself but to help you understand the concept i'm a season ticket holder at NUFC but occasionally watch saints on free weekends and have done since the age of sixteen, 35 years ago. Different league, different country, don't compete with each other so it's fine by me and i'll continue to do what i enjoy.

As some of the posters in that thread pointed out, he hasn't  always had the full support of the Sunderland fans over the last couple of months. Could all turn again if they miss out on the ultimate goal of promotion.

If he doesn't get them promoted this season he won't be there next season.

I so hope he's not there long, nor Lewis  Morgan for that matter. Both did fantastically well for saints but as a Newcastle  and StMirren fan I'm very uncomfortable  with  the SAFC links as you'd  imagine.

  4. I can remember  coming up for a game v Clydebank in the 90s only for it to be called off. Had nothing else to do but spend the whole day in the 'hole in the wa'

. Ended up a bit worse for wear. Someone escorted me on the train back to central and said I was singing woof woof, black and white army  to a dog. We won the re-arranged game 8-0 and of course I wasn't  there.

Why so much hatred between Sunderland and Newcastle ?

Friendly rivalry is fair enough, but why hatred ?

And where do Middlesborough fit in to all this animosity ?

Hard to explain shull.  It's certainly OTT but it's  just there. I think Boro fans see it more of a derby v Newcastle/Sunderland  than fans of either club. That 30/40..ish mile gap means it's  a bit more watered down.

  6. As someone Newcastle based who's  had a part time love of saints for most of my 51 years, any association  with that shower of sh**e obviously  appalls me. Having said that, they're  a good set of lads and lasses from the bankhouse. I'd  like to think most just fancied a day out.

Which one  might have played Newcastle United?. It was a midweek game. I was amazed at the number of their fans who had travelled midweek.

Newcastle did spend a lot of time along side Oxford Utd in the old 2nd division during the 80's and early 90's. I can also remember visiting the Manor Ground for part of a two legged league cup tie around 1983. A very compact ground with a great atmosphere. They were in the old 3rd division at the time but were emerging as a decent side. Had the likes of Kevin Brock and a certain John Aldridge IIRC. Went on to win the league cup a couple of years later.

Then he needs to learn that the world wasn't created specially to meet any of our individual wants.  He has chosen this path,  is embarrassing himself and W7 and in the process making public police action designed,  I believe,  to ensure fan safety. Not a spectacular success so far.  On the other hand I love what W7 do when they stick to supporting the team.

The procedure is clear W7 - SLO - Board - Decision - SLO - W7. I would be concerned if the board sidelined the SLO and if I were the SLO and thus happened,  I would resign.

Respect decisions made please.  Keep personal grievances private.

I agree there's  a procedure to be followed.  I was referring to the manner of his Facebook exchange with GS and why he may have reacted in such a way.  His chosen path IMO is only to support his football team and it's  easy to be understanding of police action when you weren't the one who experienced it. Designed to ensure fan safety? Supporting his team surely doesn't warrant an early morning police visit.

It’s clear that only one person will come out on top between a young disgruntled fan and highly respected businessman with years of legally drafted communication experience. Especially on a open social media format such as Facebook.

Maybe Josh is making things worse now, but I’d hope that Gordon would look to reach out privately and sort this matter out.

Well said. Josh isn't a solicitor or the likes. He's an ordinary fan typing in the heat of the moment, feeling angry and in his opinion, let down by the club after a visit from the police.

Hysterics? You love to paint a narrative don’t you?

The banner was literally “fans not criminals”. No one is in hysterics. The point was made in a non confrontational way in the form of a banner. The stewards then waded in as if someone had thrown shit on the park.  (literally running up the stairs to try to grab it off people)

You need to stop posting nonsense

It did look like the stewards were trying to grab a gun off somebody and not a fairly harmless banner.

The club want customers - people who will buy subscriptions to buddievision, members bars, SMISA etc. Which isn’t a bad thing. It’s a business at the end of the day and we all want the club to do well. Many of the group contribute financially to the club.

What the group in W7 represents is the mentality that we are supporters, (we = everyone who wears the black and white) rather than just “customers”. It’s as much our club as it is theirs.

We know that vocal support lifts the team, to underestimate that impact is daft, imo.

Of course there’s got to be rules in place - guidelines - apart from the Morton display which was on the edge - we’ve never really crossed the line.

The SLO does a decent job on social media and prior to the “fans not criminals” banner, confirmed that there shouldn’t be a problem with it. Someone at the club disagreed but they know as well as us that it did not break the rules of the club policy. It’s being difficult for the sake of being difficult.

Our club model should be promoting supporters rather than customers, at every opportunity they want to show who’s in charge and remind us that we’re only customers. By saying no to banners, it’s meant to “keep us in check”. Hence the issue with the Jack Ross banner being taken off us last season. That attitude is what is ruining the relationship between W7 and the club. They’ll say no to something without even consulting the SLO, which is literally meant to be their job.

Truth is that some people at the club love it, others would rather it was back to being an easily controllable morgue.

My (biased) view is that an improving atmosphere is only good for the club - they can and do use our stuff to market the clubs brand. Some of the decisions they make to “control us” are bonkers.

I'm right behind what those in W7 bring to the atmosphere these days. It's been transformed greatly. Long may it continue. Providing you stay within boundaries i don't see why the club can see a negative in the support you provide. It would be a massive own goal for the club to spoil what you have there. The better atmosphere surely attracts more to the games.  I would just be interested to know the thoughts of those running the club on the current relationship you have with them.

  12. Any chance of asking the club about their opinions of what goes on in W7? Isn't there some supporters liaison thing these days? Hopefully they can be made aware of a suspicion that someone at the club maybe wants them dispersed. A rightly suspicious feeling by the sound of it.

Edit to say the post 2 above more or less said the same but did so as i must have been one finger typing. Old git that i am.

  13. This is more of a post connected with saints photos but was watching something i recorded from weeks ago. It was called 'Stuck On You' and was the story of the Panini sticker albums. Was a good watch. Someone on there was saying how they almost filled an album but not quite. He held it up for the camera and the only missing sticker was the saints crest from a late seventies/early eighties team? Did notice Jim Clunie was manager at the time but haven't been arsed to look it up. Ironic really as my 1st ever knowledge of St Mirren was as that team in black and white on the very back page of my albums. Always stood out to me. Used to cut out the crests from NUFC and saints stickers and stick them on light switches as a lad.

Still in touch with a few Bradford fans who travelled up for that game. Clearly weren't too offended, one of the lads actually travelled up to watch us play QOTS. Had him singing Saints songs in the Spread Eagle

To be fair, it was only a handful of youngsters that day. They just happened to be sat in the row behind us so a bit too close for comfort.  The funny thing is i'm probably friendly on a one to one, personal level with the lads who were singing on Saturday. As has been said, it probably wasn't too venomous and just a means of winding the mackems up or a reaction to their songs.

Going to the match today I passed quite a number of Sunderland fans and exchanged a lot of good will which was returned in kind.  A good atmosphere I thought given the long journey those fans made to support their team and visit our ground.  As much as I like banter between fans, when I heard the cry of, 'If you hate the f**king English...' I thought it was totally out of order.

If we decry the OF for their bigotry and hateful chants, then that was no better.

Been coming up for 35 years and have generally been  made to feel welcome and that I'm  amongst friends but pleased I wasn't  among the crowd today.  Did have to suffer the same anti English chant when we played Bradford a few seasons back and have to admit to wondering 'why bother' at the time. Geographically I'm English but don't  share the patriotism of those further South. I reckon I probably get as annoyed by some of the English fans and media as some Scots. History plays a big part of course and shouldn't  take such chants personally but sometimes  easier said than done.

  16. Just watched the recording of the game after avoiding hearing the score at work. Really enjoyable  for a 0-0. Lots  to be positive about on that showing. Thought Coulson and King looked promising. All that was lacking was the finishing but early days. Very encouraging. Doesn't  seem right playing competitive games mid July but tonight got me looking forward to the new season.
