  1. I'd much rather sign 2 quality players than adopt County's scattergun approach, signing a number of poor quality signings. All that leads to is a big squad but a lack of continuity. Their new signing has a better pedigree than some they have signed, but I believe he is another on a very short term contract, which cant do much for team spirit.

So far we've signed only one quality (?) player - Arquin - surplus to requirements at Ross County!

  2. The sugar daddy model can work, or it can be Brookes Mileson. Yes, a genuine St Mirren supporting 'Tom Farmer' or suchlike would be nice, but they simply don't exist. If they did, they'd have appeared in 1998, or certainly over the past five years.

It seems we have been resigned to our fate for a while and are now about to be relegated.

  3. That's a strange statement to make, explain why please.

Also, if you do not know already,County's benefactor Roy McGregor (Proper Multi Millionare) bails them out every Window with money for Players.

Caley also have good backers behind them, they had six Businessmen pump money into the Club last year .They also have Alan Savage of Orion Recruitment......also loaded.

Until some Sugar Daddies pop out the woodwork for us it will be diificult to compete against these two with their rich backers.

Accept what you are saying but with our vastly superior population base, we have under-achieved as a club.

You have got to ask the question why can't we attract a 'Sugar Daddy' of our own?

And I think I can answer my own question - Paisley is too full of old firm bigots - people who have been born and brought up in Paisley (probably over several generations) but the last thing they would consider is to go down to Greenhill Road and support their local team.

On a purely population base we are probably the most under-achieving team in Scotland.

A St Mirren-supporting 'Sugar Daddy' would be much preferable to what we are about to be subjected to!

  4. Or perhaps they're signing shite! Didn't we just beat them 2-1 with ten men. I'm confused, I thought winning almost guaranteed that you were competing.

Yes you are confused. My point which has apparently escaped you is that a Dingwall club (with less than a 12th of the population base of Paisley) can apparently garnish more financial resources.

However, it remains to be seen how successful their purchases will be.

  5. Ross County have just completed their 4th purchase during the January transfer window.

They seem to want to stay in the SPFL more than we do.

Or perhaps they are just a much wealthier club with a larger fan base!

It's a sad day when the club from Paisley (population 74,170) can't compete with the club from Dingwall (population 5,491).

  6. 3-5-2 anyone? Would prefer to see Jason further up the park as feel he offers more attacking than defensively.

That said my mate and I have said Jason would do a better job up front than most and would give an option if we are chasing a game which seems to be most weeks. He seems to have a goal scorers instinct in comparison to some of the players played further forward.

I suggested a few months ago that we could do worse than stick Naismith up front. I agree that he offers more to the team going forward than defensively. In fact he reminds me a bit of Alan Hutton who has always been the defensive weak link in any team I have seen him play for. However, Hutton is more of a provider whereas Naismith is a genuine goal threat in his own right.

The only problem is we apparently don't have another right full back.

  7. Do we still have a scouting system in place?????????

Oh for the days of Jacky Gilmour (the present chairman's uncle) when we had a scouting regime that was the envy of many wealthier clubs.

Surely there is a decent centre half or full back in the lower leagues or even in junior football that could shore up our porous defence?????? (Remember that we signed Frank McAvennie from Johnstone Burgh all these years ago.)

If we can't afford to sign anyone, could we not bring in a specialist defensive coach - someone who could coach the existing players - perhaps an ex player with that kind of background?????????? Hopefully that would not cost an arm and leg.

  8. You could have corrected that about 5 posts ago and saved the forum members from our drivel.whistling.gif

    More trusting? Nope.

    More positive? Possibly.

I prefer to wait and see what the Argentines, if indeed they do take over the club, have to say before making my mind whether to write them off or not.

Chill out mate - we support the same team but obviously disagree about the merits of this takeover bid even although neither of us know anything about it (like everyone else on here).

I think it's a case of a glass half empty or half full, until such time as more of the details are known.

My problem is by that time it will be too late.

  9. I've read it.

You quite clearly state , in an earlier post, that they haven't " sought to involve anyone with a detailed knowledge of players, teams, tactics and dealings in the transfer market" despite having no knowledge of their plans.

That's a fairly definite statement to make, just because the Argentines haven't blabbed the details of their plans to the to the media.

Then you go on to say:

    Really?

I don't remember the other consortium (or any other interested parties for that matter) doing this before or during negotiations. So why should the Argentine consortium be any different?

I'm certainly not convinced that it would be in either parties interest to interrupt negotiations to start informing fans of the details of any proposed set up.

It's called reality, as opposed what you want to hear.

If the deal happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

I've got some trepidation about any deal, but I'm a bit excited at the same time.

What I meant to say was:- "However, there has been no indication from Pini & Co that they know anything about the Scottish game and set up, nor that they have sought to involve anyone with a detailed knowledge of players, teams, tactics and dealings in the transfer market."

In the absence of information from either party it is natural to form assumptions and opinions in a discussion forum like this. I did not mean to mislead anyone.

You obviously seem to be more trusting and positive about this prospective takeover than me.

  10. You seem well informed, given that we've heard nothing of the Argentine group's intentions.

As you know, I like everyone else, am not well informed.

The absence of information from either party, leaves us all making uninformed assumptions based on reasonable logic.

If any link-ups with Scottish coaches/players had been mooted by the prospective purchasers, it would have been in both parties' interests to let the fans know, without revealing the details/identities in advance.

As div has pointed out, we will not know what has been proposed until a deal has been concluded and by then it will be too late.

Surely the selling consortium should have been trying to reassure the fans that, even at this late stage, they are endeavoring to secure all the necessary safeguards for the future well-being of the club.

That reassurance would necessarily include a general indication that the prospective purchasers are not going into this blind - ie. without any input from anyone with a good knowledge of the Scottish game.

As a lifetime fan, I shall be awaiting such an assurance with bated breath!

  11. Only because their bid was knocked back and they spat the dummy.

Nobody had an inkling of their plans, whilst they were negotiating with our board. They were convinced the deal was about to go through. Did they share their plans with us at that point?

No one expects the fans to be consulted prior to a deal being struck but they would assume the selling consortium to have quizzed the potential buyers as to their intentions, business plan and personnel (with a knowledge of the Scottish game) to be appointed to take things forward.

That to me seems both reasonable and feasible. However, there has been no indication from Pino & Co that they know anything about the Scottish game and set up, nor have they sought to involve anyone with a detailed knowledge of players, teams, tactics and dealings in the transfer market. The lack of information and reassurance from the selling consortium would lead the fans to fear a 'Vladimir Romanov-type' experience, which you will recall almost resulted in the demise of Heart of Midlothian.

  12. Think that was always going to be the case when the club is sold to private investors mate.

We have long established that only Gordon Scott and Ken McGeoch were the only two St.Mirren fans with the appetite and the finance to even think about funding the purchase of the club, and both failed at different stages with their proposed bids.

The supporters were the only other viable option and that bid also failed.

That left us inevitably being sold to an outside investment group, and you are never going to get the detail behind any such bid until it's completed unfortunately.

The problem with this particular takeover bid is that we know very little other than what we can scour on the internet (and that does not make for happy reading). The fact that it comes from another continent does not help the information process but at least if the bid had come from Scottish or UK businessmen we would have been better placed beforehand to make an informed assessment of the bid.

This is a risk that is not worth taking unless more supportive evidence comes to light on the merits of the takeover bid.

  13. Only saw the brief highlights on Sportscene but ............. Another thing standing out was the Saints centre half, he is absolutely useless ! Must get rid of him at once and sign another.

I assume you are talking about Cheesy.

According to most people who were actually at the match, Cheesy had an excellent game.

One of the highlights at Dingwall for me and a lot of Saints fans was the look of sheer ecstasy on Cheesy's face at the end of the match. He is a buddie through and through and while he has made a few individual errors this season (as have a number of other players) this has been a year when collectively we have not enjoyed the rub of the green.
