We had a player once like that, one Davie Lapsley!

Aw the older folk would know what he played like

Going back a wee bit Scabby - but you are right, albeit I think my memories of him are only what was written as he retired right after the 59 Cup Final and according to Wikipedia only making one more appearance after that. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lapsley) Wasn't DL a full back and centre forward tho'?

I'd add Willie Renton into that mix - another gifted half back who I think played alongside a young Gordon McQueen and helped him learn his trade at Love St.

  2. I completely agree with Drew, the loan deals should be looked on as icing on the cake - however it appears the BoD / management think we have a good nucleus of a team already and if we don't do any more business then, we have a squad that will see us through the season.

Now I completely understand SG's stance that he doesn't want to run a ship that runs into debt, I also understand that they want to make ends meet, but as many have said, both Inverness and Ross County run basically the same model and they are well ahead of us in terms of players brought in and a settled line-up that appear competitive.

There are enough dissenting voices in the supporters arena that share the doubt that we are going to struggle this year (again) unless we bring in two or three new faces (that aren't just panic buys)!

    Knocker-wetting?

Is this some kind of wet T-shirt affair?

If so, I no longer wish to be considered as a member of the happy-clapper gang.

Knocker-wetting it is, for me, all the way!

o instead of i before c - well known rule in English - but on the other hand maybe knocker wetting would be an enjoyable half-time respite for the West Stand. thumbup2.gif

  4. I feel like a stuck record!

For the past year and a half I've been saying we need better quality in the Centre Back position - preferably a change of both rather than one.

    The stats prove the point:

Last year we had the third worst goals against record, the second worst goals difference. The position in the league purely reflected the ability to stop the ball going into our net and a general inability to score goals.

There was a time when Arsenal won practically every game 1-0 - yes they had a limited ambition up front - but boy could they defend.

Start with the basics of stopping goals and confidence flows through the rest of the team and takes pressure off the defence so that you can build more in the midfield and attack.

    The players we have are>

Goodwin - Being played out of position - not that quick and prone to end up in the eye of the referee too often

McAusland - Sorry prone to some really basic errors at this level - has some reasonable games and then some think he's great, but I would be prepared to gamble that he wouldn't get in another SPFL team.

McGregor - Looked a fine prospect a couple of years ago, but serious injury (and I mean serious if you are a pro footballer), has left him without games, probably less confident than he was two years ago and basically untested at the top level.

Mair - Apparently the club, or management don't really want him around. - Not quite sure why as he isn't THAT much worse than any two of the above and would at least be back-up in the event of injury / suspension - that being said he has deficiencies which he can't shake off.

Naismith - completely untested in the top league and may just be too young to step up.

Ok analyse that lot if you will and convince me that we have any combination out of these 5 that stand out as a (Scottish) top flight CB partnership that can stop us leaking goals.

We need a player that can read the game, not attract the attentions of the referee every time he walks onto the park, can instil confidence in those around him and cut down on basic errors. There's bound to be one or two out there who are better than what we have!

Problem is that whatever the fans think - the club and management obviously think differently and don't seem to have the appetite to change things in the CB position. It could ultimately lead to the slide of the club back into the second tier - and that's not knocker-wetting (as many would call it) - it's reality and if you leak goals due to lack of confidence at the back - it leads to a malaise throughout the team.

    I am concerned.sad.png

  5. Oaksoft, like it or not Saints0, made a point which I think has been aired a few times on this forum, namely:

DL has basically been told there is little or no money available to buy in new players so we have ditched a few to release some wages and we have picked up a couple of reasonable-looking players so far. At this stage, we are looking at a very thin squad.

Other than that he is going to rely on the youngsters coming through and that is fact - whether they are good enough overall is going to be the question - yes McGinn looks the part, but so did Kenny McLean. Reilly looks reasonable, but is young and if he is being thought of a striking partner to ST, give me Concalves every day.

I agree with Pozbaird's overall post - things are relatively healthy in terms of how the club is run - whether we have the quality of players capable of stepping up from underage football to the rigours of the Scottish Premier League is questionable and if DL is depending on that, as this and future season's approach, then we are in for some really bumpy rides.

  6. Obviously we can't expect the SPL to contain French and German internationalists but why is Scotland not producing a crop even close this standard

Oaksoft, I'd go a step further and say why can we as a nation not produce any truly international level players?

I think maybe the last player we produced that might get into a European starting 11 would be Souness, since then I can't for the life of me think of any really good Scottish internationalists.

In previous times we had many - Dalglish, Bremner, Law, loads of Celtic players, White of Tottenham, even Archie Gemmel, you could go on and on - so what's happened that we can't produce any in the past 10 years or so?

  7. There was a time when clubs built their team around a strong number 1, no. 5 and no. 9. Build down the middle and create the artistry around a core of the team.

Last year we had a reasonable no. 1 - he made a few errors, but he also made a lot of saves that many would have conceded to become goals against - in overall terms a good goalie.

We had a great front line leader in ST, - glad he stayed fit and yes he is 30 something, but as long as he manages to stay fit he is a great asset as a target man - also an enthusiast for the side and must be great around the dressing room. Having a back up is probably worth it as the odds are against him having another year without a difficult injury.

HOWEVER - I said it time and time again last season we lack a commanding traditional Centre Half. We have a player in McAusland who blows a bit hot and cold, but in overall terms not the commanding player we need.

Goodwin is a stand in and also attracts the attention of the officials far too much.

McGregor - as much as we want him to be that CH, is completely untested at this level over a prolonged period.

As for the alternatives, Mair (who has been told he could go) is ok but prone to mistakes and Barron who had a bit of an in and out season last year, some good games and some howlers.

If I could have an early Christmas present it would be the managerial department getting their act together and realising that the goals against column last year was as much to do about indecisiveness and uncertainty in the middle that any other reason and they actively go out and find a good Central Defender.

If they could do that, I would have some optimism about the coming season, without that CH, - I hae ma doubts! cloud9.gif

  8. For once in the speculation thread we can actually venture a guess (not throw wild rumours) at who the two keepers are that the club are on the point of signing.

My 1st speculation will be Neil Alexander of you know who.

My 2nd guess would be a keeper who is younger who can then cover in the under20's team, maybe from a lower league?

I don't think the club will take a punt at Craig Gordon, albeit if he was fit and could stay fit he would be a fantastic player to have in our side. thumbup2.gif

I have seen rumours of Cornell and a French 19 year old coming as our keepers, however I'll stick with the outside bet of Alexander.

  9. Statistics, statistics and damned lies............................................

Parkin has been a waste of space and salary - sorry Sam, not good enough throughout the whole season and your level will be somewhere about English 2nd or no-league status.

Moving onto the stats - yes Carey has scored very few goals but he is a dead-ball threat. He's one of these players who I think will benefit from a long run in the position that suits him best, but at Saints he never really found that position, or got a long run. Dummet returning after New Year scuppered Carey getting an extended run at left back, where to be honest I thought he had two or three not bad games.Maybe he did upset the management or didn't quite fit the 'company' style, and if that's the case then sorry he has to go.

I've got faith in the management, we have extolled the playing style over the past couple of years, however if you look at the team in the cold light of day there are only maybe four or five you might really, really want to keep. The stats don't lie, 11th in the league tell us that we are lacking quality in a number of areas, including the defence where our goals against collumn is pretty poor.

I've said it before we need fresh blood and talent and less journeymen such as Guy, Parkin, Barron, DVZ, Mair and if we are to get loanees then please can they be consistent enough to merit a place, not be given a starting spot every week just because the team loaning them to us insist that they play if they are fit!

    Keep the faith clover.gif

  10. Cos of this post of yours I had a sleepless night, I have amended my post above to point out that you're NOT a liar.

I was erroneously quite wrong in my assumption. My logic was flawed.

Previously I'd enjoyed reading your posts and recognised you as a mature, sensible and interesting poster with a worthwhile perspective on most matters.

So I stupidly believed that for you to suggest that there is no place in football for free speech, despite the evidence presented by all the other posters about there being political slogans around the park at GHR (you'll have read all them too, of course) and despite the photos of organised political protests by Celtic supporters, had to be attributed to you not having read or understood that evidence.

Either you'd not read them or you were nowhere near as mature, sensible and intelligent as I had believed

Obviously my earlier judgement was flawed and so I apologise again.
    You're certainly NOT a liar.

Bluto, I am flattered by your praise even if it was tinged with a touch of satire!

It is not lost on me that I should raise a matter of libel in a thread that relates to ‘Free Speech’, however you will be well aware that there is a strong and very clear difference between free speech and words directed at an individual without any basis of fact.

The only two venues where I think you could get away with calling me a ‘liar’ would be in a court of law and the Houses of Parliament, however if you decide to attack someone (or libel them) without due cause outside of these locations you open up yourself up to the possible consequences. In both cases the words would be spoken as opposed to written and not put in print other than in Hansard.

    Your apology is accepted.

  11. Bluto, I don't come on here to 'wind people up' however I do take exception to being called a liar.

    "Defences against defamation

: The first is justification (or truth). If the defendant can show that what he wrote is true, he has a complete defence. This is not always easy. You cannot, for example, call someone a liar if you can quote only one falsehood to substantiate your claim. The plaintiff could probably win a libel action unless you showed that he was a habitual liar."

Be careful who and why you call someone a liar especially in print - it could come back to haunt you.

  12. Bluto, I take exception to being called a "liar".

I read every page, including the Hammas diatribe. Yes political rantings are made at football grounds, but time and time again I've read on this very site that St Mirren fans should rise above the political machinations of other clubs and try not to get dragged into their neanderthal rantings.

You were happy to criticise and wrongly call me a liar, however you failed to answer "why did he choose to shout it at all at a match involving St Mirren"?

  13. Oaksoft: "Aye come on here and tell people what they can and can't freely discuss - on a public forum designed to let people talk.

There's a growing number of you who do that."

My point was: sorry what he said had no place at a St Mirren football match. Like it or not he was making a political comment which he wouldn't have done if it was an under 20's match between St Mirren and Queen of the South (e.g).

He chose to push his beliefs aimed at specific players that play for Celtic. Sorry I don't think that has a place at St Mirren Park.

That's my point and 11 pages of debate, including some biased opinion on Hammas propoganda (or alternatively pro-Israeli) for example, has nothing to do with St Mirren.

I'm not taking sides, there are plenty of alternative sites to push your political opnion and to argue out your cause, but tell me this, why did he choose to shout it at all at a match involving St Mirren. I'm stumped for a sensible answer!

Hence I pose the point, it has no place at St Mirren park and if you decide to shout something of that nature, then take the consequences that come your way.

  14. Waded my way through 11 pages of this crap.......................................... sorry what he said had no place at a St Mirren football match. thumbdown.gif

If he wants to espouse his political beliefs he has every right to do so, but push them somewhere else, like County Square, and then see what reaction he gets from passers-by, police or alternative thinkers to his cause, so be it.

Please close the subject - almost a non-buddies post, or place it in general nonsense.bye1.gif

  15. Irony doesn't go down well in the east end of Glasgow!

I felt a modicum of sympathy for their inability to at least get the ref to recognise that there was something illegal going on at EVERY corner kick, but hey that what the rest of us have to put up with at Parkhead every game and we don't get the penalties given to us ................ so Celtic, grow up and smell the coffee, the powers that be want Juventus in the next round of their so called 'Champions' League come hell or high water bangin.gif

  16. Good post from Perth Buddy, my exact sentiments.

I'm not anywhere on the list of those calling for action on Gus or his management team, however whilst he has one thing clearly established and that is a solid defensive approach, the problem is that the next part of the process seems to be missing.

Creative midfield, crossing wingers / wing backs and a couple of players who can put the ball in the net. I'm not talking about someone who needs to be flashy, tricky or skillful, but someone who knows how to stick the ball in the goal when offered the chance.

Think back to some good times, Doug Somner, Frank McDougall, Eddie Gallagher, even Mark Yardley, not particularly skillful but capable of finding the net when offered the chance. In saying this, some of these strikers had good crossers of the ball on the park and maybe that is where we should concentrate our efforts on the basis that the more you get into the box, the more Kean and however plays with him will get a chance to show their skills.

  17. I'm with you CS :o , even to the most obvious eye, unless there is a transformation, there is not a lot of chance that we will be challenging for top spot this year.

I'm sick of the pass back approach, the total lack of creativity in midfield, and as for a finisher, I haven't seen a true regular, fit goal scorer at Love St for maybe 6+years.

What's all this crap about needing a 6'2" + partner for Kean. When Celtic were at their peak in the 60'6 and early 70's they had Lennox, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld, Hood, McBride, Deans etc etc and none of them were anywhere above 5'9". What you need is someone who knows his way to goal, pure and simple - height isn't necessarily the answer, all it encourages (as was evidenced with Mixu in the team) is the reliance on the long ball, in the hope you got a knock down. Any team with a big defence could mop up these long balls as Falkirk did last year.

Now get a winger / wing-back to the by-line and cross a ball properly into the box at any height and it causes mayhem.

I'm getting to the stage when it is difficult to encourage my son to come to Love St, if for no other reason, he doesn't want to see negative tactics or for that matter, an ineffectual display against teams who have no aspirations to get to the SPL.

  18. :o

What about just - The Doors

    1) Light My Fire

    2) Roadhouse Blues

    3) Ship of Fools

    4) Riders on the Storm

    5) Crawling King Snake

and just to finish off you can always have "The End"

Morrison may have been perpetually stoned, but boy did he hate his father enough to write just wonderful music!

    :D
