56 Oakshaw was never a nursing home. In fact, it was a nurses' home where district nurses who were not locally based lived. It later became student accommodation and, now, flats.
I am aware of that and this was discussed when that building was originally featured (image 55). However it is called the Peter Brough District Nursing Home.
-
I didn't think it was HSS. I was just trying to provide another clue by discounting all the clocks mentioned in the interesting thread you referred to . Noticed no-one did provide a full list!
-
PICTURE 55 featured the Peter Brough Nursing Home in Oakshaw. Originally the Broughs had an estate in Oakshaw where the Nursing Home now stands. Peter Brough was a great Paisley philanthropist and contributed with the Coats family to the building of the original paisley tech in George St and the Brough Hall in the new building is named after him. That still leaves the question - where is the Margaret Brough Memorial Hall?
-
Good link HSS but the clock featured as PIC 118 has been around for a long time and is not mentioned on the interesting thread you posted a link to. But Bluto knows where it is

Earlier there was a question about whether the architect of the Thomas Muir Memorial Hall and the Orr Square Church (originally the Free High Church) were the same. I can find no reference as to the architect of the Orr Square church and the history of the Oakshaw Trinity list the architect of Orr Square as 'unknown'.
Charles Davidson, the architect of the TM Hall didnt start his practise in Paisley until 1880 so didn't design the original Orr Sq Church. However CD did design the Margaret Brough Memorial Hall in 1888 which is linked to the Orr Square Church. The question is - where is the MB Memorial Hall? I do not think that is a part of the main building we recognise as the Orr Sq Church. The Orr Sq Church had a Mission Hall at the bottom of Storie St. Is this the same building as the MB Memorial Hall?
I am struggling to see any tangible connection between the Renfrew North Church and the Orr Sq Church and their relationship with the Thomas Muir Memorial Hall except possibly the MB Memorial Hall but where is it?

PICTURE 117 has been identified as 'the Thomas Muir Memorial Hall in North St. Built in 1905 as a mission hall for St John's Church. Gifted to the church by Mr. John Muir and Mr. Roger Muir in memory of their brother Thomas all of whom were Elders in that church. Sold by the church in 1975. '
I do not know what the building is currently used for. There is also some uncertainty about which Church the Hall belonged to. The above source states St John's Church which is in School Wynd a wee distance away from North St. The same source in another article (Scottish Church Heritage Research) stated the Hall belonged to the North Church which was now demolished but I haven't found out any more about a North Church or its location.
I found an interesting article about a BB Company being based there from the Oakshaw Trinity http://oakshawtrinity.org/for-children-2/14th-paisley-boys-brigade/history/part-1-1900-1940.html (that makes 3 Churches now connected to the TM Hall) . This is an excerpt ...
'On 21st January 1901 a full dress parade was held and the Company was
officially sworn in. The members of the Church were thanked for their
assistance in equipping this well fitted-out unit with uniforms and rifles.'I was in the BB for many years and I am sure I was never issued with a rifle .

I went for a paddle in my kayak across to Cumbrae yesterday - wish I had done it on Saturday instead
And well behaved dogs are a great source of enjoyment. I used to have two Border Collies (Sonny - on the left), and Bess) who could walk to heel down Byres Rd without getting involved with anyone or anything. They went everywhere with me and many said they would prefer me to visit with the dogs than have some relatives' kids visit. Collies really are exceptional dogs - incredibly obedient and easily trained.

It belongs to a Church which has been demolished. Quite near our old home

Ding, ding. Round 2. Try again.

PICTURE 116 is the Four Square Tobacco factory at the bottom of Greenhill Rd. Built 1930. B Listed. Architect James Steel Maitland. Described at 'Early industrial modernism on urban site.'
More recently referred to as Carlton Die Castings but has apparently other uses - Gym? Good looking building that would benefit from a coat of paint -

Think you will have to buy a case at this rate

Well done HSS. Picture 115 is 'Crosbie' situated off Balgonie Ave. A Listed nonetheless!
Built in 1901 with the Architect being TG. He designed it for his sister and brother-in-law George V Boyd. Boyd may have been a banker but I am unable to confirm this.
It being a private home with a long driveway I had to take the shot from the gate but it looks a great building. The more I come across TG's work the more impressed I am by his greatness and his contribution to Paisley. I think a wee statue is called for. Maybe I'll write a book about him
-
We haven't had Dykebar yet. Dont think I was suggesting a hospital or jail.
Although maybe a bit different from his normal red sandstone it was designed by the great TG himslef. As I said, a tricky one.....

Is that your version of Bluto's cryptic style clue Sonny?
Forget about the tree Eddy - its not important. And I leave the cryptic clues to Bluto.
-
could you no move that tree oot the way so we could see it better?
The tree is a clue - the building is near a tree
-
If thats a clue Bluto its too cryptic for me and I know what the builing is! You will have to explain later. Just when I thought I was understanding your clues as well......

Yankie mags was on Walker street?
Yes Insaintee. I loved going up to Walker St on a Saturday morning. My mother would start her shopping going up the right side of Well St (from the bottom) with the Co-op on Broomlands usually the furthest point on the shopping trip. We came down the right side which had most of the shops we went to. If I was lucky I could persuade her to visit Yankee Mags for a few minutes (after all I was carrying the said shopping bags). Mostly we didnt have any money to buy comics but I would check out what there was so that when a few pence came along I had an idea what to buy. Loved that place.
And unless Leverndale has moved to Paisley then it would not be considered

PICTURE 114 is the West School (or now the West Primary School) in Maxwellton St. Built in 1938 and to my mild surprise is not Listed (thought it would be a C). Has a nice art deco-ish exterior. I am sure there must be plenty of stories about this place.
A nice wee reminisce of growing up in the West End here ....http://www.paisley.org.uk/paisley-people/buddies-tale/ although I spotted one error in it. Anyone else spot it?

I don't think there's much in this so I won't bother starting a new thread, but a Dundee Utd fan on twitter seems to think that we were on talks with them over Jim Goodwin, and we would get their youngster Ryan Gauld as part of the deal.
He reckons with Houston gone its been shelved but I can't see there being any truth in it in the first place given we're short on defenders and he's filling that role, he just turned down an offer from Hibs and we have no need for a promising midfielder if we have McGinn and McLean at least until June, don't suppose anyone else has heard anything similar?
I dont think there is a hope in hell of this happening. He is under contract and we need him and DUFC have no money to buy him and we have some great young players coming through. Wishful thinking on their part.

The commentator during the match said that Thompson and Teale are Saints fans. Well , big Stevie's alliegance is well documented but I didn't know about Gary . His radio interview would cetainly seem to confirm it. .
Gary is an Ayr United man I believe and still stays in Ayr. He just loves black & white

PICTURE 118 is the Kelburne Pavilion at Whitehaugh Oval.
The sports grounds were opened there in 1889 but I don't know if the Pavilion dates to that year. The Cricket Club website has hee-haw about its History. The Hockey Club has a lot more information that can be found here......
http://hockey.kelburne.com/history
I remember spending a delightful day there many years ago. A friend was a member of Ferguslie and at his request a few us went to Kelburne for some sort of sports day involving cricket I think The day is a bit of a blur of cheap black & tans and fair maidens. A wee happy memory of Whitehaugh.
