  1. While I dont want to burst anyone's bubble about Doris remember that Wardlaw had an excellent scoring rate before signing and wasnt good enough for the SPL. Same goes for John Baird going to Dundee. The guy may be good but he is also 24 the same age as Robertson who was player of the year in the Second Division but the jury is still out on his ability for the SPL.

Personally I would prefer an 18yo starting out with a great scoring record in the lower leagues or an old pro who we know can score at SPL level (eg Kenny Miller) than someone who has played in the lower leagues for virtually all of their career. If Dorris signs I will support him and maybe he will change my thinking but I certainly dont see him in particular as a great signing.

  2. Sorry guys. Haven't forgotten about you - just been busy. HSS has offered you something in the meantime :) . This is a guess - out towards Glasgow?

PICTURE 113 is the Wallneuk Church. B Listed. Built 1912-1915 and designed by the great TG himself.

From their website at ... http://www.wallneuknorthchurch.org.uk/

'In April 1913, the then Synod of Glasgow of the United Free Church of Scotland elected Wallneuk into a charge, thus was created the last United Free Church in the town of Paisley.

The congregation dates from 1913 although the roots are much older. Before 1913 there were local men and women in the immediate area who met regularly for prayer and meditation on the Word of God.

The name Wallneuk is woven into local history as according to tradition the land on which the church is built was the neuk (corner) of the garden of Abbot of Paisley.

The halls were completed and opened in May 1912 while the main church building was completed during the First World War being opened in the autumn of 1915.'

  3. From OS ....

St Mirren manager, Danny Lennon has 19-year-old Legia Warsaw striker Patryk Mikita in on trial this week with a view to signing the player on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Danny said, “We have been offered Patryk on loan until the end of the season and we have been advised that he is capable of playing in the SPL.

“We will run the rule over him this week and make a final decision at the end of the week.”

  4. McGinn has been more consistent than McLean this season. He has faded a bit recently which is to be expected from a youngster but Kenny was posted missing for months this season with no excuses. Kenny has shown some of his undoubted talent recently and that is the only problem I have with McLean - too many games where he is invisible.

  5. PICTURE 112 is Paisley Library. I think HSS wins the clue this time smile.png . A Listed (the Library not HSS). Built in 1871. Peter Coats put up the money and John Honeyman was the architect. Some more info here ... http://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/webcontent/home/services/leisure+and+culture/heritage+and+local+history/els-jh-centrallibraryhistory?history

The Library initially proved so popular it was extended a couple of times with TG involved in work in 1913. James Coats paid for the first major extension in 1902. If I remember right this was either the first or one of the first Public Libraries in the UK.

Edited to add: I was so disappointed when I was in on Doors Open Day that the upstairs was no longer open to the public. That used to be the Children's Library and I spent many a time browsing around it as a boy.

  6. Just been watching a programme on bbc 4 about Rosslyn Chapel and it mentions a plaque in Melrose Abbey which details a French architect/stone mason's work. He was responsible for the design change from older style geometric windows to the fancier French Gothic arched window seen in our Abbey. It mentions he was also responsible for work in Paisley and the High Kirk in Glasgow. Seems silly not to have noticed the similarities before, granted Melrose is on a much grander scale - but the style is similar, and they both have a pig gargoyle!

Eddy, I visited Melrose in Oct there and thought I had taken a shot of that plaque but seems like I didn't. However I did get the flying pig! Melrose Abbey is definitely worth a visit and is in a lovely part of the country. It must have been an outstanding building in its heyday.
