  1. It was for the love of the game mate and by early this century I'd had enough. Still managed to be voted onto the SAFA Committee , the WoSFA Committee and the Greater Glasgow Committee. It's not all about the seniors pal , although we did play St Mirren in the early 90s and lost 4-2 to a Basher hat-trick !

So anyway, now I've given you an opportunity to breeze down memory lane and dust down your trophies let's get back to the point of my post. I said "brave" and you said "my arse" indicating you'd have made those "obvious" changes after the ICT game.

So just for the sake of clarity, after one game you'd have dropped Cornell, Grainger and Teale, brought in Kelly and Mair and moved Goodwin back into midfield?

If the answer to all that is yes then I suggest getting yourself an agent, refreshing that CV and sewing all your old committee badges back onto your SFA blazer. Somebody is bound to call soon!

  2. 18 years mate at a decent level ? Had all the available badges at the time , roomed with Archie Knox at Largs , won countless trophies , including winning two Hampden finals , also managed the League Select winning the Baxter trophy . Lost several players to junior football and sent 5 players to the seniors. I wouldn't have mentioned any of this had you not asked.

How'd that promising career pan out?

  3. 2 of the changes were forced on him.

Only decision he made was moving Goodwin into midfield. Hardly brave moving a midfielder back into midfield but it has paid off.

Did he not drop Teale for the Aberdeen game too? Surely a brave decision considering Teale has been one of our better performers for some time? The knives would really have been out for him if that had backfired.

What about young Kelly? Are you trying to tell me that he was the natural choice with all the fans to step in after Grainger's dismissal at Easter Road?

In addition to that moving Goodwin back to midfield was a brave gamble but that was only part of it. Mair and McGregor together in the middle? When I heard that pre game it didn't fill me with much hope tbh.

Look, I'm not Lennon's biggest fan, never have been, but people can't give him all the flack that's going when the team is playing shite and put down a turnaround in fortunes down to the players, fate or pure luck. That's simply not fair.

  4. This thread is complete nonsense. Lennon made some brave decisions against Aberdeen and we got a good performance which has been the springboard for back to back victories and we still get pish like this on the board.

Honestly, I wonder if sometimes people will only be happy if we're "baw deep" in controversy and will look to instigate it if there's none.

    Give it a rest FFS.

  5. Newton was deployed at right mid on Monday to give some protection to Vanzy, who was up against a very quick Aberdeen player. It worked,a so well done to Lennon on that one.

I think Hearts will present a similar challenge on Saturday and if Lennon has the urge to throw Teale into the fold at Newton's expense then I fear we'll be enduring anther torrid 90 mins.

Exact same team and shape for me. Give Hearts nothing early on and take the big crowd out of it and then hit on the break and wait for our chance to come. It's not pretty but it is necessary for the situation we're in. If we go at Hearts we'll lose the match and Lennon will likely lose his job.

I'd take 0-0 right now and move onto the international break where we have another two weeks to work on the training ground and get Bahoken acclimated to the pace of the Scottish game.

  6. That should be the only change for Saturday...Teale in for 1 of Newton, McLean or McGinn.

However we had to be hard to beat tonight, that was an Aberdeen team on a roll. They hadn't conceded in 5 games or something.

Why would you change what was effectively our best performance of the season?

Teale is an excellent player but I get the feeling that Conor is there to protect DVZ which isn't Teale's strength tbh.

Exactly the same required for Saturday. Frustrate Hearts, snap at them in the middle and wait for our chance to take the game to them. Make no mistake, this will be a hostile atmosphere on Saturday and Locke (knob that he is) will have his mob ford up for this. Take the sting out of them in the first 20 mins and take the crowd out of it. A draw wouldn't be the worst result and would keep some distance between us and them whilst inching us closer to the teams above us.

  7. Also, we were difficult to beat tonight. Too often I leave our ground feeling that that was the worst xxxx team we've seen down here in a while, frustrated that we've not won. Well, that was as good an Aberdeen side as has visited Paisley in a while and we did well to match them, stifle them and take the game to them at times.

Exactly the same line up, formation and application will do nicely on Saturday. Which means no place for Cheesy, Grainger, Harkins or Teale.

  8. Lee Mair put in a no nonsense performance hoofed the baw up the park when needed. Sadly DVZ and Goodwin both looked as if they were playing from memory with there best days well behind them.

    Wow, just wow!

Goodwin was, IMO and those around me, our best player tonight. Tackled everything, chased Aberdeen back to their own goal on numerous occasions and led the team like a captain should.

Dilo, Kelly, Mair and McGregor also all played solidly and wee McGinn came onto a game in the second half after giving it away cheaply in the first.

As Lennon says, "hopefully a platform to build on".

  9. aww come on, its not all bad, i saw a post a little back 'liked' by an ex-director that basically said that a team like st.mirren should accept relegation from time to time.

Relegation would be a disaster financially, however, the history of the game in this country tells us that, for a team like us, it's almost a certainty at some point. Same for St Johnstone, ICT, Ross County and Thistle. Small teams with small budgets whose number comes up eventually.

  10. A free game are you off your nut? We have no wins this season and 1win in 19 ! In our situation the term free game does not apply. It shows you though that the decay is setting in with folk happy to keep hearts at arms length and forget actually climbing the league. Relegation this year will be catastrophic for us and it will certainly cost jobs in the club. People who we all know will lose employment but hey let's all roll up on Monday for a freebie v Aberdeen.

Not sure if the sarcasm was deliberate or you're maybe not sure what it is so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Re-read my post mate. At no point did I say anything about being happy with the current situation.

Anyway, the "free game" I referred to was in relation to some of the pressure being off tonight which wouldn't have been the case if both Hearts and Killie had won. Surely even you can see that and appreciate it might just have removed a bit of the pressure the players are feeling?

No? Well whatever you think a win tonight will see us leapfrog Killie and open up an 11 point gap between us and Hearts. That would enable us to climb the league AND keep Hearts at arms length and should allow you to sleep better at night.

  11. The Smeltic 4-2 game is up there as one of my favourite games. Packed north bank and coming back from 2-0 down. I am sure someone? Scanlon perhaps, scored from just inside our half into the love street end. I have searched everywhere on line for footage with no joy!!!! Ahhhh memories!!!

Was there not some sort of strike with the TV cameras not being there? Scanlon's goal was magnificent but I'm sure I also remember the Cowboy vaulting the advertising hoardings and getting it right up the 'tic fans in the Caledonia end. Might have been after bagging the equaliser?

  12. 3k is 3k but if anything the club should be paying us back. It just stinks mate...we are in a bad way and really need to move on. The time to reflect on the cup win is in a few years time not later in the same year, in the midst of our worst league start for years and shortly after going out of the cup to lower league opponents

Your missing the part that this was organised by fans for fans. All the club did was let us use the hospitality suite and the players, Lennon and Craig came of their own volition.

A great night was had by all and it has got nothing to do with whatever state we are currently in. What should we do, mope around constantly 'cause we've lost a few games? There will be enough pressure on everyone next Monday, particularly if Hearts and Killie get results at the weekend so having a wee night off was a good thing IMO.

Add to that I'm 44 and have only seen us win 2 national trophies so I might just reflect on 17th March 2013 whenever it suits me if it's all the same to you?

  13. Thanks to everyone who came along this evening, it was a terrific night. Special mention to the players and, in particular, the manager who showed immense class for coming along, sharing his memories and chatting with fans throughout the night.

Hear, hear. Just got back home and thoroughly enjoyed the night. Was really impressed by the camaraderie among the players and passion from Lennon.

He's clearly not getting removed any time soon and, that being the case, will likely be in charge until the next international break after the Hearts game so we move onto Aberdeen on Monday week and hope that things turn around for us.

I found myself wanting to cheer for him whenever he spoke tonight. Not sure why, because I'm as scunnered as the next guy about how we're playing. I guess it`'s because he's our Manager and I want him to succeed. He's hurting at the moment too, that much was evident. I just hope he's got a similar performance in store for us on the park next week because we need it, badly.

  14. To be honest, I wouldnt want Hartley as since he's been coaching, he's been too far of the radar. Eck is a good shout although there are 2 reasons he's unlikely, 1) He's likely to be out of our financial reach and 2) a few elements of the support might be against him as a former bluenose manager. We need someone who can help reverse the terminal decline that we are in

The thing about Big Eck is that he's out of work so unless he's still living down South maybe he'd be interested in the gig.
