  1. Are they? He mentions Ross County, ICT and St Johnstone.

All three of these have spent time in Division One when we were in the SPL.

Since 2005 we have finished above St Johnstone and Ross County almost every year except the last 2 years.

Not sure where your 9 times out of 10 comes from. Fractions not your strong point eh?

On a serious note there can't be many clubs with this number of borderline suicidal fans after one f**king match.

I can only ever remember Rangers fans behaving like this under the same circumstances.

It is actually pretty funny when you take a step back.

If word of this got out we'd be the laughing stock of the entire UK.

Why is it that instead of simply assuming your default position of slagging off anyone who's opinion differs from yours, you take a step back yourself and try to understand the frustration of a lot of fans?

I know there have been some extreme comments re Lennon and his job prospects but those are the minority IMO. There are a lot of concerned fans, myself included, not happy about the general state of the team and our readiness for the season.

I don't expect to win the league, qualify for Europe or even actually make the top six. What I do feel entitled to though is putting a competitive team on the park and the management team addressing some of the obvious deficiencies we have had in our squad for a good long while now.

No knicker wetting, as you like to call it. Just justifiable concern. I'm not sure why, even when you don't agree with that view, you can't understand it.

  2. So for all the whining THAT is the great plan is it?

A guy with a stinking attitude and poor work ethic, a striker who can't score and the Cowdenbeath goalie.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image FFS I thought you guys at least had sensible alternatives in mind.

Ok, so you've done what you generally do. Disregard someone's point of view because its not yours (ie whining instead of offering an opinion) Try to get a laugh at said poster's expense (fail!), add a few wee smilies and avoid the actual question completely.

So, are you saying that you would take Reilly, Brady and Cornell over Imrie, Guy and Adam? Yes or no?

  3. That woeful defence kept us in the top flight, landed us with the top 2 league points tallies we've had in the top flight since Frankie said Relax and landed us a Cup as well. You can't just paper over these things because you want to see a manager out of work.

I'm pretty sure you're doing a bit of "papering" yourself there. The defence is poor and has been shipping soft goals for a while. Most fans see this (opposing ones generally do) and simply want to see a better level of defender in there. Give me a Russell Duncan or Fraser Wright any day at the heart of our defence. Not great players, but very solid defenders.

  4. I think the biggest frustration in all of this for me is he lack of awareness from Danny Lennon and others at the club on the areas we need to improve in our team - for the longer term and not just the odd loan signing to fill a gap. You could say that the signings of Isma and Newton pretty much won us the League Cup last year, but where is the long-term view? Who replaces them when they inevitably leave for bigger and better things?

I'm so fed up of the soft goals we have given away pretty much since the first day Danny Lennon walked into this job. It's been glaringly obvious that it has to change for years now and it hasn't. In fact, if anything, it has got worse. Despite that, we've failed to sign one new centre back for a third successive summer. We've kept the same right back who's past his best. We've had a succession of left-backs - decent performers but all of whom we've failed to keep hold of - and we've lost the best keeper we had in years. Why did we need to sign Gary Harkins? What exactly does he bring to the table that McGowan/McLean/McGinn don't? Why have so many creative midfielders when we have one proven striker, who - let's face it - is in the twilight of his career, and no ball winners? We let Guy and Imrie go in the summer. But at least these guys could provide something of a back-up, and were much pacier/more energetic than Thommo. They were not particularly good, but they were better than having nothing at all, which is what we have now. If we were going to make one 'key' signing in the summer, a Harkins-type player was the last thing that we needed. A centre/right back, goalkeeper, ball-winning midfielder or striker would have been higher up the list.

So we may bring in Newton and Campbell. Good additions, possibly, but where does that then leave us in six months, a year's time? Back at square one, possibly even further back than that. Probably without McGowan. Possibly without McGregor, depending on how he recovers and performs. Possibly (or should that be probably) without Teale and Thompson. And definitely without an experienced keeper. So that's no playmaker, no winger, no right back, no goalscorer, no goalkeeper, another defender down and possibly more should other circumstances arise (not to mention the fringe players out of contract).

Where is the long-term vision here? We have a couple of good youngsters - McGinn, Reilly - but who else do we have that's proven they're good enough for our first team? Even Reilly is still to prove that he is capable of being a Premiership player on a consistent basis - not a fault of his own, as he was injured last year, but still a fact. And while it's great that we have these guys, where is the goalscoring talent we've produced ourselves? Where's the centre back or the goalkeeper we've developed through the youth ranks? We have a habit of producing talented midfielders, but we have next to nothing elsewhere. We haven't had that for years. That is concerning for the future of our football club. A John McGinn or Kenny McLean emerging once every two or three years is not an indication of a successful youth system. It's a reasonably successful midfield production line.

We did very well to come into the SPL and then stay up in our first season, seemingly against all odds. Since then, we've had a major helping hand - due to unusual circumstances - in avoiding relegation. This season might be the same. However, that isn't just 'our level' and I hate people saying that it is. 'Our level' doesn't really exist any more, as teams like Ross Co, St J, ICT have proven. Your level is as high as you want it to be, as long as you can do what you need to do to achieve that. We're constantly told that top six is our ambition; so when other clubs around us are achieving that, and we are not, surely that has to be seen as failure? If we're not making our targets, why are changes not forthcoming? Why are we not implementing the changes we need to achieve that, within our means? Is this the very best we can do? While teams around us build on the squads they have, we are left scrambling around to fill numerous positions in our team at the last minute. People say this is the perfect year to consolidate with Hearts being deducted 15 points; does that mean we weren't confident enough in our own potential last year to think we were able to do anything other than fight another relegation scrap with a weak Dundee team?

I'm not naive enough to think St Mirren can be a top four/five/six team consistently, year on year, for a long period of time. Ross Co, St J, ICT etc. will have their fall again. But we haven't even been there once. We have never looked like being there once. I want to know what our excuse is for that. St J finished third last year with a team which included a player we let go for not being good enough, and another of our former players who many didn't believe to be good enough. That not only tells us that we're not getting the best out of certain players, but that we CAN sign the standard of player required to get us to that kind of level. I'm just not sure we have the standard of manager or coaching staff to get us there.

    This!

  5. Look, I've never been a Danny Lennon fan. Personal preference and for reasons not worth debating on this thread but the guys that are calling for his head after one bad result are just going OTT. Yes, there appear to be some deep seated issues with the way we have performed over most of his tenure and I think I can see where this will ultimately end up but getting shot of him after 90 mins? That's harsh, even for our support.

That being said, I do wish that the folk on other side of the argument would take a second to consider why people react like this and try to understand why the manager and his tactics are so divisive. As soon as someone rises their head above the parapet it's "boo boy this" and "knicker wetter that" without, it seems, taking the time to appreciate a view that is contrary to their own.

After umpteen pages of this there's nothing new being said so maybe the best option is to tone it down for a few days and see what the club's response will be to a disappointing start to the season.

I'm pretty sure we're all looking for the same thing here and that's success for the Saints, even if you're not a member of the Danny Lennon fan club.

  6. Why did we terminate contracts when there's no chance of replacing them. Danny has paid them off and now has no money. If that's the case it's totally stupid and pointlesss

Great point which definitely needs answered. We budgeted for saving these guys last year so what has changed over a season where the Cup win would have actually brought in more revenue than we had originally hoped for.

If Lennon wasn't going to be able to replace those that left we'd have been better keeping them for another season surely?

  7. Imrie, Adam and Guy have been released from their contracts.

Which of them do you wish was still here?

Imrie over Reilly, Guy over Brady and even Adam over Cornell.

Does anybody really think the three we currently have are better than those we let go?

  8. The board have already decided, this is a season for marking time and reviewing the landscape next summer.

So much of your post I disagree with but I thought it'd highlight this part.

If this is indeed the case the it really is a gamble as we're going to struggle badly with what we have now and could easily miss the playoffs and finish rock bottom. Along the way you've also lost 500-700 home fans paying an average £15 a head as they simply can't stomach watching us getting turned over by disciplined, workmanlike teams every other week, match day hospitality sponsorship and prize money at the end of the season. I reckon that's an easy £250k right there. Considering your average SPFL player is on less than a grand a week then that 5-6 players worth.

Oh, and good luck getting out of the Championship next year with Sevco in there.

  9. The statement you have made above is pure conjecture...

Nobody knows if the BOD is backing Danny with funds? How do you know that nobody knows that? Surely its possible that some folk on this forum know members of the BOD? Surely its possible that some folk on this forum know some of the players?

You really are spoiling for a fight today Bella.

You know exactly what I meant and to be honest if any member of our BOD blabs about this stuff outside of the boardroom to potentially de-stabilise things then it's a poor show.

  10. Fair amount of anger on both sides of the argument on here but maybe if we could just be objective for a moment and set aside all the bullshit we could move on.

The facts are simple. We lost 7 outfield players in the close season and have only replaced them with 2. That doesn't add up for me and is not what I expected when I parted with my season ticket money as soon as the club asked for it. We lost our first game heavily to a team that had done a fair bit of rebuilding in the summer too. Neither of those things at in dispute.

The other stuff that people talk about on here is just pure conjecture but it seems as though if it's mentioned enough then it becomes fact. It doesn't.

Nobody knows if the BOD is backing Danny with requisite funds or not. Nobody knows what the mood of the dressing room is, except the players and nobody knows what targets have been identified.

What is clear is that what we've seen over the pre-season and yesterday is not good enough and everyone connected with the club should feel the heat for that, not just Lennon. That being said the reaction is not simply based on the above, it's the result of watching sub-standard league performances for far too long now.

Things need to get better. I'm not convinced we have the right man at the helm to deliver that but he'll not be sacked that's for sure.

  11. You've got to imagine if Danny was able to bring players in he would, our shell of a squad isn't down to him we simply don't have the money. Grainger and Harkin are good signings but he has made a bit of an arse of it in the goalkeeping department.

Harkins may well have been brought in to replace McGowan but after the wee man stayed he is pretty much superfluous to our needs unless we're playing 4-5-1 which just won't work with Thommo up top IMO.

  12. Look, I'm not a fan of Lennon and never have been. He polarises the support like no manager has done for a while but to suggest he should get his jotters after one game is just silly.

I do understand the reaction though because this isn't merely a knee jerk as some have called it. A lot of us have seen this coming for weeks and that is the disappointing thing. A complete clear out at the end of last season and we've effectively only filled two needs ('keeper and left back) by the start of the season. Hawkins might turn out to be a great player for us but he simply wasn't required. That money should have been spent on an experienced striker. (I'll wager there's not much difference between what Harkins is on and what Sutton's taking home at 'Well)

We're weak at the back and have been for a good long while now. We're lightweight in midfield and if Thommo gets injured we are truly f**ked up front.

Personally I don't think a couple of kids from Newcastle are going to sort this mess out but they'd be a start.

The club asked for my season ticket money early on and got it as well as about a thousand more I'll bet yet we go into the first game without a recognised starting XI.

Total pish and it needs sorting this week.

  13. it"s really not that difficult to understand why we find ourselves here. We lost 7 outfield players (Dummet, Newton, Isma, Imrie, Carey, Guy and Parkin) who were all experienced pros and squad regulars. We've replaced them with Grainger and Harkins. Grainger is a like for like swap with Dummet but who does Harkins replace?

Add to that we've lost a very serviceable, experienced goalie and brought in a f**king train wreck on loan and it all adds up to some realy frustrating Saturdays ahead.

  14. Probably needs a real humping like this to provide the wake up call to everyone that we are in no way ready for this season and before anyone says calm down, the season doesn't start on Aug 31st it started today and we are being taken apart by another collection of english lower league journeymen pulled together by Butcher.

  15. The Pampers Posse are doing my head in.

Several weeks to go before the start of the season.

    Hearts at -15 points.

    Relegation financial cliff has gone.

Club saw crowd numbers drop last season too so no wonder they are not spending.

In the meantime I'm off to another thread where people don't suck all the life and energy out of me.

I used to think that you were a complete tool but now I'm not so sure. That post was either the most deliberately impressive use of irony or you are in fact just tool.

I was going I highlight the bits in question but.......well, you can work it out.

  16. Oh aye, them fans are loving it....................

Bournemouth fans were initially overjoyed on Tuesday when the club announced that it had secured a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid.

But that joy quickly turned to astonishment as it emerged that the long-suffering Cherries fans are being asked to stump up an astonishing £60 for tickets to the match.

Didn't stay "out" long did you? Just can't help yourself.

  17. Actually you got whooshed because you bounced like a melon into a conversation between two other people without stopping to consider the nature of the banter they were engaged in - so engrossed were you in the act of trying to verbally abuse one of them.

You were outfoxed by your lack of ability to understand the English language.

Like I said on another post I lack the patience to deal with people as slow as you.

That's why I directed the comment at Tom and not you so don't get involved in other peoples conversations and you won't outfox yourself again.

Ok, seriously, just stop now. The laughs are drying up. You and Faraway are like an old 70's comedy double act. I know I shouldn't be laughing but.......,,,
