  1. Yet another poor game tonight, could have played all night and not scored. Scrappy, unimaginative stuff. Plus Albion Rovers we’re charging £1 for a cup of tap water!!! Then a huge tailback going home on the M8 (looked like a really bad accident)

With regards to moving forward, Flynn, Baird, both Mcginns, Mullen, Mckenzie, magenis and the two new signings and keepers should stay as part of the squad, the rest should go out on loan. We need 6-7 quality signings to come in during this window.

this competition provided the scene for our greatest day in the last 32 years

This is a competition that matters and we are out.  Enough of this pre-season  pish, more successful teams are starting their season in the Europa league and we are starting our's in the league cup.  if we aspire to move to the next level then we need to do better at this one from day one.

We should be doing so much better, I think that Goodwin is not the best appointment but will  be happy to be proved wrong and concede that this situation is not very much of his making.  He is a big boy though and should have seen this coming

East Kilbride manager Stuart Malcolm was certainly not getting carried away with what could be regarded as a famous result for his club.

"It's still pre-season for everybody and you have to take that into consideration," he said.

"Our players are raising their game against higher opposition and there is no doubting St Mirren's quality."

This window at least, having a "Director of Football to ensure stability even if there is a management change" has been a complete failure. This isn't up for debate, the reason for bringing the role in couldn't have been clearer & having lost to a Championship team, failed to beat a non league team and be about to start the season almost without any full backs or wingers it is fairly obvious something has gone wrong.

This isn't intended to be a thread for the usual rabble to slag off Gordon, Tony and Gus. I would be interested to hear some genuine answers to the above. There is clearly something wrong with the management structure of the club for a relatively simple idea (one full time person recruiting players well in

If it’s not up for debate why did you post it on a fans forum?

I can see it isn’t intended to be ‘the usual rabble ‘ slagging of Gordon, Tony and Gus, because you have focused solely on Gus!

I am pretty sure Gus was employed for more than just player recruitment, his role was to mentor OK as he adjusted to full time football in Scotland.

I have no reason to believe that he won’t recruit better quality players before the window closes on the 2nd September. He has a good track record of recruitment in both the past and more recently.

Been 1st team squad players for ages now, youth my arse. Neither are remotely close to Premier league standard either.

Both weren’t playing or on the bench from January due to recruitment of better players in the window. They were part of the squad prior to this as there were no other options.

Pretty sure this group format starting in July wasn’t on the go when we won the cup in 2013?

More successful teams like Kilmarnock? Out the Europa league by a part time Welsh team. I can think of loads of better teams than stmirren who have been turned over by minnows in July.

Keep the faith, we will be fine.

Goodwin should be ripping this side apart and demanding the board give him more backing. We finished in the play off spot which was the wake up call that the side was not good enough. Going into a season with the dross we have is not acceptable. Yes we have weeks left on the transfer window but the season started last week.

I don’t think the players really feel the season has started, all these games have had an atmosphere of preseason about them ( trialists , youth players) the prices (£12) kind of promote that impression.

I am not worried at present as I think we will strengthen squad, however if the league started next Saturday with the same squad, then I would be looking for a refund on my ST

Apart from the 6 goals against Dumbarton!

I honestly didn’t/don’t have a problem with Stubbs, however it was pretty obvious that the team he assembled was not going to be successful in the top league. However the team that Goodwin has inherited has some players with one seasons experience in the top league, he will now have to add 5-6 quality players to this squad in order to have a fighting chance of staying up.

How many chances did we make last season and this season?

You're not making things up are you?

At this stage last season we had 6 points, I think?

No not making things up. I suppose what I am trying to say is that although results haven’t gone our way, I still feel that our performances and squad is still better than Stubbs teams performances and squad from last seasons cup games. I have no stats just my own subjective opinion from watching both cup runs.

Not a very good start to Goodwins reign.  Need to see a vast improvement soon, or we could be looking for yet another manager.

I don’t think we can blame Goodwin, he has only signed two players. Still not in the same league as Stubbs teams performances last year in the Cup, at least this team is creating plenty chances, Stubbs team definitely wasn’t.

Out the league Cup before our last game in this group is an embarrasment.

Just reinforces what everyone knows, that the vast majority of the squad aren't good enough for the top flight.

Both our strikers missing penalties as well, minter.

Having seen the last two performances this didn’t come as a surprise. However I would be worried if these performances were occurring in Nov/Dec with a full squad in place. We still have time to bring in some quality and loan out a few (i.e Erahon, Cooke, McPherson)

Who would you have played at full back instead?

I think it’s obvious that we don’t have the quality of player at the club right now to fill this and other positions. This will therefore become problematic as the season unfolds IF we can’t sign better players. I don’t see Cammy or Ethan being at the appropriate stage of their development to hold down starting places going forward (similarly they didn’t appear regularly in the second half of the season when replaced by loan deal players)

My original point was that I was surprised that JG thought Cammy had an ‘excellent game’ I suppose I was worried that this was the level of performance that we should aspire too/hope for during the upcoming season. I disagree, I think we will struggle with the current squad. Hopefully the club will find some quality signings before the window closes.

so too answer your original question, I would have played Cammy given there are no other options available.

Thought Cammy McPherson had a decent game tonight considering he is not a right back. But we were absolutely toothless up front until Mullen came on. Oan was decent - we actually had someone who would try and find space. And Erhahon as a left winger?????

I must have been watching a different game? He misplaced passes frequently and didn’t get past a single player when attacking.

I only saw the second half thanks to SMFCTV’s cock up, but based on that I’d say the only player who looked anything like the part was Djorkaeff.

You didn’t miss much. Djorkaeff will definitely be a starting player going forward, Flynn and Baird got pass marks, as did Mullen when he came on.However I don’t think McPherson, Erahon or Cooke should be getting starts, I would suggest that it might be good for them to go out on loan till the new year. Edinburgh were better than I expected, but we were pretty toothless right up till the 70 minute. Definitely need 5-6 quality signings before the start of the season (league) onward and upwards

A decent Front Cover for the Matchday Magazine this time.

The previous three seasons  were very poor and I am glad to see the rogue postcode removed.

Hopefully we will see more retro photos and maybe a retro programme cover from years gone by.

Just one thing, and I may be missing something very obvious.

    The  20/20

    What is that about  ?

Seems to me that it is  not needed.

    Somebody might explain.

It’s our new transfer window policy, 20 players in, 20 players out.

  15. This appears to come around every transfer window, that player we are linked with Signing that doesn’t go through.

I will start with the biggest let down first, it’s 2001 and Ronaldinho has just been snapped up for €15 million by Paris St Germain, but he is hoping to come to saints on loan for half a season! Unfortunately it all fell through and we got Stephen McPhee from Coventry instead.

How many others have there been?
