  1. Danny's legacy will be:

    1926, 1959, 1987, 2013.

Best league finish in 25 years.

    Youngsters in the first team.

However, with this squad and Rangers and Hearts in the doldrums, anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Scottish football will be able to see that we shouldn't be anywhere near 11th. We're there 2 seasons in a row.

When it comes down to it, I don't really care all that much what league we're in. Watching us play Motherwell or Hamilton? Not that bothered. It's been incredibly frustrating though having the quality of the likes of Thompson and not being able to, at the very least, consolidate for a few seasons in the middle of a relatively weak league.

I think ultimately we will look back on Lennon as the guy who assembled the best squad of players for a generation but just couldn't get them to play for him.

  2. Thats Neil Warnock, Owen Coyle, Stevie Clarke and Alex Mcleish all had a mention. Am i on the right website? is it still StMirren we're talking about. I understand folk are dissappointed and even angry but these guys are well well well well out our price range try and be realistic.

Yeah. It would be somebody like Billy Reid or maybe Peter Houston at a push.

  3. Now that we are actually in the relegation zone Danny is under extreme pressure. Wouldn't be a surprise if he is sacked before the next game. The freefall has to be stopped somehow; relegation this season and we might not be back for awhile with Rangers and Hearts in the Championship. I think it's pretty clear that we will have a new manager next season anyway, so maybe now is the time to change things. If the form continues then we will lose touch with 10th before the split.

  4. djembe is a great signing all the youngsters that go to see the saints will love watching his goal celebrations because they will come.

His goalscoring rate appears to be 1 goal every 2 seasons.,,,,

The guy's been about a bit. Clearly he wasn't English Premiership standard and has bounced about since then. Seemingly the best period of his career was a few seasons in the Danish league with Odense. What standard is that? Denmark 17th in the coefficient, Scotland 23rd... Slightly better maybe.

A lot will depend on his attitude. If he adapts quickly, can protect the back 4 so we leak fewer goals then he'll be a good signing. With the role he plays though, I wouldn't expect him to be grabbing headlines in the same way that Isma did.

  5. Maybe we couldn't get any in as they don't want to come.

Let's face it they would be on the bench most weeksPosted Image

We really need a centre half to go straight in the team.

However, for the players we are able to sign now their options may well be "on St Mirren's bench" or "on the dole" so I doubt they'll be picky.

  6. Seems almost suicidal to me that the transfer window has closed with us having only 2 recognised centre-halves, both of whom are not particularly reliable anyway.

We are well on course to conceding more goals than we ever have done in the SPL. Let's just hope we score enough goals to avoid 11th. Could well go down to the wire.

  7. We are 9th.

We will probably just about stagger along until the end of the season and have enough matchwinners to avoid 11th, despite that weak defence.

After 4 years of Danny managing the club the board will then have to decide if it is time for a change. My hunch is they probably will. The cup win was great and he assembles squads with plenty of talented individuals, but we just don't win enough games. Often we've been let down by the defence, which has never been solid enough under Lennon.

Add in the fact that the fans are scunnered and the likelihood is we probably will see a new guy come August.

  8. If you look at our best 11, there are top 6 teams who would happily take players from just about every position. Central defence is the exception...

Even at HT yesterday I didn't think that game was over, and it could easily have been 3-3 with those handballs.

With only two recognised centre halves left at the club we could really do with another two by the end of the window.

  9. That's terrible. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. I think he was on "Off The Ball" just the other week talking about his autobiography as well.

Yes, listened to him speaking on that between Christmas and New Year.

Sounds like the book and the publicity surrounding it was an attempt to try and lay some demons to rest. Unfortunately seems to have had the opposite effect, and proved to be too much for him. Sad to hear.

Here's an interview with him from last month:

  10. It is Celtic but.... the centre of defence has got to be addressed.

Last season was our worst in the SPL for goals conceded (60). We are on course now (34 conceded in just 20 games) for an even worse return, and that's with a brilliant keeper!

Combinations of McGregor/Mair/McAusland/Goodwin have been tried and will not do. Lennon didn't sign any defenders in the summer, so must have thought those he had would tighten up. Unfortunately not. The shakiness also seems to be affecting the confidence of the two excellent young full backs we've brought through. They need to be beside older pros they can rely on.

We haven't actually signed any centre-halves since McGregor and McAusland came in three and a half years ago. Freshening things up in that position is well overdue and should be a priority. It was a mistake by Lennon not to address the weak defence in the summer. Kello has papered over the cracks a wee bit but it's still our achilles heel, and could well leave us battling to avoid 11th.

  11. If McAusland had gone down during the game then probably Mair would have replaced him.

Looks like Lennon's told him he's coming on at HT, chewed it over then come up with the fairly bonkers plan B. He won plaudits for his tactics against Partick and Dundee Utd. Today I think he's just over-thought it when he should have played the percentage shot and used Mair.

Anyway, at the turn of the year, to be 8th in the league, 9 points above 11th and 5 points off 6th..... Would probably have taken that at the start of the season and it is a small miracle considering our start to the season.

  12. Mair must have been told he was coming on as he was doing a proper warm-up at HT then went down the tunnel a couple of minutes before restart.

DVZ meanwhile was strolling about and had a wee chat with Stevenson when Hearts came out.

Goodwin then appeared, spoke to DVZ who then sprinted down the tunnel and came on as a sub.

Very, very strange. Can only think that Danny changed his mind last minute about who to bring on.

  13. Trouble just now is that he is ageing, is starting to get overrun by direct skilful players more often than not and ends up carded out of games.

Spot on. I like having him in there protecting the younger players, but he's getting slower and can struggle to get into position to make tackles. Question is whether he can adapt his game to continue to offer something. You wonder if he's frustrated that he can't offer as much as he once could and this is making him lose his discipline a bit.

Similar kind of situation with DVZ. Too slow to play full back regularly and may have to remodel himself as an intelligent holding midfield player to prolong his career. Would be happy to see him start there in place of Goodwin today.

  14. Lennon did well to take him off yesterday. Bench him on Sunday?

Let's the dust settle a bit and makes it clear to Jim that he can't be a liability to the team. The referee will be quick to book him no doubt and getting him sent off will be in Gary Locke's team-talk. I would fancy us to beat them with or without Goodwin anyway, and we've got an arguably more important game at Killie a few days later.

  15. This passage from the BBC report is interesting:

He had not guilty pleas accepted to kicking Special Constable Martine McNee on the body and acting in a threatening and abusing manner likely to cause fear and alarm.

So someone must have accused him of kicking a female officer and behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, yet they couldn't pin this on him. That's a curious one.

Moreover, if he wasn't acting in a threatening and abusing manner when kicking out at the other officers, you have to wonder how much intent he had to genuinely cause harm.  Did he think he was defending himself?  I don't know, but it does introduce an interesting slant, no?

Eh let's get real here. I know we like the guy as a footballer, but come January he will have 2 convictions for assaulting police officers.

Speculating about the circumstances is pointless. If there was any doubt about his guilt his lawyer would have advised him to plead not guilty. Don't forget that the police office where the incident happened will have captured it all on CCTV.

I will no doubt still cheer the next time he scores a goal for us, but I think it's natural to think less of him.
