  1. This flies in the face of the Scottish Governments supposed experts.

Minimum Unit Price study - Press Office - Newcastle University (ncl.ac.uk)

"MUP was also not associated with reduced consumption in younger, living in more deprived areas, or heaviest drinking men — those the policy was primarily designed to target — the findings show. Indeed, consumption increased among the 5% of heaviest drinkers following its introduction".

I remember when I worked at Dunlop as a young man the rampant drinking culture that was present in the factory.  I recall one morning a manager demanded an obviously drunk employee should not be allowed to clock in, only to be told the guy had just completed a night-shift and was clocking out, not an uncommon occurrence.  Many of the guys I worked with were physically done-in by their mid fifties due to their drinking and many of them never worked again after the factory closure due to their physical state. I  can't say for certain but I would be quite happy to accept that many of the deaths of people in the generations before mine were not recorded as alcohol-related or caused by alcohol yet alcohol was definite major factor.

Education does need to be carried out, however other deterrents are needed and i do agree that the money from the alcohol price increase should be pumped into public health.  It is true that the Scottish Government can't apply a specific tax as alcohol duty is claimed by the exchequer, however I understand (hoping that the source is correct) that the current government is considering a levy on the retail outlets to a figure (57 million a year) equivalent to what they get extra from alcohol sales in Scotland

I can say that the minimum pricing has definitely made me question how much I drink and if I really need it.  I know several who think the same and for me, drinking at home has become an occasional treat rather than a fixture in my week.

We need to remember we are trying to undo many decades of abuse

The crazy thing here is that it is likely that it will be those who DON'T drink to the stage of it being a problem are the ones who will likely "question" how much they drink because nobody needs it until they do. The question that needs to be asked is, "Will it stop those who think they do need it from not taking it"? I personally don't think so. The only positive that I can see, and it is a dubious one, is that the corner shop can compete with the supermarkets on alcohol sales so folk who DO believe they need it won't be travelling to out of town retail parks to fuel their habit. I suppose that should reduce the carbon footprint.🫢

ETA. Do you honestly know any alcoholic or serious problem drinker who has suddenly decide d to join the ranks of the teetotallers due to this specific measure? (Almost a pun there).

    Bunch of imposters.

The drummer is the only original member still playing with them.

The lead singer from the original line up is the manager. I don't think it really matters, if it's the music you yearn for, as long as the sound is the same, it's still a good gig.

  4. The first half was almost bearable but, second half. 10 outfield players and subs that looked like they never saw a football before. No shape and no idea how to play a forward pass. Not one player looking up to see where their team mates were and playing everything in front of Killie. The very way you're taught NOT to play against 10 men. I said from very early in the second half we were never winning the game 2-1. We also gave a lesson in how not to defend at corners. Schoolboy error on the first and all panic to gift them what I was sure was an og for the second. All in all, a very bad day at the office.

  5. When are people going to get wise and realise minimum pricing alcohol is NOT the answer to the ongoing issue, if there is one, of alcohol related deaths. It has made NO difference to the numbers. The death number assumed to be caused by alcohol sits at 1,277. They claim this is a larger number than previous years but, IS IT if taken in the context of a percentage of the population? The census last year showed the population of Scotland grew by 2.7%. The number of deaths associated with alcohol, and I would dispute these numbers as "hard fact", did NOT increase by 2.7%. Neither did it shrink substantially throughout the overbearing, interfering, nonsensical introduction of the minimum pricing. The only way to change habits is to educate. All that happens is that you chase the problem underground. Eventually illicit alcohol WILL be a viable option. The very concept of giving shop owners an extra massive income while punishing the majority of the population is obscene. IF the Scottish Government had the ability to make it a tax which could then be directed at the treatment of the "disease" I would be more inclined to accept it but they can't so, in turn, I CAN'T. To be clear, it's the concept I can't accept. I have no option but to accept the consequences of this lunacy.

  6. I don't think it merits it's own thread as it is nothing to do with Saints and I am anything but sympathetic to either have of the ersecheeks but what the blue orcs were doing at Ibrokes was shocking. Venting your frustrations at a football match is one thing but to abuse players in the street is surely a no go. If they were to do this  to any ordinary punter they'd likely find themselves in the dock. And that's where these thugs should be.

To put a bit of balance on this. Did you see the stats for the cellic/sevco game? It should have been a draw. 🙃

Stats are like bikinis. What you see is interesting. What you don't, more so.

My 16 year old daughter has found Oasis so she plugs her phone into the car socket and blasts their songs out wherever we are driving to.

    I quite like their music.

And no doubt, (a tenuous link to one of the brothers, {allegedly}), the songs were really great but it still doesn't equate to not only paying exorbitant fees , but with add ons, to go and watch them possibly destroying the myth. I think I'll just stick to either the old fashioned Ipod or spotify. Whatever the feck that is!🤣

Apparently, by the time you got to the end of the process to buy the tickets legally, you could set fire to a damn sight more than a hundred and fifty smackers!

I liked their stuff when it was relevant, even though, by the time the so called Indy scene was such, I probably wasn't, but no chance I'd fawn over a couple of petulant, aged artists who have only resolved their issues, at least and likely, only on the surface, because they want to rip the p!sh out of silly punters who, in the main, are probably only hell bent on trying to recapture their youth.

I'm with you, or at least, with the sentiment of the quote, on this Shull.

  10. I was truly saddened to hear about his illness and was impressed with the way he handled the whole situation. I don't suppose anyone can predict how they would react to the news he got without being in the situation but I wouldn't imagine anyone could handle it with more positivity and dignity.

A belated RIP to a man who always came across as decent.

  11. Daily Express headline:

"Humiliation for SNP as police launch another investigation after Nicola Sturgeon arrest"

    The actual story?

Nothing to do with the SNP

The new investigation, dubbed Operation Broadcroft, centres on the handling of sexual misconduct allegations against Alex Salmond, the former First Minister and SNP leader.

This probe is particularly focused on whether a senior civil servant, James Hynd, provided false testimony under oath during an inquiry into the allegations against Salmond, a Court of Session hearing heard earlier this week

This is how badly the unionist press want to discredit and criminate the SNP.

Even after their troubled election result it seems the establishment are still running "feart" of the independence movement.

  12. I was hoping to travel for this one but I couldn't get my standby shift covered and, as it turned out, I didn't even get to keep up with the scores as I was called out on an emergency and ended up in a place without any service.

I have just managed to watch the highlights and I have to say, our two "dud" strikers took their goals really well. Mandron's in particular was a peach. (Maybe KVV's impending arrival has bucked them up).

The first equalizer was a travesty. A straight ball over the top. Gogic should never get pushed off his stride. Taylor lost the ball in the air. Quite frankly? It should never happen.

Still. Going by the little I saw and the stats it looks like a draw was a fair result. Stops the rot and now we have a couple of weeks to get our strike force up to speed and try to stop the silly mistakes at the back.

  13. To put it quite simply, we didn't lay a glove on them. Hardly had a shot at goal and they went through our midfield?? like a hot knife through butter. I did fear this when I saw the midfield on team sheet. O'Hara just back, Phillips put straight in and Gogic moved from defence. We were fortunate not to have a similar score line to Ross County yesterday. I didn't expect to win but I did think we'd press better. They were just a lot better in every department. This one we cannot blame on the officials at all.

While I doubt it would have made any difference, for the main part, and I know he put in one really good kick, I don't like our keeper taking free kicks in the middle of the park.

Even though we were basically destroyed, I actually thought our standout player was Taylor.

Excellant. The less midweek games the better. Also means we get Hearts when they are still playing twice a week in League and Europe.

I doubt Hearts will be playing in Europe by the time this game goes ahead. I think the Czech team will see to that.

Sorry. I just realised they will fall into the Conference. I stand corrected.

  15. It's a bold move compared to the past. At least we're taking a chance with longer term contracts. I hope it pays off with continued progress on the park and/or ensuring we get a decent return IF he is the subject of interest to others.

    Welcome Killian.

You absolutely hold the right to any view you want whether I agree with that view or not. I hope your grandson is good enough to reach a level where “they” might be interested in signing him for some inflated salary, that’ll be an interesting conversation in the “Lucifer” household 🤞👍

It would likely be the fourth or fifth incarnation as I reckon it could be two years before he'd be ready for the step up.

I am absolutely no fan of the blue arsecheek but that is one blinkered view imo…..he’s done a more than decent job for us and for that will always have my goodwill until he does something, if he ever does, to St Mirren’s detriment.

I absolutely reserve the right to hold a "blinkered view" when it comes to that mob who stole the clothes of a dead club without paying the debts of said club then proceeded to try to destroy Scottish football with their arrogant, better than you attitude and had the f'n nerve to come pleading with the authorities for a bed for the night year when their penny pinching led to them losing their stolen home. I'm just sad that those authorities caved in and gave them temporary shelter.

May they go the way of the mob whose name they assumed.

And he undoes any well earned goodwill by even contemplating jumping ship to the faux rangers.
