The report was published in 1974.

The independence referendum took place in 2014.

    2014 - 1974 = 40.

I suppose the late 70s, early 80s wouldn't have been too late. My knowledge of oil fields is limited to what I have read about the Peak Oil phenomenon, but essentially when an oil field has first been drilled it's much cheaper to extract the oil. As it gets depleted it becomes more expensive to extract. Just Googled and voila:

    Source: https://www.planete-energies.com/en/media/article/life-cycle-oil-and-gas-fields#

Also, it's usually the oil fields that are cheapest to exploit that are drilled first. In other words, the best money was made in the 1970s and 1980s. We were robbed. And some utter fools actually think that's a good thing and respect the robber! Such folk can usually be found on the slopes of Ibrox.

You should focus on the fact that a referendum in the early-mid 70s would have had a very good chance as support for independence was on the rise and the truth about the value of the offshore reserves would have swung the vote further towards "leave".  Maybe not enough to secure independence at that point, yet that knowledge would have stoked support for independence given the behaviour of the Tories, who having successfully divided and conquered went on to ride a wave of support built on the money raised from oil.

Successive westminster governments squandered the alternative vehicles for getting decent, but somewhat lesser, taxpayer benefit from the proceeds by  dismantling BNOC and selling off BP.

I am all in favour of independence, but I'd probably never have got to this point had it not been for Westminster's serial squandering and selling-off of national assets that made money for the taxpayer alongside the criminal failure to set up a national wealth fund based on the oil revenue.  The money was used to prop up governments instead of securing our future and that of our children

There is still enough out there to gove Scotland a decent pot to build on and my own belief is that we would see a steady migration of busineses from across the UK once Scotland was, in some form, back in the European fold.

Dodged a bullet then by voting "No" for independence as the SNP were looking to provide us all the promised land based on oil and gas revenue.

    Whew. 👍

With independence the opportunity for a far faster transition to Renewable energy would have gone hand-in-hand with the just transition away from oil.

Well it is a stmirren forum is it it not? A place to discuss saints related issues? You could of followed your own advice and simply replied to this thread or ignored it, you chose the former 👍🏻

Yes, but if i wanted an answer to that question I would go to the person making the survey request, not asking a bunch of people who don't know the rationale.

My only possible motivation for asking the forum would be a desperate cry for attention and I'm not that needy.

    And

    It's could have.  You're welcome

  4. So instead of training and rehabillitation, long term sick will be forced to take "workplace placements"  to allow them to continue to take benefits, no mention of jobs as a result, just placements.  At the same time, after citing the increase in the living wage, he will supress wages for the already low-paid because the incentive to be a competitive employer will be taken away.

A two-edged sword that will be unique in that both edges will be cutting the same people twice with the same swipe.

  5. As this process of de-industialisation continues, the effects become more fundamental and damaging, if this place closes in 18 months time then I really don't know where Scotland goes from here.

Sunak happily announces that the new oil licences will provide energy security, although he knows the oil will go straight into the global trading system and very little of it lands in the UK.  Let's see if he is truly committed to energy security by supporting the site, no doubt in my mind that it would be saved if it was in England.

Ineos have been sweating the asset for decades and now that he has enough money to buy a football club, Ratface-Ratcliffe will be moving refinery operations to the far-east.  I doubt that any part of the complex will be left in a fit state for a competitor to take it over and  If north-sea gas stops flowing into Grangemouth then Mossmorran and Braefoot bay will be under threat, another 1000 jobs going when you include contractors.  Maybe 5 times that in the local economy.

If we were investing properly in biofuels, we would also have a relatively healthy future for petroleum in the medium term, but the UK just lets the far-east carry on churning out the carbon and offshoring our emissions

There are idiots everywhere and by highlighting this individual incident, does that delegitimise the Israel/Palestine issue.

Why didn't you post a link showing the hoards of the English Defence League attacking the police because they objected to the pro-peace Palestine march?

"told STV News he has been forced to up his security including him being told to carry a panic alarm and to avoid public transport."

So he basically got told by police to carry a whistle and be careful on the buses.  But he reckons he has "upped his security".   If he exagerrates that then how much of the "assault" allegation has been "upped"?

    I have to laugh.

If you have read any of the historical background or the current coverage you'll see that everything in this video is totally twisted and wrong.

I thought that you might have been aware of propaganda but since you have posted this, you are clearly in support of Israel's illegal occupation and opposed to the reports by B'tselem (the Israeli human rights organisation), Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International which defined Israel as an apartheid state - a racist state.

You just need to look at that title page to know where it is from.

Anyone else going to this? :)

Any score predictions? Have I wasted thirty-two 'fecking quid'?

I don't see how anyone can enjoy the "experience" away fans get at either if the big Glasgow slums.  Those around have free-rein to abuse and harass,  even thrown objects will be tolerated.

I went to the first post-promotion game there in the Gus McPherson era and despite us getting a great result I vowed never to return. I don't see the point of paying good money to be treated like shit by these people just because they can.

A slight overreaction for a “supporter” of a team currently 3rd in the league in front of teams with budgets 3,4,5 times greater than us.

Plus the manager stated there had been a sickness throughout the squad that’s impacted the last two games.

Why don’t you go to the training ground on Monday and tell the manager and players what you think of them.

    Now that would take guts.

    The problem is

    you are just a troublemaker

please go and annoy someone who gives a shit about what you think

Sounds like it was blessing that I had to go out and miss the 2nd half...  Think we've all noticed certain players have lost a bit of form these last few games.. which often seems to happen when players are not playing for a contract..  not wanting any unnecessary injuries kind of... and with a transfer window on the horizon...just a coincidence maybe...

    no

just a gutless bunch who think the only letters in team are m&e

Agree regarding Mandron but couldn't disagree more with the rest.  Tanser had a great first half resulting in several good deliveries into the box. Kiltie covered every blade of grass trying to make up for Mandron's lack of effort and he used the ball well. Baccus won more tackles in his first 5 minutes than the pedestrian O'Hara had done up to that point.  He also brought a strangely quiet Strain into the game more, and generally lifted the tempo of the entire team as soon as he came on (despite his foul after about 8 seconds 😄).

From my position, i could see that the bulk of the problems we had defending, especially in the first half, were a result ofthere being no "out" ball for Gogic and Taylor especilly along the left.   We continually lost possession on the left side due to poor positioning and I felt that most of the crosses were overhit

I thought Baccus did dig in and his use of the ball wasn't at his usual standard.  I was told he is carrying an injury so hopefully he won't be travelling to join his national team

  12. Hibs have good players in every position, some of whom are better than our corresponding first pick and they continue to play like Livingston.  There is not much change between the style of their two managers and their stand-in this season.

The latest excuse-making manager, who probably won't last any longer than Johnson, was bleating about decisions however you could see their spirit desert them as the match ran into the final minutes.  Good players don't seem to like persisting with the gamesmanship and spoiling that these managers demand.  Wasting time with 70 minutes left is guaranteed to feel like a burden on a player, unless you are a nasty git like Marshall, and rather than win a point i think we were there to catch one of the two that Hibs dropped

Biggest positives were LJ's performance and Hemmings continued improvement.  I don't think we had an open-play goal in us until LJ appeared and that's a worry.  Mandron was flat from the start and Baccus looked like he is struggling, Kiltie & Tanser just never got going either.

Just wondering how most folk travel to away games, if you go to any. Purely out of curiosity, otherwise known as nosiness.

I have only included the three typical options, though I appreciate some fly in from abroad or travel by multiple modes of transport (e.g. ferry and then train). Of course there may be folk who claim to travel by helicopter or hovercraft or something, too, but I can't see that being typical so haven't included them - but if that's you, feel free to leave a comment. :)

Mostly bus, 30% car, occassionally train

That game !! I was in the Tudor lounge having lunch with my heavily pregnant wife. I wasn't planning on going to the game. Toshie was doing his rounds in the pub and asked why I wasn't going , I told him the situ re my missus and he said there were two spare seats , and he wouldn't charge for her. So we went , and when that late winner went in I got caught up in the celebrations , only to glimpse the good lady flat on her back on the terrace , but she was ok , and we won and just about guaranteed our survival ! 😇

I heard you dropped Carol while trying to give Leanne a lift-over

  15. Wednesday ticket update

    Got my e-mail

Thank you for purchasing our cinch Premiership match against Hibernian.

Please Note: The match is a 7:45pm KO on Wednesday 8th Nov.

Your e-ticket is attached.  Please present this e-ticket on your smart phone at the turnstile.  Alternatively, use 'print at home' and present your paper copy for scanning. "

There is, of course, no e-ticket attached so it's turn up extra-early and queue up in the cold as they usually don't re-send these e-tickets, relying instead on the goodwill of the SLOs to get the fans in

A great example of the "current workings" of the club as experienced by fans who rely on remote purchases

Still loads available if the dot counter thing is anything to go by.

I am in W3 and the bulk of the empty seats seem to be in the front rows or in the south of W1.

  16. Plenty of tickets still available for Dundee, got mine for Wednesday's game and Saturday's, however Wednesday looks in short supply already.

You can tell how slick and profesional the operation is when you get this message to confirm your purchase of single match tickets

"You have successfully purchased your Season Ticket for the 2021/22 season.

    Thank you for your support,

From all at St Mirren Football Club

    #InYouWeTrust"

    Right back atcha!

but is it, not the case that there is no case to answer if what has been said is true?  ie; calling someone a lying barstuard, is not defamation if in fact they are illegitimate and have told an untruth

That is test 1, is it untrue?  You can't be defamed if the accusation or statement has enough truth in it

If it is untrue, you then have to prove the harm you have been done.  Not always easy to quantify, the courts don't have enough time on their hands to rule on someone getting laughed at behind their back in the golf club.  If they have had significant financial or reputational loss then that is different
