Scottish international football has a long and illustrious history. Filled with legendary moments of victory and utter heartbreak, in equal measure, few national teams can have undergone the ups and downs that Scotland has. Thus, it stands to reason that many of its foreign and homegrown players have bagged several international caps. Below, we give the most capped players in St Mirren's history.
Alex Greive (pictured)
Scotland has never gone into a Euro qualifier as bold and confident as the way it has in the most recent campaign. With four wins from four matches and a sterling performance over Georgia, it seems that qualifying is already a done deal.
Bookmakers are now giving odds as high as 5/2 for qualification. Part of this reinvigorated national squad could be down to the country's football leagues, currently also undergoing a long-awaited resurgence in popularity. While Celtic and Rangers remain favourites, other teams like Aberdeen and Hearts will now give them a run for their money.
All of this is a result of the homegrown talent and exceptional foreign players that are now in the Scottish leagues. One of these is Alex Greive. In March, he managed to become the most-capped international player ever to wear a St Mirren shirt. Playing for New Zealand, a match against China propelled him to St Mirren's legendary status of eight caps.
Greive only had his first call-up in January 2022. In a match against Uzbekistan, he managed to net two goals. At a young age, he has already had a globe-trotting career for teams as varied as Birkenhead and Cinncinati.
Alex Gogic
A close second is Alex Gogic, currently on seven international caps. Playing for Cyprus, recent games against Scotland and Armenia have pushed him forward, and he only needs one more to overtake St Mirren legends, Iain Munro and Billy Thomson.
Gogic began his career playing at Olympiacos, then carried on his youth career at Swansea City. He was scouted by Hamilton Academic and played with them until 2020. During this time he played under 19 and 21 international football. However, his senior team call-up was postponed due to illness. He made his senior debut later in a match against the Czech Republic.
Billy Thomson and Iain Munro
Both players held the record for the most capped St Mirren player for a long time, equalling seven caps. Unlike the other players on the list, they were capped for Scotland.
Billy Thomson had a career at several Scottish teams. A solid keeper, he had stints in every team from Clydebank to Rangers. He played in a UEFA Cup final for Dundee and made two Scottish Cup finals, as well as playing for the national team. After his playing career, he took up work as a goalkeeping coach.
Iain Munro made 103 league appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals while gaining his international caps for Scotland. He then moved to Hibernian before a short stint at Rangers. After his playing career, he took up positions as a manager and later a coach.
We can only hope that in the years to come, fresh talent gives way for more astonishing cap records to be achieved.
