whosyirdaddy Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 All of a sudden my Windows Automatic Updates has stopped and de-activated itself. Ive done all of the following Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted) Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed) To make sure these services are running: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type services.msc and then click OK. 3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties. 4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply. 5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. 6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties. 7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply. 8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. 9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties. 10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply. 11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. However it does allow me to re-activate them but when I refresh or close the box in question down it goes back to a disabled status. Anyone got any ideas Quote
Svensen Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I take it you've tried a restart after starting all the services again, if not, give it a go and check that the services are all up and running. If they still go back to 'disabled' state, run an anti-virus on your machine. Have you recently run a repair on your Windows cos I heard that messed with Auto Updates. tbh Auto Updates is a pain in the arse and something most of us can do without, more often that not people get probs with the updates Microsoft send to you as they often interfere with hardware/software that Microsoft hasn't tested them with. You're better to pick and choose the ones you need. Point is it should work anyways, if I were you I'd see what happens after a restart and make sure there's nothing dodgy running on your machine. I know this was giving people probs with updates as well. Another thing to try is setting BITS to 'Automatic' cos I know some services have a problem with 'Manual'. There are tools here and there that can repair your update service but I haven't used them so I'm not sure how well they'll work... I found this one, its at the bottom of the page but as I say I've never used it so don't know how good or bad it is... Quote
