When ye install XP from scratch yer meant to enter a product ID code(usually on the back of the CD cover) so Microsoft know ye have a legit copy.All it means is yer mate might not be able to recieve update automatically from Microsoft as they wont recognise his Software as being official.Ye might be able to download any critical patches direct from Microsoft but am not sure.Other than that he's good to go.
