Scottish Football Ups and Downs 2018/2019

Arbroath are the first club this season to clinch a league title after a 1-1 draw away to Brechin City secured the point needed to seal the League One title. Raith Rovers lost on the day anyway, so the title would still have been sealed. I’ll use this thread to keep track of what’s going on as the final weeks pan out.

Premier League

Celtic are nearing 8 in a row with Sevco 2012 the only side who can mathematically stop them, but it’s nearly a done deal. It’s more interesting seeing the battle for Europe, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen lead Hibernian by 6pts. Hearts are 8pts off Killie and Dons, but if they can shock the Green Bigots in the Scottish Cup Final they can nick a European place from whoever finishes 4th. As we know only three clubs are at risk from relegation, and that’s going to be covered on many occasions elsewhere on here.

Championship

Ross County are 6pts clear with 9pts to play for as they look for an immediate return to the top flight. Only Dundee United can deny them, and they need just one more point to guarantee 2nd and avoid the first playoff round. Ayr United and Inverness Caley Thistle are likely to meet in the opening round. Dunfermline can mathematically change that but they have to win all 3 of their final matches. They could also go down, with the relegation battle looking intense. Partick and Morton have a game in hand, Falkirk, QOTS and Alloa are down there too. 4pts between 6th and 10th, great if you’re a neutral.

League One

Arbroath have sealed the title. Raith and Forfar are definitely in the playoffs and are now fighting for 2nd. It’s likely Montrose will fight East Fife for the final playoff spot. Airdrie 2002 are the Dunfermline of this league, could go up or down but probably won’t so either. Brechin City and Stenhousemuir are level in the bottom 2 right now, 4 points adrift of Stranraer and Dumbarton.

League Two

Peterhead lead by 4pts as Clyde’s points deduction may well cost them the title. Edinburgh City and Annan Athletic will definitely make the playoffs. Edinburgh could win the title but it’s unlikely. Albion Rovers lead Berwick Rangers by 2pts in the fight to avoid the relegation playoff, Albion’s gifted 3pts from Clyde’s admin error could be detrimental to Berwick.

East Kilbride are champions this year. BSC Glasgow and newly promoted Kelly Hearts have put in strong showings. Selkirk folded early on so bottom place is already sorted, luckily for Whitehill Welfare who only have 9pts.

Highland League

A 1-0 win at Forres means Cove Rangers win the Highland League for the 2nd year running, and they will face East Kilbride in the battle for promotion. Cove were unlucky last year as some poor refereeing against Cowdenbeath seen them miss out on promotion. Brora Rangers put up a strong fight but are 6pts behind with 1 match left.

Promotion to Lowland League

I’m still trying to work this one out as it’s different from last season. The East of Scotland league is in mid-restructure, it’s changed from last season and will change again next season. Right now it’s been split into three leagues, and the winners of each league will meet in a round-robin. Bonnyrigg Rose will definitely be involved, while Penicuik and Broxburn hold the advantage in the other two sections. Meanwhile the South of Scotland league has been easily won by Stranraer Reserves, who I imagine would not be allowed to participate in any promotion bid. Bonnyton Thistle are 2nd but I have no idea whether they will feature in some sort of promotion playoff. Last season it was a simple meeting of the two Champions (Kelty Hearts destroyed Threave Rovers), but with a different EoS setup I’m not sure what’s going to happen.

Here’s the latest:

Premier League

If Sevco 2012 fail to win today, the other bigots win the title. Any point for Aberdeen would give them a bit of daylight to claim 3rd and the Europa League spot. A Hibs win would put pressure on Kilmarnock for the 4th, and potential final Euro spot.

Mathematically any of Hamilton, St Mirren and Dundee could go down automatically, but one more defeat for Dundee would seal their fate.

Championship

Ross County are champions. Dundee United are guaranteed 2nd. Ayr United will play Inverness in the first playoff round. Any of five teams could still be relegated. Falkirk must win against the champions to avoid going down automatically, and need Ayr to defeat Alloa. QOTS are catchable but this would require a large GD swing as  Queens are -4 to Falkirk’s -13. If Queens match Alloa’s result they’ll be safe. Wins for both of those would put Partick in trouble. Dunfermline should be safe as they sit 3pts clear of Alloa and have a better GD of 8, but it’s not a done deal.

League One

Arbroath are champions. Forfar Athletic lead Raith Rovers by 1pt in the battle for 2nd. Montrose have done really well upon promotion and find themselves guaranteed 4th, so they’ll be facing the Championship side. Stenhousemuir and Brechin City are the definite Bottom 2, Stenny lead Brechin by 1pt. It’s a straight fight at Glebe Park between these two to avoid automatic relegation.

League Two

An injury time leveller from Stirling denies Peterhead the league title. They lead Clyde by 2pts, and may well have Clyde’s admin error to thank if they do take the league next week. Edinburgh City are 3pts above Annan Athletic in the fight for 3rd, both are guaranteed to be in the playoffs. Albion Rovers’ 3-0 win in Berwick means they will definitely avoid a 2nd straight relegation, while the Wee Rangers will have to face the relegation playoff.

Playoffs

East Kilbride 1-2 Cove Rangers

A good first leg victory for last year’s beaten finalists, but they may end up regretting Kilby’s 92nd minute consolation. It will be a battle of the Rangers if Cove see the 2nd leg through.

Lowland League Promotion

Bonnyrigg Rose, Broxburn Athletic and Penicuik Athletic will compete for the possibility to seal a place in the Lowland League.

f**k knows if South of Scotland League has any involvement this time around, with Stranraer Reserves winning it they probably can’t anyway, not seen anything suggesting 2nd placed Bonnyton Thistle will be involved.
