  1. Not sure about this. The only companies who would consider making life difficult for their customers by doing this would be those who think there is a market for it. All of the others will be too desperate for cash after a year of difficulty to want to enforce anything. When the law is lifted I think that'll be the end of it.
  2. I think things will go back to normal except for people being more cautious if they, or someone else, has a cough/temperature etc. Agreed but I suspect even that will be forgotten by next summer.
  3. That is pretty unfortunate to say the least. You are right about the risks. They are very real and won't be going away (potentially ever although I'm not fully bought into that narrative yet - it may still burn itself out) but the vaccines will never protect us 100%. Not sure about the "complacency" comment (just don't like the word) but I do think that within a few weeks or months people will be back to behaving as normal pre-2020 as long as hospitalisations remain low. Will be interesting to see if people ditch social distancing and masks in shops once the law is removed.
  4. I suppose they are opening things up now rather than waiting for full vaccination of the entire population because you have to re-open at some point. And when you do, we might be wrong about how effective our vaccines are. Better to find that out in summer than in autumn/winterwhen other things like flu are kicking off. So I guess the decision was down to either re-opening now or waiting another full year until next summer.
  5. That's Javid confirmed that England will remove the law on mandatory mask wearing from next Monday. One of the scientific advisors to the Welsh government has just said Wales should follow suit with removing restrictions and I think Northern Ireland are also looking at this. It'll be difficult to see how Sturgeon can be any different given the open borders. I suspect many people will continue to wear masks in public and I respect their right to do that if that's what they want, regardless of my own opinions on their value.
  6. fair enough... but in many cases that has risen to xenophobic hatred which gets worse by the year. It spills into school bullying BEK. That's one of the many areas where I have a problem with it. None of this is benign. This Anyone But England pish has nothing to do with not having a sense of humour about it either, which is the usual line of attack. It's thinly veiled anti-English pish.
  7. FFS. Gutted? Do you ever look in the mirror and think to yourself "There's something not quite right here"?
  8. Correct. Unsurprisingly, FTOF struggled to understand that simple point. That seems to be becoming something of a habit.
  9. Because you are a full grown adult are you not?
  10. Not fussed either way. Just disappointed that Scotland are not in this position. I have close friends up here who are English and I'm happy for them that they get to experience something like this because this isn't something which happens very often. For that reason I'll be quite happy for them to win. Also, I'm a grown man, not a 12 year old child. The arrogance or the entitlement thing is odd. If you want arrogant and entitlement, you can't get better than the Germans, the Dutch, the Spanish and the Italians. Alternatively, closer to home, speak to any police officer or school teacher and see if you can last minutes without wanting to walk away in despair. In 1978, we sent thousands to Argentina believing that we were GOING to win that World Cup. I also remember the rage when we lost to Peru and couldn't beat Iran. Costa Rica in 1990 was another low point so we're not above any of this.
  11. Sickening? That's an odd choice of phrase.
  12. Nah. They fully deserved that win tonight. By far the better team. Should have had a 2nd half penalty too. Good game to watch.
  13. Good game and good win for England. Thoroughly deserved in the end with Denmark fading after 65 minutes. England should have had a penalty in the 2nd half. Can't see them losing on Sunday.
  14. Rather than some of us pretending we have the faintest idea how this all works because we've spent 5 minutes Googling it, here's a link to some people who you can be sure absolutely do know. https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/lightning/faq/ Looks like I was on the right tracks about the build up of a charge differential and then energy being subsequently released. The bit I forgot was about the dielectric (in this case the air) breakdown causing lightning although the mechanism behind that is perhaps not so clear. You then see thunder coming from the shock wave as the air tries to move above the speed of sound so you were right there. Most interestingly of all, it's the lightning channel which precipitates the thunder so @smcc was right all along. Between the 3 of us, we finally got there. And had an unusually interesting chat in the process. Well at least I was interesting. Least said about you.....
  15. Yes, presumably the air is being forced to move faster than the speed of sound. This isn't an area I have any expertise in at all really. I've done a tiny amount of atmospheric chemistry stuff so I know little bits about ozone and pollution and how things like lightning can provoke various reactions but that's it. I did read a nice wee book from the 50s which covered thunder and lightning amongst other things (including global warming which surprised me - didn't know they were even talking about it back then) but I've forgotten a lot of it.
  16. Thing is though, that the best permorming team never seems to win these things. I think England might well win the whole thing but the final could end up being brutal to watch. England usually always seem to find ways of winning at home regardless of the opposition.
  17. Pretty sure that's not true but happy to be corrected. Both occur as part of the release of energy from the build up of massive charge differences in the atmosphere. Sound and light are emitted. Probably some heat too. Definitely a whole heap of chemical changes too including the formation of ozone. Our atmosphere is an amazing thing.
  18. We won't be re-introducing any legally enforced restrictions again unless the NHS shows signs of being overwhelmed again and the NHS head in Engand assures us that won't happen this winter. I'll fully relax on that score if we get to Spring next year but I suspect we're done with being told what to do like fecking toddlers.
  19. And with that statement from Boris, it's all over for legally enforced restrictions in England including masks. Given that we have open borders to England, we'll be forced to follow suit sooner rather than later but this is all over bar the shouting. Thank f**k for that. It's a real shame Sturgeon has allowed Boris to set the positive agenda here. I like her but this endless suffocating caution has really damaged her. Will be interesting to see if she accepts her hand is forced now or whether she attempts to brazen it out for another few weeks. Over to you Nicola. Tonight I'm going to enjoy a nice beer.
  20. It's the a$$holes that think they are immune to catching never mind passing it on that are causing the increase of cases. That especially applies to the ones meeting in large numbers after travelling hundreds of miles to sit in a London pub to watch a football match. You seem to have all the answers. Have you thought about telling the government? You should give them a wee call.
  21. You might be right about that. I am hopeful that the UK government have realised that we are the plague pit of Europe right now despite a year of restrictions and over 90% compliance on mask wearing. They clearly don't work. There is data out there on NHS staff illnesses showing that FFP3 masks DO seem to work. These shitty blue paper things and especially fabric masks are just useless though.
  22. It's all pretty vague stuff baz. "Need" is not the same as "legally required". I can't for the life of me understand why they just can't issue a very clear statement about them. "Mask wearing will remain a legally enforced requirement on public transport and in all retail outlets until further notice." It's not asking too much at this stage. Oh and as for the article, it's not a "face covering" because it doesn't cover the face. It's a mask because it masks the nose and mouth. We don't need to be spun any of their bullshit and patronising user-friendly phrases. Looks like I'm going to have to tolerate being a law breaker for a bit longer but it's hard to imagine this continuing for much longer if England ditches them in 2 weeks time.
  23. Fantastic win for Raducanu. Going to be fascinating to see how far she can get. Looking tough for Norrie right now though.
  24. And that's 18 year old Emma Raducanu through to the 3rd round beating the 2019 French Open runner-up on the way. Not bad for someone who has just sat her A levels. So 4 Brits in the 3rd round - Murray, Evans, Norrie and Raducanu. Very tough draws for all of them as you'd expect at this stage. Evans looks to have the best chance of getting through and will play a lower ranked player in the 4th round if he does so. He looks a pretty good bet for the quarter finals. Anything else will be a bonus but all 3 remaining players are clearly fighters so who knows. If they had been fit and free of covid, we could reasonably have expected both Konta and Kyle Edmund to have been in the 3rd round with them. On the whole, British tennis is looking pretty good at the moment.
  25. And that's Cameron Norrie also into the 3rd round to face Federer or Gasquet. Evans has a great chance to follow them both later. Less sure about Raducanu as she's only 18 and has her 2nd round match today. Getting 4 players into the 3rd round would be a good achievement.
