Shull asked me to pin this thread which I think is a good idea.

Excellent idea, Div.

Had to let ma dad know - he was shocked and stunned at the news. Saw the late Mr Purves at Love Street in December and said that he looked well.

RIP JP, you will be sorely missed :(

From yesterdays Paisley Daily Express...

Fitting tribute to a popular Saints director

Hundreds of mourners packed Martyrs' Church in Paisley to pay their respects to Jim Purves, the popular and well-known director of St Mirren Football Club.

And there was a fitting tribute to the man who had supported the team man and boy for more than 50 years when the organist played the tune, 'When The Saints Go Marching In' as his coffin was carried from the church after the emotional service. There will be a further tribute to Mr Purves, who died at the age of 64, this Saturday when a minutes silence will be held in his memory before St Mirren's league match against Dundee United. Joining the mourners were members of Mr Purves' family and the entire St Mirren squad, including manager Gus MacPherson and chairman Stewart Gilmour. There were tears as the Rev. George Prentice, minister emeritus at Martyrs', spoke of the love which Mr Purves had for his family and they for him. But there was pride too, when the minister told of the dedicated service which Mr Puves had given to the people of Paisley, where he owned pharmacies in Causeyside Street and Neilston Road in the town.

Mr Prentice recalled Mr Purves' pride when he was appointed a director of his beloved St Mirren. He first supported the team from the Love Street terracings while a pupil at the John Neilson Institution more than half a century ago.

Also remembered in the eulogy was Mr Purves' service to Martyrs' Church, where he was an elder for many years - and his work for charitable projects as a member of Paisley St James Masonic Lodge No.1116.

Mr Prentice described Mr Purves' love of sport, recalling his time as a wicket-keeper with Kelburne Cricket Club and a member of Paisley Golf Club.

"We all admired Jim and he was a wonderful family man, who also served the Paisley community well." said Mr Prentice. Mourners stood in silent tribute, with their own memories of Mr Purves, as his coffin was carried to a waiting hearse to the accompaniment of the 'When The Saints Go Marching In' tune which he sang himself on hundreds of occasions as he watched his favourite Buddies. A collection was held at the church door for the Beatson Oncology Centre, Glasgow, whrer Mr Purves was looked after with so much care and dedication during his final illness.

Mr Purves, who lived in Elderslie, is survived by his widow, Evelyn, daughter Jennifer and son Alistair. The committal took place in private at Woodside Crematorium.
