Bud the Baker
Saw the documentary about them last night. That Karen Carpenter was not a bad lloking lassie when she was healthy and had a cracking voice as well. Shame the way she went. Underrated band - certainly the early work (69-73) contains some great tracks and unexpected gems like Goodbye To Love, Tony Peluso's solo on that track is frequently found in lists of Top errr Guitar Solos. Albums like Now and Then (1973) combine a mix of original work plus interpretations of Bacharach/David numbers done out of a sense of fun and not as a cynical marketing ploy. As Richard Carpenter's Quaalude addiction became more prevalent the quality took a dip but they were still occasionally able to hit the spot eg Calling Occupants of Interplanetery Craft. Well overdue for a bit of critical respect. Edited April 11, 2007 by Bud the Baker
