Murray is atypical for the UK - his grandfather was an optician who had played professional football which meant he was not allowed to play tennis at an official level.
His mum, The Blessed Judy, was successful at amateur level and tried to go pro before deciding to go to Uni - he's a complete outlier.
It's a middle class game and aside from players representing the UK through "grandfather rules" the country has an extremely small pool from which to choose.

Totally unconnected but I was reading that if a player waits until the draw is made before, erm, withdrawing s/he gets to keep 50% of the prize money for R1 which at Wimbers this year is £40k.
