I’ve been following this debacle in Private Eye for at least a decade. And this distraction about a very few fraudsters and thieves was brought up many times to excuse the appalling treatment meted out by the PO. The only people who might currently “benefit” from the recent Govt and PO about-turns are those who were (to quote the govt) “wrongfully convicted”. ALL honest people who were treated abominably. And just in case an odd one pops up that was truly perfidious… “Business minister Kevin Hollinrake told the Commons that sub-postmasters will be asked to sign a statement to declare they did not commit the crime before receiving compensation. He said: “As far as possible we want to avoid guilty people walking away with hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money, but we cannot make the provision of compensation subject to a detailed examination of guilt.” He added: “All we ask is that as part of their claims of compensation postmasters sign a statement to the effect they did not commit the crimes of which they are accused. “Anyone subsequently found to have signed such a statement untruthfully will be putting themselves at risk of prosecution of fraud." An exaggeration about “hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money” not being wasted… and total silence about the millions already ploughed into ignoring the problem, trying to make it go away plus court losses, loss of business and wasting PO and Govt time and money.
