  1. Big Drop in Heart Attack Admissions Under Lockdown Around 5000 heart attack patients in England may have missed out on life saving hospital treatment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new research published in The Lancet. According to the study led by the University of Oxford, only two thirds of the expected number of patients with heart attacks were admitted to hospital between mid February and the end of March this year. One of the authors, Chris Gale, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Leeds' School of Medicine, commented: "One of the unintended consequences of the 'stay at home' message during the peak of the pandemic is that fewer people were seeking help for medical emergencies such as a heart attack." Prof Gale added: "People will have died or developed heart failure as a result of not seeking treatment for their heart attack." However, Prof John Martin, professor of cardiovascular medicine, University College London, suggested via the Science Media Centre: "There may be another explanation for these findings: there may have been a real reduction in heart attacks. There is some evidence that heart attacks might be precipitated by inflammatory illnesses which cause increase in blood coagulation which may lead to clots in the coronary artery. It has been observed that the isolation of lockdown has led to a decrease in non-COVID respiratory infections (data must be checked). Therefore, the decrease in heart attack presentation in hospital may be due to a real reduction in heart attacks due to the beneficial effects of lockdown." This suggests that lockdown is maybe not the evil you seem to think it is.
  2. In my experience people in a panic are not thinking about breathing properly. If they are hyperventilating they will blow off CO2 whether they are mouth or nose breathing. Can be easily dealt with by rebreathing into a paper bag, allowing the CO2 level to rise. I have never found that wearing a mask causes me to mouth breathe any more than I normally do.
  3. Hyperventilation(or overbreathing) is a well recognised accompaniment of anxiety attacks and will result in a reduced CO2 level in the bloodstream leading to pins and needles in the hands and feet, which reinforces the anxiety. This will happen whether a mask is worn or not. The problem is not the mask but the anxiety.
  4. Carlaw's statement is incredible. You, presumably, are incredulous. (Pedant alert!)
  5. Indeed. I heard a member of the scientific panel on Radio 4 this morning say that they had been asked to estimate a worst case scenario!
  6. "An anti-euthanasia campaigner last night said he suspected that the spike was evidence that many people had been put on end-of-life protocols or ‘pathways’." Perhaps this was because Covid-19, particularly in the elderly, does bring the end of life.

  8. Presumably that's why Greenhill ,Road has been rescheduled! ☺️
  9. When I was a boy I always wondered if Suchard was a misspelling of sook hard. 😄
  10. What you fail to recognise is the final paragraph which states that:- "Conclusions The primary reason for mandating the wearing of face masks is to protect dental personnel from airborne pathogens. This review has established that face masks are incapable of providing such a level of protection. Unless the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, national and provincial dental associations and regulatory agencies publically admit this fact, they will be guilty of perpetuating a myth which will be a disservice to the dental profession and its patients. It would be beneficial if, as a consequence of the review, all present infection control recommendations were subjected to the same rigorous testing as any new clinical intervention. Professional associations and governing bodies must ensure the clinical efficacy of quality improvement procedures prior to them being mandated. It is heartening to know that such a trend is gaining a momentum which might reveal the inadequacies of other long held dental infection control assumptions. Surely, the hallmark of a mature profession is one which permits new evidence to trump established beliefs. In 1910, Dr. C. Chapin, a public health pioneer, summarized this idea by stating, “We should not be ashamed to change our methods; rather, we should be ashamed not to do so.” 36 Until this occurs, as this review has revealed, dentists have nothing to fear by unmasking. OH" What relevance does this have to the wearing of masks by the general population?
  11. This seems to give the lie to Pseudonyms claim that masks are ineffective in reducing the transmission of viruses, whether seasonal or not( I don't think masks can distinguish the two).
  12. Maybe Neilson and Budge know that is the case.
  13. I think Shakespeare said"hoist".
  14. AFAIK they were not quarantined on arrival in NZ but were allowed to visit a dying relative. I have no idea how long they have been in NZ but there is obviously an opportunity for further spread.
  15. I wish both of you would give it a rest!
  16. If you decide to buy a season ticket today, which I think very unlikely, you would do so in the full knowledge that fans are unlikely to be admitted for some time. If you expect a refund you are barking up the wrong tree.
  17. I don't think there were many black people in Scotland in the 14th century.
  18. the headline sounds wonderful but "Blazenka Divjak, Croatian education minister, speaking in a press conference at the end of the meeting of ministers, said the lack of significant increase in cases or any other negative impact should also be seen in the context of the special measures taken to make schools as safe as possible. She said: “What has been emphasised very strongly is that these schools [have] very highly guarded conditions like smaller groups than in normal classes, usually groups of around 15 and … very close cooperation with health ministries and epidemiological services on a national level to provide schools and teachers and parents with very detailed recommendations on how to deal with the new situation. “So far we haven’t heard anything negative about the reopening of schools but it is probably too early to have final conclusions on that.” The article also says that the vast majority of the schools have been open(in this very limited way) for only a fortnight.
  19. Does this mean you will have to starve from mid-November till Christmas? 😄
  20. Very embarrassing for you!
  21. Stop banging this drum! Those who buy season tickets are well aware that they might not get into the ground and are still prepared to pay up front. What is difficult to understand about this?
  22. Are you the only individual who thought that fans would be allowed in at the start of the season?
  23. Have you ever in your life admitted that you were wrong?
