  1. It wasn’t recommended that we went the other side of the railway line, that’s where a lot of the wooden houses were. I believe they’re all gone now. Another landmark I remember is the Japanese Museum, also a heavy Korean influence in Sakhalin. https://www.rbth.com/arts/2015/05/23/japanese_legacy_lives_on_in_sakhalin_46291.html Some of my colleagues started a Celtic SC and had a flag made. The logo on the flag was....... wait for it......”If Yuzhno The History”
  2. Yuzhno is more developed now by all accounts since my time there. They have a floodlit Ski resort which is exceptional which is used by hikers and mountain bikers alike in the summer. Gagarin Park was our choice for Sunday libations and Shashlik in the day, but they now have a ban on drinking in public there so I imagine it won’t have the same atmosphere as it was during my stint. The winters can be brutal and I remember the eve of the LC Final against SEVCO (Glasgow Rangers back then) we all got a call to say not to leave our accommodation due to adverse weather warnings. 3 feet of snow fell over a 24 hour period but the local cooncil roads department worked tirelessly to get the roads cleared in jig time. Many good memories of my time there.
  3. I was based in Yuzhno on a 7 (week) x 3 rotation. I thought the flights in and out of Yuzhno were bad enough without that added on train journey. Some of the site based guys would be on a real downer before heading to Nogliki, you’d think they were taking the long walk to the gallows.
  4. Are you referring to the 15 hours on a good day Nogliki to Yuzhno journey? Lucky for me, no.
  5. Well there’s a signed St Mirren top hanging proudly in the Mishka bar in city of Yuzhno, Sakhalin island. Donated by my good self.
  6. I posted it twice as I type with a stammer (that was another poor joke) Nope, I totally agree. Both Hitler and Stalin were a pair of bad bastards. Both nations have moved on significantly (though I’ve never been to Germany) since those dark days. I would say that anti semitism is still bubbling away under the surface since the aforementioned days of Hitler. That’s something I don’t understand. Anyway, we do digress from the initial topic chap but always more than happy to discuss politics and history.
  7. Have you ever been to Russia or interacted with Russians. I’m assuming by your response that you’re an expert on modern Russian history? However. Just under 9 million military personnel died during WW2 with total Russian deaths at around 19 million, so I’m not sure your reply is accurate as to what the Nazi’s did. My initial comment was on my findings from spending years there on the Russian people and Russia in general as it is today.

  9. I mentioned a few weeks ago on another topic where a poster had asked for good book recommendations. I’d strongly suggest reading “War With Russia” by Stephen F Cohen, it’ll certainly get you thinking. Mr Cohen is a Scholar and Professor of Russian history and politics. It covers the “New Cold War” of 2014/2015, Syria, Ukraine, Obama and many others in the American and Russian governments, and the American propaganda machine.
  10. Debacle it certainly was. To be honest (and this is my opinion) Russia had nothing to do with that. It’s strange how the Skirpal’s are free to travel back and forth to Moscow. From someone that spent many years in Russia, I wouldn’t listen to the negative propaganda spouted by the media and individuals in the government. The Russians I’d say are very nice people.
  11. It was meant as a joke BTW, maybe in bad taste but a joke none the less. Obviously what happened to that poor girl was terrible and the truth may never be known. I’m pretty sure I’m not the first nor the last that’ll tell a risqué joke. So I apologise if I upset anyone.
  12. Cheers chap, couldn’t quite hear you the first time as I didn’t have my glasses on. [emoji87]
  13. Only professional football team in Britain to be called St Mirren [emoji87]
  14. With the benefit of replays and different camera angles, Flynn (I think) pulled his hand behind his back, not much else he could do. Obika. Couldn’t get a Rizla between his feet and the ground when he jumps from a standing start. Nervy finish but I’d take that every week. That’s the type of game we’d have lost last season after going ahead. Well done Saints.
  15. That “Token gesture” will more than pay for itself if he performs to the level we know he can, and we avoid the playoffs this season.
  16. Agree with what you’re saying, but I guess money had a big part in on Morgan’s part.
  17. Checkout hesgoals.com chap, it’s listed on there.
  18. Can’t believe this thread has been going for over two hours and the personal insults haven’t started yet. Give it time I guess.
  19. If you remember, his original conviction was quashed after serving months in jail. The recent conviction was for “potential to cause anxiety” by standing outside a court asking already convicted pedophiles what they thought of the verdict. This is something that is seen outside courts basically on a daily basis by most of the MSM. No journalist has ever been jailed for contempt of court.
  20. Silky Ilkay........ I can hear the chants from the terracing noo.
