Which Player From Our Academy Will We Let Go For Buttons Next
athens-saint replied to norrie82's topic in General Nonsense
Our youth system has been anything but a "disaster". The youngsters have and always will be the mainstay of our team. The problem is that there is no money to be made in developing young players these days. How Hamilton can punt players for 1m I will never know!? (Hendrie? Dodgy Big Sam?). Shame, but football is a different game these days. On a side note, I see McGinn thanked SMFC for the last thirteen (13) years. Sad it ended that way...10k per year! Makes you want to cry. Simple Verdict: Modern football is shite. PS. Last decent player we lost to Hibs was Lavety and he went for around 120k too, if I recall correctly. -
Official Burney Twitter account also confirms 1 year loan deal. He`s obviously good enough that they want to keep him! Welcome, Luke!

Douglas McNeil has confirmed on Twitter that: "St.Mirren won`t be offering deals to any of the new triallists who featured against Burnley!" "New" indicates to me that those who played only v Burney are the ones who are off.

Bassett Og Is It The Best Ever?
athens-saint replied to DougJamie's topic in General St. Mirren Discussion
Jamie Fullarton once scored a belter for United at Tannadice. -
Looking at the BBC today has left me questioning the long-term sustainability of full-time Scottish football. Considering recent events some of the "football" decisions are a little shortsighted. The implosion of Scottish football (armageddon?) never happened. We can survive... But all of our clubs need to be prudent....or part-time football surely beckons. I don`t claim to be an economist but I do wonder what kind of people are running Scottish football clubs. For example, from today`s news: 1. Rangers signing Danny Wilson. RFC reportedly on the brink again. Tangled up with Ashley. Leaving an SPFL club for the Championship. It`s Rangers...I get it...but they must be offering him a big contract in return. High risk... 2. Kilmarnock giving a three year contract to Jamie MacDonald. A 3 year deal seems excessive to me.... That is a long term investment in an average player. High risk... I understand how frustrating it is to sit around waiting for a new manager and new players. But I`d rather SMFC didn`t follow suit and made deals only that make financial sense to us. If Gow is all we can afford then that must be our reality.....1 year deals make sense to me. Low risk is what makes sense to me.

Usually I`m not one for just saying we should sign randoms but... S. McGinn released by Dundee today. Would be nice, eh?

St. Mirren Looking For A New Manager
athens-saint replied to mikesmfc's topic in General St. Mirren Discussion
Hendrie: imaginative appointment (back to back promotions with Berwick and Alloa) Champions in style. SUCCESS Coughlin: lazy internal appointment Awful season. FAILURE Gus: convenient internal appointment Champions but dreary to watch. SUCCESS Lennon: imaginative appointment (back to back promotions with Cowden) SUCCESS Highest league finish + Cup win. SUCCESS Craig: lazy internal appointment (backstabber?) Awful season. FAILURE Teale: convenient internal appointment. Motherwell 5-0, Ross County 3-0 - Make your own minds up! FAILURE? MY VERDICT In the past a left field approach has worked wonders. Making a difficult choice has more often than not led to success. We should take a punt on a manager from the lower leagues. I`n not sure about Murray. What about James Fowler or Darren Young (if they`d take it)??? -

Is Sgg's Position Still Tenable?
athens-saint replied to Lord Pityme's topic in General St. Mirren Discussion
We are now relegated and a new challenge beckons in division 1. Time to stop pointing fingers and move on. SG has made mistakes granted. But let us look to next season with a positive attitude. I'm tired of the abuse aimed at SG and Teale...and even Sadlier. Mistakes have been made but I've always been told to focus on the solution. My hope is that next year we will regroup and shake off the dead wood. If we have already identified targets then the work is being done to prepare for next year. Whoever leads us out will do so with their best intentions. Mon the Saints! -
OS updated with comments from JT. Looks like the rags ran the article through "google translation". 2 + 2 = 5. MON THE SAINTS!

Did we pull the plug on the Storey loan or did the player not fancy it?

Signed for Forest Green Rovers!

I have to admit it's hard to be positive these days.

Obviously we ALL hope and pray that Yoann Arquin will score on his debut Saturday. This got me wondering about the success rate of other SMFC debutants. Can anyone remember any Saints players who have have scored on their debut? I remember Mark Yardley scored one and set up another versus Hamilton in a storming debut at Firhill. Didn`t Alex Burns also score in his first game? Is there anyone else?
