Going up the town to see the lights was always a highlight when I was a boy.

Abbey Close
This weeks image from the Heritage Centre is of the Christmas lights at and from Abbey Close, c.1965. The 'Close' was absolutely full of illuminations with various features - a Spaceship, a Maypole, a Caterpillar, performing Sea Lions, Ladybirds Etc., but the best feature was possibly the wee 'Living Room' where you'd put a donation into a collection box (Provosts Coal Fund ?) to light the Fire and the 'Big Light'. The whole river, from Abbey Bridge (Bridge Street) to Abercorn Bridge (Old Sneddon Street), was illuminated with garlands of lights strung across, Dunn Square was ablaze with lights, and the gardens areas of Smithhills Street full of lit and decorated features too, and featured a view of an Spot lit Paisley Prison. On top of all of that each of the Street light covers was coloured with each a different Colour, as were, as many will remember, the Four faces of the Town Hall Clock. Today........ ?

Attending the Minors on a Saturday was the law. :thumbs2

It’s as simple as ABC
We are the boys and girls well known as
Minors of the ABC
And every Saturday we line up
To see the films we like
And shout aloud with glee
We love to laugh and have a sing-song
Just a happy crowd are we
We’re all pals together
We’re minors of the ABC.

What a building. With a bit of imagination, it could still be something special.............................suggestions?

Paisley Prison
Paisley Jail as captured at Christmas 1964 by Paisley photographer the late Harry Hornby. Taken from Smithills Street it was built in 1822 and closed as a prison in 1888. Part of it served as the Police Station until it was knocked down 1968. It survived a number of attempt at demolition due to its poor condition and cost of maintainance, and having being saved previously by the outbreak of WWII, it did eventually succumb to Town Planners in the latter half of the 1960's

During the Paisley Fair, the Xmas lights reappeared at Rothesay.

The flamingo ones were the ones I remember seeing in both locations.
