Wilbur
According to a Sunday Times article today Fergie claims to have gone on as a sub for St Mirren in a friendly match while he was our manager so he could punch an opponent who was persistently fouling our young players. Can any of our older contributors confirm or throw some light on this incident ?
sm74
I've heard this story before, Abercrombie talked about it in his book. Think it was away on tour somewhere obscure.
scrappy coco
I'm pretty sure that's what aber said in his autobiography... but frank mcgarvey gave a different story in the paper during the week....

billyg
Just dug it out of Abers book ImageUploadedByBlack & White Army1382876523.913620.jpg ImageUploadedByBlack & White Army1382876539.992391.jpg Yeah , that was more or less the story that was doing the rounds at the time and no-one was surprised , Fergie was an absolute headcase. My first close-up of him in action was a Palmerston in early '75 , we were leading 1-0 which was a big result for us , the ball was pumped into our area again and John Young headed clear but to everyone's amazement the ref pointed to the spot. Fergie wasn't having it , he flew out of the dugout and the sweary tirade was unbelievable , he was wearing a long black coat and our physio was trying to calm him down but as the physio grabbed his coat sleeve Fergie attempted to walk down the touchline to get closer to the ref, result was his coat came right off and was lying on the deck. By this time , the physio and the subs were trying to restrain him . Then , Peter Dickson missed the pen and Fergie continued to remonstrate with the ref before being ushered back to the dugout. Always wondered what would have happened had Dickson scored !
Bud the Baker
On Pointless recently that Richard guy that knows everything said that the official line about Ferguson getting sacked was because he swore at a female . There seems to be about 101 reasons why Ferguson was bagged. Maybe someone should publish a book with all the different reasons why he may have been bagged with the profits going to charity! IIRC it was Jim Clunie who swore in front of not at a Director's wife after we'd beaten Celtic. As for Ferguson it's quite complicated Celtic got rid of Jock Stein and appointed Billy McNeil who was Aberdeen's manager. Aberdeen wanted Ferguson who then went on a campaign of insubordination to get away, it kinda backfired in that he got sacked. He then took us to an Industrial Tribunal where he lost. He was infamously described by the Chairman of the Tribunal as being "unfit to manage a football club". Ferguson seems to have decided it was time to move on and it was kinda inevitable. Our BoD would have done better to take whatever compensation was going for despite a brief thumbs up in the Centenary video he has been pretty cool in his attitude to us since he left. **************** I have spoken to English football fans on a couple of occasions who seem to regard us as bumpkins who didn't know a great manager from a hole in the ground but when I explain the circumstances behind the sacking they say yeah that sounds like Fergie! shull
Aye, Fergie has been a bit cool with us since. He brought his Man Utd team up to Scotland to play money spinning friendlies against many Clubs. Not us.

uhura
Who else can remember this one. Rangers v Aberdeen at Ibrox, Fergie is the Dons mangager and he's in the director's box. During the game somebody hooks him, commotion ensues and the puncher gets away. The press are all over it but by Monday the best they can offer is that the perp is back home in The States. He'd been over for a holiday and one of his big-shot pals had had him along as his guest.
Isle Of Bute Saint
There are quite a few posters on this forum who watched Saints weekly before Fergie arrived. Billyg myself and a good few others used to go to home and away games together before going to the dancing most Saturday nights these were the day’s , magic day’s. We were a dismal club lost in space. Fergie laid the foundations to put the club into greatness for a good few years. He is the king of managers absolutely nothing to prove. You wonder what he would have achieved had he stayed with Saints from a supporters point of view , bottom line he was always going to move to a bigger club. By far and away the best years supporting the club and a good few seasons after he left. When you played the old firm you never went to the game thinking we will get beat. It was we are going to win. How times have changed.
