Where's the contradiction? 40 MP's isolated on their own, like the Lib Dems were during Thatcher, Major, Blairs and Browns governments won't wield any power. There was a good point made on This Week last night - I think by Michael Portillo - when he said that if Labour hold a minority government having refused a deal with the SNP, would the SNP really want to be seen to be voting down a Labour budget, or bringing down a Labour Government? How much damage would a repeat of 1979 do to the SNP?
Everyone is entitled to vote as they wish, and if you think your local SNP candidate will do a better job for you than the other candidates then fair enough. I just hope that those intending on voting for SNP without engaging their brain about what Full Fiscal Autonomy might mean in Scotland, or without considering where we'd be now as an Independent country had we let Salmond have control of the purse strings after the referendum, don't live to regret their decision and I hope that those who are voting SNP thinking they're still voting Labour into power don't feel conned by the time May 2015 is out.

Thatcher crushed the SNP - how can you argue with that? The fact that some 25 years after Thatcher left office the SNP are now doing a bit better doesn't change the events of 1979 - 1990 when Thatcher won up to THREE TIMES more votes than the SNP in elections in a country where she was supposed to be unbelievably unpopular and supposedly - according to Natsi propaganda - the Prime Minister that no-one in Scotland voted for.
The only comedy value in all of this is that STILL some deluded dafties want to argue that Thatcher was unpopular in Scotland, whilst boasting that the SNP - who have NEVER received more votes than Thatcher in any one election in Scotland - are on some sort of unstoppable rise. I can only assume that the drugs out your way do indeed work and your brain is absolute mush!

First off - thanks. I'm sure you are a decent bloke too.
Secondly - what the f**k? First off 55% of Scots wanted Scotland to remain in the UK, 45% wanted to leave the UK. The majority won - that is democracy in action. We've got that already. If the thuggish wee lassie gets more votes than all the other candidates including the Labour statesman who has represented Paisley rather well over the years then she will become an MP. That too is democracy, just as it will be if Douglas Alexander manages to hold on to his seat by getting more votes than all the other candidates.
Thirdly - we can also see Freedom of Speech in action here too. Mhairi Black was able to say that she wanted to stick the nut in her political opponents without any backlash from the police or from the political establishment. Instead I and I suppose many others from outside of Paisley look on a bit incredulous that the residents of Paisley might actually be stupid enough to put a daft wee lassie into the House of Commons to represent them and to fight for their needs.

Socialism is a failed experiment. No-one outside of the Scottish Central Belt believes any different.
Anyway other than winning the election, returning David Cameron to Downing Street, seeing the SNP isolated and with no influence, and seeing Scotland benefit from even more jobs within a stable UK economy the result I'll be looking for will be to see if the SNP can manage to be as popular in Scotland as the Thatcher government was in 1979.

    Aw shucks. Thanks....
Thatcher got 916,155 votes in Scotland in the 1979 General Election. A figure the SNP have so far only ever been able to dream about. Despite the regular claims of Nationalists that no-one in Scotland ever wanted a Thatcher government the SNP's best General Election result in their history was in October 1974. when they got 839,617. Indeed in each one of Thatchers three General Election victories twice as many Scots voted Conservative than voted SNP.
In 2010 the SNP only managed to win 491,386 votes so for all that the SNP claim Scots didn't want a Thatcher government it's clear that even fewer Scots wanted the SNP to represent them in Westminster. It's also worth noting that in 2010 - where supposedly there were more pandas in Edinburgh zoo that Tories in Scotland, the Conservatives managed to get 412,855 votes in Scotland. Not that far off what the SNP got.
If the SNP manage to beat Thatchers Scottish election result in 1979 I might be impressed. Otherwise I think we can write off Nicola Sturgeon as a leader Scots didn't want to represent them at Westminster - using the SNP's own measure ofcourse.

The McCoist thing must be the biggest wind up on here in years :-) Gave me a right laugh when I read it.
On GT having another year and not being able to afford to pay him off, can we afford to have him at the helm? The hard core are losing interest, never mind the fair weather fans. The 2 biggest games against Motherwell and Ross County we were utterly devoid of passion, never mind anything else, that is a must for a manger, to be able to motivate his team - even wee angry could do that!
The Jimmy Calderwood shout is a good one, the guys been round the block and I can't see one of his teams performing the way we have done recently.

It's not as straight forward as that Holly. They've always been a single issue party so pigeon holing them into any sort of category is ridiculous. Homophobe, Gordon Wilson, the party leader throughout the 70's - for example - is possibly just to the right of Nigel Farage in terms of policy, whilst the likes of Jim Sillars, Margo McDonald and Winnie Ewing were all pretty intrinsically to the left of the political spectrum. The fact that laterly Sillars and McDonald were pushed more and more out of the party would perhaps be a clue to how the main body of the party works and where it stands currently.
There is a huge amount of opportunism within the party right now. It's easy to pledge an end to austerity in the UK when you are never going to be in control of the budget, it's much harder to defend that claim though when you see the SNP record in government in Scotland.

We always have had a voice.... we will be sending down the same number of MPs as we always do. Remember SNP don't speak for all of Scotland, they won't represent the majority of votes cast although may send down the majority of seats.

Also, could one of our older posters educate me please. Have the SNP always played so far to the left or is this simply a void they can fill given labour since Blair?
