faraway saint
I'm trying to catch up with FRicky on starting threads.................... John Higgins already in the final, Mark Williams right in with a shout of getting there as well. I was very firmly in the "young players" rule snooker, looks like I was wrong. Where's my cue? linwood buddie
The days of Higgins , Reardon , White , Davis and Hendry were for me the best and I don't watch it now

Maybe an age thing, and just don't seem to find it worth the effort any more. Still a slight interest because Higgins is Scottish but there's no Scottish players, that I'm aware of, coming through to make my tune in on a regular basis. C'mon Williams. linwood buddie
The Hurricane and Jimmy White were the ones I enjoyed watching , Davis I watched when I couldn't sleep he was sure to make me tired.
faraway saint
To give Hawkins credit, he's, seemingly, a regular semi finalist at the Crucible. One of these "faceless" players to me. Probably unfair as I said, I don't watch much snooker these days. I'm too bust watching Sky Sports and BT Sport, which seems to upset some people. Very unfair. There's more to snooker, and many sports, than the "glamour shots". Davis was one of THE best players ever. His long pots were superb, break building and tactical knowledge were top class. Sure, not Jimmy White but a winner. O'Sullivan combines both, got it all, IMO. faraway saint
Hawkins seems, to me,to be shitting himself. Maybe that's why he's the perennial semi finalist?

faraway saint
Hawkins................................BOTTLE merchant, just snookered himself for no reason. Superb credit to him, pointed put to the ref he was snookered, the blue slightly "rocked" to let him see the red, class. Things change, there's plenty of players since Higgins to prove that they were world class with flair. Also, as I said, there's much more to snooker than just potting balls. It's a classic mind games sport as much as being able to thrash a ball into a pocket. Same as football, superb defending, and goal keeping , is mainly forgotten, it's a skill and I've seen plenty of good 0-0 games. Cornwall_Saint
I didn't ever see the likes of the Hurricane, or Davis and White at their best, that was before my time. One of the things that amazes me is the lifespan at the top end of the game. Granted it doesn't have the physicality of other sports, but there are guys still around now who I remember watching as a child 15-20 years ago. O'Sullivan, Higgins, Williams, Murphy, Fu and Maguire are all currently Top 20 and are all names I remember from my younger days.
faraway saint
Final starts today on BBC2 at 2 O'clock. Both players, being ancient, will do well to stay awake, best of 35 frames is a long match for anyone. C'mon Higgins.

Hendry certainly was superb to watch. Sure Higgins was "watchable", but not always in a good way. Depends what you want from watching snooker/sport. Maybe it's because i was just a wean when he was winning i lost interest in snooker after the rise of Stephen Hendry, same with the darts, kinda went the same way. People are queuing up for tickets for next years tournament already. Seems it's more popular than I thought. First frame to some Welsh bloke. faraway saint
Welsh bloke 5-3 Higgins. Watched some of the early frames, Williams was easily the better player. Higgins, I would imagine, will be happy to be only 2 frames down.

faraway saint
WHAT a finish from Higgins. Williams was 63-0 up, only needing this frame to win the match, misses a pink, Higgins steps in with a 65 clearance. Class. 17-16, superb snooker. faraway saint
Williams, to his credit, has a 70 break in 34th frame, match almost certainly over. Well done to 2 old guys. Night night from me.
