It's unhelpful and inappropriate to be chucking around words like "heroes" when you are describing exceptionally well paid members of staff.
Most of the people who are holding the country together right now are those who are paid the least and treated with disrespect by society - cleaners, those involved in food production and delivery etc.
When this is all done and dusted these people don't need to be patronised by applause. They need to be paid a wage which reflects their importance to the nation.
I'm hugely hopeful that this group of workers can find some way of ensuring that happens once this is finished.

I work in maintenance for the water industry. We talk about "essential services" but let's not forget we can't do our jobs if we can't purchase the parts to repair the pumps and filters that keep the water pure and the sewage system functioning.  Thank goodness we have had word from some suppliers saying they will be open for business with stringent rules in place to protect us and their staff. The numbers of people who could be classed as essential is far more than some might think initially.

Always wish I could see the St Mirren 4-2 Celtic game, where Scanlon score from 176 yards!!!

I'm hearing that a bill is going through the House of Lords for self employed people.
Looks like they are going to offer 80% of earnings averaged over the last 3 years up to about £2.5k-ish providing you are not earning at the moment. Not sure if that includes (probably not) the current financial year which is about to end in a fortnight.
I think that is perfectly fair and around what employees are going to get.

Did it never occur that he was found innocent because he WAS innocent and the main reason for no forensics or corroboration was simply due to the fact he was just a typical chauvinistic asshole who never overstepped the mark?

Scraping barrels is essential.....................for the people that need the barrels.
I try not to scrap them, costly.
Do I need to explain EVERYTHING to you?

281 now in the UK throws it off Italy's like for like numbers quite significantly.
Think it will stay below Italy's curve to be honest. Lombardy was the absolute epicentre of the outbreak. There is a relatively large population of Chinese expats in Bergamo and the first infected were allowed to walk about undetected for several days amongst a very old population before anything was detected. The numbers in Italy if removing Lombardy and the two bordering regions actually suggest that the wider situation isn't out of control.
There was no such epicentre in the UK. That's why I don't think the rate will mirror or be worse than Italy. Either way, it's still going to make for some horrible numbers.

Just been announced by John Swinney that pupils should not attend school to complete coursework.
Why he listened to such an irresponsible suggestion from the SQA in the first place is a mystery.

They are required. If they don't volunteer, then there is no one to look after vulnerable pupils or children of key workers. So any key workers in the NHS would have to stay at home to look after their kids.

Work wise I’ve been working from home for the last two weeks and the wife for the last week. Miracle number one is that we haven’t ripped each other’s heads off yet. My employer (a bank) has now told everyone who has remote access to work from home so looks like I’m stuck here for a while. I can work from home fine with the only obvious thing I can’t do being face to face client meetings.
Socially, we were supposed to be flying out to Buenos Aires for 6 nights on Thursday just past. Had been looking forward to it so much but is what it is I suppose. We got full refunds on our flights and hotel so could’ve been worse.
Supposed to be doing the West Highland Way for the 4th time at the beginning of May. Not really sure how that one will play out. Won’t I suppose if I can’t get off this effin rock.  End of May booked for New York. That looks f**ked as well I suppose. What I shite year this is going to be for everyone.
On the upside, oor pubs aren’t shut yet, so we’re going down tonight for dinner while we still can. Only a matter of time till they shut.
    Yours sincerely,
    The Reverend I.M. Jolly.

    Cheers.
It would be so simple to put legislative protection into place for people who actually want a flexible contact like that.

I also make sure anyone on a zero hours contact gets a full seven hours per year pro-rata holiday pay. They earned it.

That should be enshrined in law.

Likewise... our charity has about five months of reserves.
We have also had to cancel all of our major fundraisers.
Shutting down until told it is safe to reopen was a no brainer.
I have a responsibility, not only to my service users and their carers... but to my staff and volunteers.
Staff are instructed to practice social distancing or, if high risk, self isolate.
They are also on full wage for as long as we can afford it.
We are going to need them coming out of this crisis.
As a wee aside... that also includes people on zero hours contracts! You know... the much maligned and abused employment practice!
I have two people on a zero hours contract.
Their studies and employment elsewhere means they are not flexible or able to accept a working contract.
i give them shifts regularly though.
For the next twelve weeks... even if not working... they are on average earnings!
They are part of my core team and deserve no less.
Just saying... zero hours contracts are often abused.... but not always a bad thing!
