Great to read through this thread especially the bits during the game from Bluto. Well done sir!
I was almost glad Hearts scored early as I had more or less resigned myself to us being pumped at that stage. We had frozen and things looked VERY bad. But we have got a handful of big game players at the club, matchwinners. I said before the game that theseguys would be the ones that would lift us and by f**k they did that! That goal before half time changed the whole game, got us back into the game when we looked done for, it gave Hearts a kick in the nuts as they knew they had pummelled us and there we were level. Then Thompsons goal right after half time more or less screwed up any plans Hearts had for us. And the third...ooft!
Was there in 87 and while it was wonderful, it wasnt as good a game. Yesterday was a fantastic cup final, absolutely wonderful and one that none of us will EVER forget. And its worth mentioning Hearts fans yesterday. They were fantastic before and after the game. Just two sets of fans there for a good day out and hoping their team would win. No nastiness whatsoever. That just about restored my faith in football. And cheers to the Hearts punter who gave me a can of beer out his cargo on the way home. A gent!!

    Agree with the above.
The Hearts fans on that Jambos Kickback forum or whatever its called are a bunch of utter tubes but the guys we met around the stadium were first class and gracious in defeat.

Words fail me but here goes, to have witnessed such a momentous cup final win with my 2 sons is something to treasure for life. The scenes when the open top bus parade went through the town were quite incredible. The game itself was won with 3 beautiful strikes that will live long in the memory banks.
Connor Newton scores his first goal for the club and it wins us the cup for the first time in our proud history, magnificent effort from Connor and a magnificent day to remember from all the players and staff, you done us proud and we the fans are proud to be buddies.

Brilliant to stand with my son, daughter and 2 nephews. Daily they need to listen to friends who follow the bigot brothers decry them about following St Mirren, a so called diddy team.
Stand proud in school this week, hold your heads high, your time has come ............St Mirren are back.
    We BELIEVED.

Fantastic day today and what a difference from the last final at Hampden - not just the win versus disappointment, but in the atmosphere - there were not 40 police lined up segregating the fans in the car park on the way in, Saints & Hearts fans walked freely amongst each other on the way in and out, and there were even a few we passed after the game who stopped to say congratulations. What a difference when there are no ugly sisters involved.

There was none. Most of this was rolled out in the late eighties and early nineties and it was as a result of central planning being foisted on local councils. There isn't a significant town anywhere in the entire UK that it didn't hit.
At that time, the thought proess was that our of town purpose built shopping centres would be beneficial for traders and convenient for car owners (not much doubt about that) and that town centres could then become nicer places to spend time without cars all over the place. We could introduce the continntal cafe culture to the strees of Airdrie and Paisley etc. This is the bit that didn't really work out.
Internet shopping has effectively culled many a small business now so there is now a definite lack of demand for retail space, we see that in empty shop units all across the countries High Streets, many of them in former prime retail spots. Things are changing, shopping habits are changing. We will probably see a lot of the former shopping areas turned over to housing developments over the next decade or so, we need to encourage people to go and live in these areas or they will simply rot away.

None. If I really went out of my way to insult you then you'd know about it.
There is the crux of the debate. You say you don't mind freedom of worship. As long as it's not at an empty football ground on a Sunday morning.
I'm pleased to see that St.Johnstone FC don't have a similar hang up about things like this and incredibly have never become "associated" with the Jehovahs Witness organisation that for many years hired out McDiarmid Park annually for a large open air meeting. They seem to have managed to avoid the dreadful stigma of being somehow tarnished with religion. I'm sure we will manage it too.

I see billboards at the ground for political parties or MPs. Does this mean that the club becomes affiliated with a particular political party? I somehow doubt it very much. It's a case of taking wedge of them in return for them having an advert at the ground. I can't say any of the advertising boasrds have made me want to vote for any of them. I'm aware that they exist of course, but that's as far as it goes.
Take their money, let them do what they do and that's it as far as I'm concerned. Atheists will bleat about it because they have their own agenda so why not let them take out adverts like they have done in the past saying "there is no god". We will take their money too thank you very much.

In what way would this be "dangerous"?
These people would still be going of their own free will. Are you wanting to deny freedom of choice now?
I won't be going and neither will you. They won't be bothering either of us, so what exactly is the problem here other than your own personal opinion? They will be meeting in an empty building at a time when neither of us will be there or will have anything to do with them. They won't be passing the communion cup around at half time so whats the problem?
You are a typical intolerant atheist. Let them be.

If the club is going down the community club route then we might as well get used to various groups of folk using the place. I don't have a problem with that and neither should anyone else.
If JimDick wants to set up his own wee group of like minded individuals to gripe about stuff and he wants to use the space in the stand to do it ,then fine. The more the place gets used by folk from the town, the better.

I'd rather have the stand filled by churchgoers on a Sunday morning than a bunch of boring, bitter atheist dullards like you.
Our club is named after a Christian saint. You must have a small brain haemorrhage every time you mention his name.
Maybe you should go to the church under the stand when it starts up. It might make you a decent person.

Against Celtic last week ,I thought he was a big raw laddie ,that will try hard ,cause defences a few problems who got a break in getting his first goal ,and would do us a wee turn .
Against Inverness ,I appreciated how physical he was as a player he is , and thought we have found a hard working runner ,a bit like Gregory Tade , who we might manage to keep at the end of the season.
After the St Johnstone game ,I doubt very much if we will be able to keep him ,the man has power, pace , has been well coached ,has a good football brain and most importantly has goals in him.
He has a fantasic future in the game ,and there wil lbe no shortage of scouts watching him

I think it was mostly local at the time the family had it but after they sold up it expanded a lot more and grew a lot more. It was gone long before I was around anyway.
My gran lived in Glenpatrick Road Elderslie in one of those big villas, then they shifted to Largs.
On another note, my grandfather had an engineering works in Linwood for years and he invented the first hydraulic lifting system for tipper trucks. He was asked by WH Malcolm to think of a way to make it faster to unload coal from their waggons and came up with that idea, fitted it to their entire fleet and then never patented it. He was also best mates with Harry Ferguson of Belfast who was also a bit of a car dealer and engineer and my grandfather had made a bit of equipment for tractors so that if they hit a boulder when the plough was down instead of tipping the tractor over and killing or injuring the driver, which was happening a lot, he made a hydraulic thingy that made the plough decouple. He provided the Swedish government with enough of these gizmos to attach to every tractor in their country...and didn't patent it. Harry Ferguson did... the rest is history (Massey Ferguson tractors) I remember a piece on The One Show a few years back about major inventions of the 20th century and Harry Fergusons brilliant invention was named as a game changer....
edit to add... if anyone had family that worked for Malcolms on shovelling coal out the back of lorries then I apologise on behalf of my family for the unemployment that followed the tipper truck invention..

One of the very best cetre forwards our club has ever had. He is right up there with the best of them.

Wee John McGinn, yesterday, reminded me of a player we had at St Mirren in the 60's, Archie Gemmill. The same type of player, small, wiry, and with great skill. This is a memory of what Archie was like, and Wee John could be the same:-

Just got home after that. Absolutely WONDERFUL stuff today from the entire team. Danny got his tactics right, there was zero fannying around at the back so we isolated their front three by bypassing them.
BTW that wee chap McGinn is utter class!
Loved that today, makes everything we go through worthwhile.
