  1. who is it that flops down flat on his back with relief?
  2. He was the best player on the pitch in the first half by a mile, but a decent 45 minutes and a good goal against a poor side is hardly a sound basis for a signing. We'll probably get him.
  3. slightly off topic but given mention of being cold at matches, what a bunch of milk cows. I was at a midweek IFK Goteborg v Besiktas match in the Champs league a few years ago when it was -20. Never again.
  4. Preposition missing. Silly Skywalker. I agree with what Poz said about thickness of B&W stripes. White (pref) or black shorts, white socks with 2 black hoops at the cuff (if socks have a cuff). Away kit, don't care, but should be predominantly single colour; all white with black trim for example. I'll almost certainly never buy one with a sponsor's name on it.
  5. Foul throws now routinely allowed. Players now allowed to use arms to hold off other players etc etc, I could go on.
  6. I am a 'SE-VEN!' and so pleased to see that I may deigned worthy to attend. Living n the wrong side of the country I play my 'golf' at Leven Links (with results often as horrible as Saints) and on a clear day in the right conditions you can hear the East Fife FC tannoy and the crowd when they score. Easier to get to by car, I'd probably recommend heading up the A92, turn for Leven, follow signs for golf course/promenade then turn right after Sainsburys up the hill to Methil and head for the sea. They'll be no bad.
  7. Re pronunciation - it's definitely not Pal, as in 'hey pal, you looking at ma pint?' and not really like Paul, but more like 'Pole'. Norwegian has more vowels than English and the noun 'å' - pronounced like 'oa' (as in oak, but with a longer finish) is distinct from the vowel 'a' which is generally pronounced 'ah' Phonetically second name is something like 'Fee-yeld-e' but two syllables.
  8. I think I understand what FS was getting at and was fair enough comment in my view. To be fair, Lennon's death was that of a musician whose fame far eclipsed that of Michael and I recall the coverage being very candid about Lennon's personality at the time in a way that doesn't tend to happen now. Perhaps what Faraway is referring to is how, since Diana's death there's been a trend towards an individual's impact being magnified disproportionately and uncritically (re-)appraised as a matter of course, i.e. 'as is the way of things.' I'd have to agree and we could I'm sure all rattle off lots of examples of this. Anyway, while his music wasn't my cup of tea, there's no doubt the bloke could really sing (but so what) as his stint with Queen showed. I only comment because I stayed, and had dinner, at The Miller of Mansfield pub in Goring earlier in the year (nice place). GM was dining at the adjacent table and I recall us saying privately, later that evening, that he looked overweight, unfit and generally unhealthy and might need to watch out... I'm almost exactly he same age as he was so for me it's yet another moderately sobering reminder of the fragility of existence. Time for drink.
  9. Above all other teams, I REALLY love it when beat QoTS. Thanks Saints, what better way to (hopefully) turn the corner.
  10. One thing that might help is if we close this forum, FB etc.
  11. If you think this is the worst Saints team ever, you haven't even been paying attention over the last 5 seasons. (Plus, of course, we haven't had 'ever' yet, and there will probably be worse to come at some point). Apart from a dismal first 30 minutes we were the better footballing side against Dunfermline by a fair margin, which we have no right to expect really, and on another day might have won. But of course we didn't, and goals are what count and we need to get the ball into the box, and in the back of the opposition's net much more. I admit I've not seen us play for a while because I've largely lost interest of late, my apathy kicked in during the Lennon era when you could already detect a whiff of inevitable decay despite the cup win. I've done maybe 45 years hard time at Love Street and the Stadium of Revolving Names, but right now I have enough unhappiness in my life. I recall I similarly disengaged in the Hendrie /Coughlin eras, the latter of which I remember as far worse in terms of the football on display. I've said it before, because age does have the compensation of offering genuine perspective, but I remember enjoying life when we were I think the last part-time team in the old first division. We had better players and bigger crowds too in those days and it didn't seem to hurt us. I liked Ross as an ok player for us and he seems a decent man. Of course I wish him well but we really need better players, not a merry-go-round of managers. That said, I find the judgement of anyone who wears a quilted jacket to be at least questionable. I'm surprised no one else has picked up on this crucial point; perhaps our problems are much deeper than I fear. Talisker-fuelled rant over.
  12. I saw JCC and Attila the Stockbroker in a pub in 1978 or so. Very funny. Good tip off on Skids, thanks for that , will give that a pop. Got Sabbath's last gig in Scotland to look forward to in January, first saw them 38 year ago as well, jeez, when bands were loud, not like these days when you can have a conversation at a gig... I live in Edinburgh and there's almost nothing happening music wise in this town these days apart from the RSNO, and they're really just a covers band.
  13. I voted Remain, and I get why it suits some people to present the result in those kind of terms, the numbers were there for all to see. But I find the idea that somehow 'Scotland' voted a bit disingenuous; it undoubtedly ignores the constitutional fact that the referendum was just that - a uk-wide referendum based on the aggregated result of individual votes across the country as a whole - no constituencies or regional votes involved. Strictly speaking where the votes came from is largely irrelevant unless people are suggesting that some votes carry more weight than others?
  14. I don't pay to advertise our sponsors, that's the wrong way round, surely. Is the new kit somewhere underneath the sponsor's logo?
  15. jose mourinho sorry, couldn't resist - it's the Man U 'way' innit?
  16. My Dad and Granddad saw him fight at Paisley Ice Rink. I wish I had. A very important sporting figure, not without flaws, but then who, of the greats, is?
  17. Ah the glory of an away trip to Craven Cottage...we were a decent side at times in the late 70s. Feels a very long time ago now.
  18. If you mean right now, then I'd say League 2 strugglers, in our better days I'd say League one
  19. That is an excellent factoid, if true. I salute you.
  20. Used to go to West Ham when I lived in London in the late 80s and 90s. It was a pretty horrible ground and no loss if you ask me, though I understand fans' attachment to grotty, worn-out grounds... My abiding memory was that getting behind the team there meant 90 minutes of vociferous swearing at the players. Sounds familiar? Agree with the guy who said Leeds was bad for violence. Their fans used to fight each other. Mental.
  21. The man for whom the word 'avuncular' was surely coined. Class. He presented the moon landings, contributing to a cherished childhood memory of being 6 and amazed.
  22. Let's get this thread back on message, or closed. We must finish above Morton.
  23. Is that true? Aren't prices much lower in Germany for example, and attendances much higher? Certainly price main factor for me. Then winter weather, then team performance. On price, I was speaking to a Charlton supporting mate who pays less for his ST than we do. Who would argue that he isn't getting much more vfm than us.
