Character building pitches. Player's then more than likely had better control skills as ball would be bobbling all over the place. Nowadays even the 'all weather' pitches can cause matches to be postponed due to ice, etc.

Easier to control the ball as it got stuck in the mud and didn't bounce away.

And less running about to do🤣

 

Did see clips of recent Portsmouth v Sunderland match where players could have been paddling by end of match, no bouncing, ball getting stuck and water flying everywhere.
