Worth a mention, while we are on the topic of Fraser Spiers

I was shocked to see that the true legend that was Eric Cuthbertson had passed away when the roll of fallen buddies was run on Saturday at the game.

I checked online and it turned out to be the same guy

I knew Eric since 1975 and often helped him and his then roadie, Mick, haul his unfeasibly heavy amp combo up to the lounge at the silver thread when the lift didn't work.  We also set up his gear for the recording of Danny Kyle's album at the town hall where he completely stole the show as performer and compere.  Graham Lyle told me a few years ago that Billy Connolly was absolutely raging about that, but he never credited Eric for the  joke that brought him to fame on Parkinson's show so I doubt Eric cared.

I enjoyed his company many times and his singing & playing were sublime.  He managed to reduce me to tears one night in his house in Hunterhill, when he told us the story of his childhood & treatment for polio.  I never heard him complain once and  his condition was carte-blanche for some of the most outrageous jokes and comments i ever heard.  His wife Liz had a lot to put up with as she cared for him and raised their son while Eric was full-time at work and near enough a full-time musician for most of his life

RIP Eric

Lovely tribute BoK.

Sad loss for music

Hang on to those special memories.

Silver Thread! Deserves a thread of its own. Some stories to be told there, I reckon.

On Friday night I went to see Bob Cheevers on his farewell tour.

The venue shared this feedback from Bob the following day...

"Last nites packed gig was the most fun, satisfying, responsive, personal and rewarding I’ve played in my whole career. Thank you wonderful folks in and around the Coatbridge area and The Georgian Hotel, 50rpm & John Goldie for such a memorable gift. W/love"

Wow!

"in my whole career"!

Let's put that in context...

This is from a Grammy nominated, EMMY award winning octogenarian who has performed all over the world for decades and was chosen to open for Johnny Cash on the Man in Blacks last ever tour! 😯😯😯

That is the highest praise possible from a gig that I was privileged to be at. 😎

ps ... Age is mind over matter...

If you don't mind, it doesn't matter!

It is certainly no barrier to sheer talent shining.

In the last three months, three of my favourite gigs have been by artists with a combined age of 223. 😯😯😯

Bob Cheevers at 80 is the elder statesman of the three. 😎

Brilliant gig in Crail Community Hall tonight by Liz Jones and Broken Windows..

Liz has an amazing voice that could raise the dead, and her 5 piece band is so good.

If you like bluesy soulful rock underpinned by fabulous guitar and keys, catch these guys when they play Drygate Brewery on Saturday 8th June.

Check out their page on Facebook... There is a link for a free copy of a recent cd called Bounty.

Friday night was a sold out gig at St Luke's by Blue Rose Code. Absolutely brilliant.

Played the new album from start to finish then some old favourites.

Saturday night was Elderslie band King of Birds in Coatbridge.

The boys were in tremendous form, as evidenced by not one, but two well deserved standing ovations.

The Magpies in Kilbarchan Performing Arts Centre last night.

A friend was raving about this Yorkshire folk trio, and I now know why.

Beautifully crafted songs, gorgeous harmonies, and wonderful playing on the fiddle, banjo and guitar.

The band went down a storm at Celtic Connections and are touring to promote their latest album.

You can catch them this Wednesday June 12th in the Glad Cafe, Glasgow.

A few gigs lined up now, Arab Strap this weekend at Barrowlands, Nick cave at the Hydro in November, Twilight Sad at St Luke’s in December, Mogwai at Usher Hall in February, Flaming lips at the same venue in May and Pixies in Newcastle late May.
Credit card has taken a battering.

I was at Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve a couple of weeks ago, not great but he did reference a few times how he was barred from Glasgow in his early days and had to play at the silver thread in paisley.

I like St Luke's. Great venue.

Hamish Hawk would have been a bit special. Glad you enjoyed it. I was gutted that I couldn't make it.

I had only heard a couple of songs before going but that didn’t matter Loved the way he acted every song out,it was musical theatre from a very talented guy

First thing we did afterwards was check out tickets for Usher Hall in feb but unfortunately sold out apart from a few single seats here and there There’s another feb gig in Aberdeen but it’s a sun so no good We will catch up again tho 👍🏼

St Lukes is a great venue, just the size I like. I wasn’t sure about Hamish Hawk but I think I will try and get to see him sometime.

I get the feeling that EC is less committed to live performance these days.  Very few people that i know who have seen him in the last 10-ish years were remotely impressed.
