Euro 2028

If the UK bid is successful, how will Hampden look in 5 years without an upgrade?  It looked pretty dismal compared to the other stadia at the last Euros.  Ian Maxwell promises "improvements" without specifying anything but it will take a lot to get the old shitheap knocked into shape.  a new, basic, stadium with 50k capacity would likely cost  more than 80 million but maybe a decent outcome could be achieved if we could rustle up £200,000,000 or so with another £50,000,000 on improving transport and the environs.  Much as I'd love to see the tournament here, it would be hard to swallow another cheap and nasty fix being purported as a world-class stadium

Not so sure it did look "dismal".

Also, a "shiteheap"?

It's a traditional stadium, not so easy to upgrade to a modern stadium that has been purpose built.

Having been there quite a few times over the last 20-30 years I don't find it anywhere near the impression you have.

I'd imagine the Scottish football authorities, along with the Scottish government, would be hard pushed to find the numbers you seem to have come up with, especially when you look at massive building contracts which mostly seem to turn ion to costly debacles.

As @HSS mentioned, probably the major issue, being quite far away  from the pitch.

That piece was 18 months ago, nothing has changed since then, as far as I'm aware?

Correct. The SFA are skint. The only redevelopment will be on the back of a successful bid. Even then there would be doubts they will do anything major. I thought a good time would have been immediately after the commonwealth games.

I much preferred Hampden before it was all seated. Having said that, I'm too old to stand at a game now. emoji16.png

Getting into games when the crowds were three times the current capacity was arguably easier back then. 😂

Or was it because the pubs shut early to ensure that punters went to the stadium with time to spare?

Sure. That would work with 3pm kick offs.

“149,547 Scotland-England, 1937

This is still a European record for an international match.

The 1937 Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen drew an official crowd of 147,365, a world record for a club match at the time with 20,000 more people locked outside.

Hampden set world attendance records that year which have only been surpassed by the Maracanã, but it still holds all the major European records.”

But there were games like this that were midweek evening kickoffs:

“The attendance of 136,505 for the 1969–70 European Cup semi-final second leg between Celtic and Leeds United played at Hampden Park is the highest ever for a UEFA competition match.“

I do find it incredible to imagine 150,000 were once in that ground. I experienced one of the last

Knock the two ends down and square them off and it’s sorted

I'd agree, mostly

The North stand is still made of banked earth and concrete slabs and the entrance/exit for the lower sections needs improving.  It could also do with elevators to make the upper level more accessible

The south stand has all the basic requirements, other than it is tired and worn in places and the spectator facilities are very old fashioned

Scotland v czeckoslovakia in september 73 had an official attendance of 95,000, despite all 100,000 tickets being sold.  Inside the ground, it was clear that the capacity had been greatly exceeded and there were well over 100,000 inside that night.

There were always more at the game than the official attendance The Hampden turnstile operaters must have been worth a fortune
