Cornell, Dilo & Dillon Sign - Confirmed

I'd be happy with 11 loan players if we were successful next season. Football has evolved and loan signings are just as effective as contracted players now. Whats the difference between signing a player on a 1 year contract and signing them on a 1 year loan. If anything we end up with better player and therefore a better team.

"I'm not a fan of this rhetoric" - This is hardly relevant

"Are we here to develop players for Swansea?" - As it happens...yes

Unfortunately...as much as you disagree...this is exactly where we are...if Cornell is going to sit on any bench next year...why not a Welsh one?...what possible benefit could there be to him coming here and warming a bench in Paisley?...We don't own this player...as we can't afford to own him...his parent club will probably be looking for something out of this whole transaction...namely...player development.

Excellent post. At last somebody sees the bigger picture here.

Cornell will be our first choice keeper next season, and will have people on here eating their words.

Totally agree with that - I reckon he'll be an instant hit. I just hope the guy isn't reading any of the crap on here, or he'll be wondering what he has let himself in for. If there is any clause in the deal regarding first team games, it will be that Swansea can take him back if we can't give him the development opportunities this deal should provide for him and his club.

I still think Danny will be looking for an experienced fallback. If the Swansea goalkeeper isn't doing the biz. he will be dropped. If that means him returning to his parent club then, so be it. I'm certain Danny and, more importantly, his goalkeeping coach has extesively research this lad and KNOWS his level of ability. It's not ideal to have a loanee as the first choice, last line of defence though as, if I remember correctly, it is the one player can be recalled in emergency situations. This would leave us in "dead stook".

How can he know his level of ability? Cornell has never played at SPL standard before. Maybe he's good enough, maybe he isn't. No one knows. The last point about Swansea recalling him is also valid, if a couple of their keepers get injured David will be recalled, and that leaves us with no goalkeepers apart from Dilo, who's 19.

That's another reason why we simply must sign another keeper.

Have you seen Cornell or Dilo play that you can say they won't be SPL standard ? Maybe they will be or maybe they won't but at least give them some game time to show what they can do, there's friendlies coming up that will give us an indication of how good they are and if they don't inspire much confidence the transfer window is still open for a while yet.I would at least expect the coaching staff have seen both these players in games at some level.

No ones seen them play at SPL standard, cos neither of them have. I'm not saying they aren't good enough, i'm saying no one knows if they are good enough. Friendlies are no place to judge them either.

This is a moot point. I'm sure Danny knows we needs another keeper and i'm sure he's working on bringing one in as we speak.

I don't see that we do need another keeper, we have 2 who may or may not be good enough, give them some game time before judging. If they aren't good enough send Cornell back to his parent club and use the emergency signing rule to get another keeper outside the transfer window.

Hopefully Danny doesn't share your view, and i'm sure he doesn't.

We have never went into an SPL season with a youth keeper as back up, i can't see why we'd be doing it next year, particularly when the first choice is also unproven and is liable to be recalled by Swansea at any time.

Last year we had an experienced keeper as our 3rd choice for goodness sake, why would Danny suddenly decide it's okay to have a kid as second choice? He wouldn't, makes no sense.

The reason we had an experienced keeper as 3rd choice last season was because Adam got injured and it turned out to be long term. As the saying goes if they're good enough they're old enough.

Can't understand why anyone would think he's 'liable to be recalled by Swansea at any time'???

Possible, yes. However very unlikely. That's just worrying for no real reason. Anything can happen!!! What if Steven Thompson decides to emigrate!? What if Paul McGowan gets murdered by a jealous Dougie Imrie!? Chill, everyone. These keepers will be just fine.

I'm not too sure about Dilo tbh. From the montage on YouTube he looks like an outfield player playing in goals; very comfortable kicking the ball - that could be a blessing in disguise as one bad pass to a fullback could result in real danger. He also looks like how an outfield player would dive aswell - a bit like sly Stallone in escape to victory, there's just something a bit weird looking about it.

What if Lee Mair decides to move on?

Relax

Regarding a keeper Lex , There was an artical in the local PDE saying DannyLlennon had given the job of finding a new goalie to our goal keeper coach no one has been plucked out of freash air. I'm confident we are in sound hands.

What a load of nonsense, this is one of the most ill informed posts i've ever read on here, and that's saying something.

Time for a reality check, i'll get back to basics for you. There is two main reasons for a contracted player to be unavailable for selection: suspension and injury. When you loan a player there is a third reason for him to be unavailable to you, if he gets recalled by his parent club. This happens all the time sadly, certainly far more regularly than players emigrating and being murdered... :1eye

For obvious reasons its far more likely that an on loan keeper is going to be recalled than an outfield player due to the specialist nature of their position. Basically, if Vorn or Tremmel pick up a long term injury next season i'd expect Cornell to be on the next flight back to Swansea.

If we go with just these two keepers (which i don't believe we will, but let's hypothesise) we are running the normal risk of losing them to injury/suspension along with the risk that Cornell could be recalled at any time.

I'm not saying these aren't two good keepers, i trust Mathers judgement. My point is we need another one. Danny - or St Mirren for that matter - have never went with two untested keepers in an SPL season before, i'm sure we won't this time.

I don't know if you understand the concept of irony, my good Buddie.

Yes, it's possible a loan player could be recalled. Always a risk. But, when someone is a third choice keeper at a Premiership club, I'd say it's a calculated risk. If the worst happens I'm sure we'd be able to fix the problem. Of course, there's always the young Frenchman. I'm sure we haven't just signed him cos he's the same nationality as Ludo Roy.

Sorry if I don't have enough posts to be considered intelligent enough to have made my earlier comments. Cos, secretly, I kinda guess that might be why my opinion is an issue. Possibly. Either that or, as I sometimes find, some people don't think my points are as valid because I'm a 'far-flung' Buddie who's chosen to live in (gasp!) England.

For what it's worth brother, I love you because you're a St.Mirren fan, like me. I may disagree with you on this, but I won't slag you off. Have a lovely, sunny weekend. Or is that just in Leicester...?

Don't know what all the fuss is about the keepers. When we signed Ludovic Roy, he was only 20 with no senior experience and made over 120 appearances.

He's also without club.At 35 would anyone consider him.

This. I think that there has been a largely unjustified sense of panic surrounding the GK situation, say for example Samson had stayed and the only change in the GK department was the loss of Adam, I doubt the response would have been one of such alarm.

To say this is because Samson is a top GK owing to his experience etc would be quite misleading in my opinion, I simply don't think Samson was all that great (McHattie's free-kick at Tynecastle for example).

In my opinion a sense of panic cannot be justified by pointing purely to lack of SPL experience. All things considered I'm quite content with the GK situation as it stands. I would hope that we all cut Cornell and Dilo some slack and not simply jump on the panic bandwagon as soon as they make a mistake (like Samson has done plenty times before).

What a load of word salad.

I have no issue with us using the loan market, i think Cornell will be a good signing for us FWIW. The point is we need another keeper, and i'm sure Danny realises this as much as anyone. Swansea only have 2 senior keepers, if either of them gets injured or even suspended, i'd wager Cornell is on the next flight down to Wales.

Not to mention the natural risk of either Dilo or Cornell getting injured/suspended up here. We cannot be in a position where we only have one untested keeper available for selection.

The good news is Danny will know this, and i'm sure he's working on a deal to bring another keeper to the club as we speak.

We were a first division club then, completely different ball game.

For your last point, yes i would like to see someone like him brought in.
