Guest TPAFKATS
Meant to say thanks to Obama for getting more votes for the "yes" campaign as a result his sycophantic interfering during the "love in" with his lap dog Cameron today. Not sure what the point of his speech was?Veiled threat or favour to Cameron? Both? Certainly isn't likely to encourage anyone to vote yes. Poor diplomacy at the very least. Still at least Cameron managed to get someone to help out. It was all a bit embarrassing for him when he asked Putin and got a knockback. Edited June 5, 2014 by TPAFKATS

Seems Cameron is only too willing to prostitute himself to anyone who is willing if it suits his agenda.

oaksoft
I've no idea why anyone would think Obama's comments were relevant in any way shape or form. It's yet another person who simply doesn't understand that the way to get Scots to do something is to tell them not to or to threaten them. Drew
I've no idea why anyone would think Obama's comments were relevant in any way shape or form. It's yet another person who simply doesn't understand that the way to get Scots to do something is to tell them not to or to threaten them. He represents a nation that consists of a sizeable population, the vast majority of which probably couldn't pinpoint Scotland on a map, much less give two hoots about our constitution. In any event, Obama is a busted flush, so what little credibility he might have had once upon a time, has ebbed away. Stuart Dickson
He said his piece, it wasn't nearly as clear cut as some, including the media & Dougie Alexander, would have us believe. ...and we move on. Ho,hum. That's the attitude, you win some, you lose some. Shit happens. It was pretty clear cut though. He was referring to the international strength and power of what he described as America's greatest ally and he was clear in his two opinions. The first was that splitting the union would damage the strength of this ally, and two that the UK should stay in Europe to retain a strong and powerful voice in Europe. Alex Salmonds response was pitiful telling Obama he's got two friends. What a laughable little toad of a wanker

RickMcD
So why are we replacing them? BTW, they aren't actually "ours". We lease them from USA The truth seems to be that so much of what happens with updating and replacing nuclear weapons is kept under wraps, I believe at the USA's instructions. The replacing at the moment I imagine is because of the new generation Trident system. I read an article a few years back which said that nuclear weapons were examined frequently and a small percentage got replaced from time to time because, apparently, they had lost some efficiency. You can read into that what you like. The capital costs for Trident run into billions but the annual costs are estimated at around £300m. Even including the capital costs, apparently the total cost of Trident is well under 10% of the Defence budget. For good or bad, depending on your politics, the MOD is a huge employer. Stuart Dickson
I've been watching some of those moving tributes today about the D-Day events which changed the course of World War II and the astonishing bravery of those who took part. One thing crossed my mind though - how much different would the war have ended had Scotland been Independent in 1939 and behaved in the same way as the Irish Republic throughout the course of that war? Would Neville Chamberlains declaration of war been sneared at by an Alex Salmond type leader? Would the leader of an Independent Scotland have refused to back the Rest of the UK? Would we have refused to supply the UK military with ships built on the Clyde and munitions produced in factories like the one in Bishopton or at Hillington at Rolls Royce? Would the leader of the Scottish Government have praised Aldolf Hitlers style of leadership in one of the popular magazines of the day? Would he have argued against having Scottish troops join the allies because the German Army is a bit strong and there might be losses - as Alex Salmond did in Bosnia? I've no intention of politicising the D-Day celebrations but it's clear that together as a Union we repelled one of the biggest and strongest powers the world has ever seen, and when it came to the crunch our biggest allies - the Americans - lent their weight to the fight and we won the war. There is loads of historical proof that we're better together and as someone with a big nose and strong opinions I thank f**k Scotland wasn't independent and being led by the kind of political classes that we have today in 1939.
